Having had a rather lengthy conversation with the Yi before casting, listing out loud my many questions about the direction of life and feeling that there is nothing I actually control at this point, I cast for the question "what will happen next?" And Yi said:
Hexagram 49.1.4 becoming Hexagram 39.

Which to me says there is about to be a change for the better, describes my state of mind and the feeling of having no answers, seeing no answers, plus the need to evaluate those attitudes and find a more creative way. And certainly Hex 39 makes a great deal of sense, that feeling of limping, moving forward but constantly hobbled.

In the changing line 4 [thanks Soooooo] who are we talking about? Is that supposed to be me, somebody who effects the situation -- the world around me? Who is the tiger? Is this predictive or instructions? Should I go jump out there in my tiger pose? Or is there a tiger who instills belief, some miraculous or at least hopeful influence?

I think you mean line 4, not 5? Which changes to 39.

First let me say, how frustrating this must be!

Line 1 isn't yet ready to molt, yet it's very uncomfortable because change appears mandatory before you can move on to the next stage of development.

By the time line 4 is reached, it seems apparent that something has to give or change, and that some sort of adjustment or radical change must be made before things can progress. This change must correspond to with what is true and real, which usually means working with your real assets, though adapting to what the time and circumstance allows. A deer can't molt into snake, each is what it is. But a deer can adapt to a different environment, but it will have to lose some of its old customs and appetites to survive, possibly even change herds, or become a loner, or if a loner, join a herd. Same species, different circumstances.

I realize these generalities may not provide the comfort you'd wish for, but molting is never a comfortable ordeal, and relief only lasts until the next molting season.

You're probably tired of hearing that this is a time for inward development, but that may be your only immediate recourse. When a stream is obstructed, its waters deepen, and that deep pool may attract new life, and expand to create a new environment. That's why beavers build dams.

hi arabela

I recently had a very powerful 49 reading concerning a dream of mine. The reading was 49.3 and sure enough on the 3rd dream (and after a 17.5 dream in-between) the big cat showed itself . . Having said that, I'd be inclined to say that the 'tiger' could be any of the things you describe, or even something that you cannot put your mind on yet.
Line 1 shows you that what is coming is still on its inception part, it's brewing and forming beneath the surface while in line 4 the time of change is coming up clear, just like new buds announcing spring . .

I find there are a couple of ways to read 49 and 39 together; one would be that Yi reminds you to not try to visualize how things will be after they have been revealed, or beyond your circumstances, but to turn your attention to your limping now-ness: the signs to move thru it are right there even if not yet too clear. There's always the chance that your troubles will be overthrown in due time but if I were you, I'd keep in mind the chance of finding oneself impaired from the change of skins if I lose sight of the roadsigns in 39. What I have found with 39 is that the solution to it is often found in front of my feet -not in a big vision or a grand plan, but in the immediate reality that I find myself in . . very much a 'one step at a time' hexagram . .

hope that helps some!

Yes, the underlined especially rings huge bells. I'm having to adapt -- and I'm willing to adapt -- but so far I can't see with any precision what adaptations I should expect to make. However, I do imagine that my loner status has got to go. There is not much more to achieve unless I catch up with the herd somewhere. But where and to what purpose?

And tigers don't really travel in herds either. This strikes me as a very singular being, an exotic and impressive presence. And as I am in such a quandry I don't imagine me as the tiger, but that this must be someone else. Maybe the deepening pool attracts this tiger to its edge. I've felt like something is building for three years now, but somehow it always eludes me and/or there is another stage, another condition or codicile before this new truth emerges. Yes, it is really frustrating, I could say that i "itch all over" trying to divest myself of the old. And the expectation of this tiger is nearly overwhelming at this point. The comfort I suppose is that I asked what happens NEXT and that should imply a bit of immediacy anyway.
