I was interested in this question from reading books such as Aion by Carl Jung; he says Christianity contains the seeds of further development but that it has become archaic to us as it is stuck in language and imagery of 2,000 years ago, in part because the church didn't encourage mystics such as Meister Eckhart in the Middle Ages who were potentially renewing the symbols but were classed as heretics. So I asked this question of I Ching.

Change in line 1 refers to going one own's way. Perhaps something here about simplicity and keeping out of worldly affairs.
Change in line 4 refers to obstacles being opportunities.
Change in line 5 refers to preparing for danger and being aware of it. I wonder what the danger may be.

Taoscopy says of 10.1.4.5 "Continuing to rise: One follows a well-defined plan to have the right to be considered part of the elite.

Hex 4 is "youthful folly". It is interesting that in mythology the fool is often the precursor to the saint. It is also characterised as "not knowing" - suggestive that in the resultant picture of progress the religion will have become something more mystical perhaps - that the old certainties will have been slackened and the adherence to the word of the Bible may be less - and a new state of "not knowing" will exist out of which creative progress can take place.

I am interested to hear anyone's take on this.

I think there's ever such a lot happening in Christianity in the UK anyway. New ideas, only last night the vicar of my church was talking about how a church without walls would be, Celtic Christianity, churches run by people outside the church, churches without priests, there's so much there and it can live again I believe.

Taoscopy's work is very much his own take on it and departs a great deal to the I Ching we know and use here.

10.1.4.5>4 I don't have time to consider it fully now but it looks like a tentative and almost daring step into the unknown

I agree, I think it is already happening and it's exciting

Love the change patterns 17 yang pattern, following, has often come up for me around Christianity and yin pattern 18, restoring decay. I think so much of Christianity has been hidden or lost it's kind of like now is the time to find all that has been obscured and we are in a state of 4, Not Knowing and Not Knowing's Treading. We tread with solitary diligence many of us who cannot really be part of very rigid religious systems but that doesn't mean the faith is dead. 10, Treading the Tiger's Tail, what do you think is the tiger here ? Could it be Christ ?

Taking a look at the imagery of the hexagrams, trigrams and lines (and less at the Yi's words):

I am not Christian, but how we act towards one another and towards our planet in the name of god or religion is of interest to me.

I have heard the phrase from the bible, that we are made 'in God's image'; however, I think there is a basic problem now that people are instead making God 'in man's image' - e.g. that religion - and here in particular we're talking about Christianity - is now about people making their god or gods and and their religion what they want it to be, so that their 'god' now supports hatred, or nationalism or even greed.

For example, we have Putin's close ties to the Russian Orthodox Church which he is using - with the blessing of the church's leaders - to further his own political agenda and control.

Or, here in the US, Catholics and other Christians have rejected the Pope's encyclical, "Laudato si: on care of our common home' because they would rather support consumerism, irresponsible development, environmental degradation and global warming instead of hearing the Pope's call.

So perhaps the Church is in crisis because people are no longer finding inner jor or peace, nor getting direction for how to live their lives from it - or they are choosing to ignore this. (And to be sure, this is not limited to just one religion.)

So, how might the Church 'progress' which I assume might mean how it could become more meaningful and a force for good? And by the Church, I mean - its 'Body' - which includes the institutions and leadership, and the 'congregation'.

Regarding peoples' search for inner joy (Hex. 10, lower trigram Lake): perhaps the church needs to look more deeply (Hex. 4' lower trigram Water) - which can mean many things - but may here it's to look at the suffering of the world, at it's hatred and violence and intolerance - and to let this going deep heal us - instead of constantly walking around in a state of denial.

Perhaps too, the Church needs to stop (4's upper trigram Mountain) and contemplate how it can again become meaningful in people's lives and help people find direction (10's upper trigram Heaven). Maybe the Church need to look at what long-held practices and beliefs are helping people and which aren't (again, Mountain). I mean, should one's religious life revolve around wheather or not priests can marry, or whether or not people are gay, or that as religious people, we should care more about guns, or material things, or nationalism than how we "care for our common home"?

And perhaps one 'root cause' of all of this, is that religion has become too dogmatic and all about rules and politics, etc. - it is about rules and politics, and much less about contemplation, acceptance and caring.

All the best ...

I'm not really clear what the question is but fooling around with the hexagrams...
I see hex 4 as the individual soul aspiring to be one with hex 10, the tiger representing the kingdom, power and glory of God.
10.1 We needn't do anything other than be ourselves.
10.4 Ask and it shall be given unto you. "This is the way to enter into a true relationship with the tiger" - Hilary.
10.5 As we dare to decide what we want and ask. we strengthen our ability to be one with all that is without losing our individual identity.

My understanding is that the conception of the Trinity Joachim of Fiore (1135-1202) had was of three ages - the Father being the age of the Old Testament, the Son being the age of the New Testament, and the Holy Ghost being a further age he believed was about to start in which priests would not be necessary. I believe his ideas were considered heretical.

10.1 We needn't do anything other than be ourselves.
This makes sense as it is commonly said that by mystics not just of Christianity but I think of all religions that he who finds himself finds God.

Apologies if I was a touch ambiguous with my question. What I mean by the question is that how may Christianity prevent the atrophy that has been arguably been happening to it since probably the Middle Ages - how may its ideas develop so that it may be vital in the future and necessary for and helpful for peoples souls? Here are some quotes from Carl Jung's book "The Undiscovered Self" that relate to this question:

Are not Jesus and Paul prototypes of those who, trusting their inner experience, have gone their individual ways in defiance of the world? [pg. 32]

I am, on the contrary, convinced that it is not Christianity, but our conception and interpretation of it, that has become antiquated in the face of the present world situation. The Christian symbol is a living thing that contains in itself the seeds of further development. It can go on developing; it depends only on us, whether we can make up our minds to meditate again, and more thoroughly, on the Christian premises. [pg. 34]

So much is at stake and so much depends on the psychological constitution of modern man … is he conscious of the path he is treading, and what the conclusions are that must be drawn from the present world situation and his own psychic situation? Does he know that he is on the point of losing his life-preserving myth of the inner man which Christianity has stored up for him? Does he realise what lies in store should this catastrophe ever befall him? Is he even capable of realizing that this would be in fact a catastrophe? And finally, does the individual know that he is the makeweight that tips the scales? [pg. 60]

We are so captivated by and entangled in our subjective consciousness that we have simply forgotten the age-old fact that God speaks chiefly through dreams and visions. The Buddhist discards the world of unconscious fantasies as “distractions” and useless illusions; the Christian puts his Church and his Bible between himself and his unconscious; and the rationalist intellectual does not yet know that his consciousness is not his total psyche. [pg. 142]

For this question I'm seeing hexagram 10. The Tiger as representing the power of God/Universal Flow. I"m seeing 4. The Fool as the one who is unaware of the god who lives within.

How may Christianity be progressed? 10.1.4.5 to 4

Christanity may be progressed by walking through a field of Unknowing (4). Treading step by step, travelling along simple paths at your own pace (10.1). It is easy to go astray so remain wary of the pitfalls and curious of the wonder (10.4). Make a sincere commitment, especially in the face of adversity, to keep faith and see things through to the end (10.5). Understanding the difference between the high and the low; between giving and receiving, will keep alive your awareness thereby strengthening the will and compassion within yourself and spreading it throughout the hearts and minds of others (10)

...or maybe it's nothing like this at all.
Good Luck
