Hello everyone,
I'm embroiled in a lawsuit with a store landlord since a few years and I asked the Yi to tell me about "how I should proceed with it and what the outcome would be". The lawsuit involves the landlord suing for some back rent (which he is correctly owed) and me suing with counterclaims on forced closings (while charging rent), changing the lock and seizing my goods (therefore not allowing me entry and access to my goods), frequent harassment and frequent ceiling water damage from floors above which required regular closures and repairs. My counterclaim is far higher than the amounts he is suing for.

My interpretation (I'm strictly a beginner) of 61.4.5.6 to 54, is mostly positive with a winning outcome while warning about possible pitfalls and dangers if I am not focused, dedicated and determined in pursuing the lawsuit. I haven't been able to give the lawsuit the effort and time required simply because of other fires I have been trying to put out. But it's at a critical juncture now.

I'd very much appreciate any insight of any sort that anybody could give me. Spent some hours reading up on possible interpretations; am not sure if I've understood it well, and I'd love to receive advice from regulars on this forum.

Thank you in advance,

Ra 1969, it seems you have really asked two questions here:

* how I should proceed?
* and what the outcome would be?

My sense of the Yi is that it is not a fortune-telling machine (others may disagree), but instead that it tells us about our current situation, which can inform us about how to act - which in turn can help us to shape or face the future.

So, you might consider this way of looking at the YI, and maybe that in this case the Yi is responding to something like: 'I'd like a good outcome to the situation I'm in with this other person' - and see if the response you got - 61.4.5.6 to 54 - is useful at all to you.

For me it seems to point to this idea of 'the truth within' which might mean being honest with yourself about what's going on - which for me, sometimes means a bit of self- or re-evaluation, or even eating some 'humble pie'.

And it makes me think, what actions can you take that will bring this situation to a resolution as soon as possible - and also, to not think in terms of positve/negative, or winning/losing, but instead what can you do that will bring about the most postive outcome for both parties.

But that's just my take on it. D.

61.4 The horse runs away - you leaving without paying rent?
61.5 Truth and confidence in a bond - the lease?
61.Constancy pitfall. - even if the judge decides in your favor you have difficulty collecting?

54. The Marrying Maiden describes a situation where a person doesn't have power and must follow the prescribed ritual.

This all reads to me as if the judge will follow the law and so this would seem positive for you if the law is in your favor.

As to what you might do to improve your chances, I know that when there are problems with the building the landlord is required to quickly have them repaired so you may want to be especially specific about how he dealt with the water damage. Also, if the judgement is in your favor you might want to clarify how and when the landlord will pay up. Just because you "win" it can still be difficult to collect.

"How I should proceed (with this lawsuit) and what (will) the outcome be?"
61.4.5.6 > 54

54 - Marrying Maiden as context. This is your situation.
This hexagram describes how to live in a polygamous household as a concubine or second wife in peace.
You can't always get what you want and you are a second fiddle the whims of another, in a disadvantaged position.
Requires a certain submissiveness.

61 is inner truth, sincerity and the middle way. This is encouraging that the outcome will be fair.
61.4 This says be careful and prepared. And be honest. Things will not go well if you keep secrets or conceal anything. Then you will have good fortune. Prepared here is probably in part whatever evidence you can get together, or witnesses to prove the facts you allege.
61.5 Here you have the ruler on the throne and him sincere, steadfast in the truth, and honest.
Binding everyone in sincerity. You have a good fair Judge it sounds like.
61.6 This is what not to do. No good will come of being self righteous or blowing your own horn. You are being ambitious in what you are asking. Don't push it, don't over share or expect more eloquent words to help you out here. Words don't help you here.

So - prepare yourself with facts. Be open and honest. Present them without ego, just the facts and let the judge do his job. He or she is a fair person interested in truth, not theater.
Don't think you can convince the judge of anything. Let the facts speak for themselves.
Then things will go well.

If the law is anywhere near the landlord tenant law where I am, landlords cannot lock you out or evict you, only a sheriff with an eviction notice can. You may be awarded more than your damages, in my state if I did that to a residential tenant they could get triple damages from me.
But that's residential law where I am, not commercial, and I don't know your local laws.
Anyway the Yi seems to think you should just leave all that up to the judge.
