Hi everyone,
OK so I'm properly baffled by this one. My 7 yo son has been struggling with anxiety for several years, and it has only gotten worse lately, manifesting in all sorts of life-disrupting behaviors. He has a therapist who sees him once a week, but this is early days, and she hasn't really given us any advice yet about how we as his parents should be supporting him at home. This situation has led to all sorts of friction and challenges both between him and us, his parents, and between my wife and I as we struggle to figure out how to help him. My question, "What can I do do help my son with his mental health struggles?" yielded 30.1.6 (Clarity) changing to 62 (Preponderance of the Small/ Small Overstepping). The only thing that really resonates from this reading is the secondary hexagram, which advises that only small things can be accomplished. The rest is just confusing. I am tempting to ask Yi again, wording my question differently, though what I want to know is essentially what I asked: what is the best way to deal with my son's mental health issues?

Thoughts? Thanks!

I see 30.1.6 > 62 as saying he is confused (30.1) about what is important, what he should focus on (30.6), and that it would be helpful for him to know more precisely what he is supposed to do in his various situations (62). So perhaps you can make a point of coaching him. One day I overheard my son showing my grandson how to introduce himself and make new friends on the first day of school (“Stand still, look them in the eye and say “Hi, my name is Jax. What’s yours?”). You wouldn’t have thought it was something that needed to be taught but it obviously gave the little guy a significant boost of confidence. Also having “in” clothes is so important at this age. The right shoes can cost but can be more effective than a therapist! In fact, there’s a website, Frumpfighters.com that puts out a calendar for adults and kids telling what one should wear each day. Again, kinda pricey but they learn to dress themselves and feel like they have some control over at least one portion of their lives. Being able to do well in school is of course a major stressor and as a retired tutor I can attest that if a kid can do math his confidence will light up the room. I used the Kumon math and reading workbooks. Kids are often pushed ahead even when their understanding is fuzzy which ultimately leads to a breakdown by the time they get to division and fractions. Start at the kindergarten level even if he’s in the second grade.
Also 30.1 leads to 56.Traveling. So one way to deal with his anxiety is for the two of you to take a nightly walk together - stroll around the block and share what you did all day.
Finally, are you familiar with Bach Flower Essences? These are homeopathic remedies. Nothing chemical in them. Go to Bachfloweressences.com and look up what it recommends for anxiety.

Good luck!

Hello adamlll

"What can I do do help my son with his mental health struggles?" yielded 30.1.6 (Clarity) changing to 62 (Preponderance of the Small/ Small Overstepping).

"What are the "little things" that could nourish a greater understanding?"

30.1- Look for signs in the small things of everyday life that contribute to creating a stable daily routine for your child... routines create stability and reduce anxiety, as well as the small details that disrupt that routine accumulate anxiety.
30.6- Have the clarity to act in a continued implementation of this routine and avoid becoming distracted by the accessory.
