Hexagram 36, Brightness Hidden

Key Questions

When no one is looking, who are you?
How do you safeguard that light?

Oracle

'Brightness hidden.
Constancy in hardship bears fruit.'

In the last days of the Shang dynasty as it fell into corruption, Prince Ji was one of the very few virtuous men remaining at court. Remonstrating with the ruler would invite brutal retributions; to flee would be a shameful desertion.

The story goes that once, the king and his entourage were so drunk they literally didn't know what day it was. Messengers were sent to ask Ji. Rather than reveal himself as the only one who knew, he feigned drunkenness and madness. In this way he was able to survive through the last days of Shang without compromising his principles by cooperating with the regime.

'Brightness Hidden' also means 'Brightness Wounded'. Since others do not share your standards or insight, it would be dangerous to let the light of your character shine out freely. Perhaps you have been injured; perhaps you fear injury. Yet you cannot, or will not, leave the situation in search of a stronger position. Instead, you stay true to the light and keep it burning in these hard times by hiding it away.

Image

'Brightness enters the earth's centre: Brightness Hidden.
A noble one, overseeing the crowds, uses darkness and light.'

Sequence

Brightness Hidden follows from Hexagram 35, Advancing.
'Advancing necessarily has occasion for injury, and so Brightness Hidden follows; Brightness Hidden means injury.'

Changing Lines

Line 1
'Brightness hidden, flying away,
His wings hanging down.
The noble one is on the move,
For three days, eats nothing,
Has a direction to go.
Those in authority have something to say.'

Hexagram 15, Integrity

Key Questions

What is the simple reality?
How might you return to a state of balance?
What if it didn't all depend on you?

Oracle

'Integrity creates success.
A noble one completes it.'

To experience Integrity is like coming face to face with your real self – plain, simple and unadorned. To have Integrity is to be whole, at one with yourself and with reality. It means being honest about your own capacities, holding yourself in creative balance with your world and not exaggerating the importance of your role.

These qualities enable the noble one to bring whatever work presents itself to completion. Since she is not overly full of herself, she has space for the real world; she isn't hampered by an excess or by a lack of confidence. Since she isn't caught up in a personal story, and doesn't identify her work with her worth, she is free to do what needs to be done and move on.

Image

'In the centre of the earth there is a mountain: Integrity.
A noble one reduces what is too much and increases what is diminished.
Weighing things up to even out their distribution.'

Sequence

Integrity follows from Hexagram 14, Great Possession:
'Great possession means being incapable of arrogance, and so Integrity follows.'

Pair

Integrity forms a pair with Hexagram 16, Enthusiasm:
'Integrity takes itself lightly; Enthusiasm is careless.'

Hi Kia Shine:

Your inquiry makes me wonder, are you asking if a particular person (we can call them Bob) loves you and when are they going to marry you? Or is your question: when will I meet the man/woman/other of my dreams and get married to them?

In either case, my quick read on your inquiry is that it speaks to balance -- that getting married (or obtaining any other outward thing) may make us happy, but we also have to balance that with our inward happiness, with that which we can rely on regardless of what happens - getting married, divorced, sick, rich, etc.

But then again, what do I know? Regards, David.
