Dear community,

I live in small village in the mountains. We have here a small music school with teachers for flute, piano and guitar, so I am wondering if learning music again. I studied piano and transverse flute for years when I was a kid but hated it as the way to learn in my native country was not playful and very austere.I rejected playing music from one day to the another in my teenage years, as I was feeling very frustrated. Playing ranges was then my musical horizon and nothing that was feeding my heart and my hears.

I am now in my forties, I love music and I feel some strong attraction to come back to learn playing music again.
I almost forgot everything I learnt in my young years.

As I am working, studying and having one kid, - I am busy - I wonder myself if it's realistic to come back to learn music.
I have been asking:

· With respect, what is the potential of learning music again ( at my village music school )? 2.3 > 15

2.3 > 15 Concealed qualities permit divination. The consequence may be king's affairs. Without accomplishment, he completes
Sounds positive, like a peaceful constancy in learning with humility would bring me fulfillment to play. It sounds I could persevere at this time when I was unable to persevere being younger...

· What potential if I learn / go to piano class? 52.5 > 53

52. 5 Stabilize one's jawbone. The words have order. Regrets disappear.
Being sincere I don't understand that one on this context..It looks like 53 hexagram perspective is that allowing some hard progress but 52. line 5 sounds like I should not talk? (Can't understand this...)

· What potential if I learn flute / go to flute class? 10.1.6 > 47

It sounds it's more easy going to learn flute again, perhaps more rewarding or easier but the related hexagram 47 is about being confined, so it makes me confused.

The 2 last questions have their importance, as it's not the same cost buying each instrument - flute or a piano for this new hobby? I love both - I can't make up my mind about which one...And I feel I need weekly class in order to stick and progress.

Thank you to the community for their advice and help.

The initial response looks positive. H2 suggests success in following that pull you are feeling. Your Self wants you to make music. I'm saying make because although your question is about learning, the key thing is making. In the US the biker say Live to Ride, Ride to Live. Maybe for you it's Learn to Make, Make to Learn. Line 3 puts a spin on it -- to me it seems to be saying "don't worry about making it too official or formal." You mention you have a child. I can't think of a better way to teach a child music than to model how enjoyable it is to just pick up a thing that can make sound and play some music, an instant source of unlimited free fun. I hope you can pursue your music and have a ton of fun doing it.

Thank you Chrisba for your insights about my reading.

I am curious...Where do you see my self want to "make" music?
If I play any lovely things that sounds well, I will be happy enough... Making music is almost something I don't even think about :)

And actually my daughter is learning flute at this same school. So yes it could be fun to play together.

But I still don't know if I should enroll in flute or piano... Any insights ?

Thank you

Hello Torshavn!

The 2nd hexagram, with the 3rd line changing to the 15th hexagram, can be interpreted in several ways based on the principles of the I Ching. Remember that interpretations can vary, and it's important to consider them in a broader context.

The 2nd hexagram, often called "The Receptive," signifies a receptive and open attitude. It suggests being adaptable, flexible, and willing to embrace new learning experiences. This hexagram encourages you to be open to the idea of returning to music and exploring it once again.

The changing 3rd line indicates the potential for obstacles or resistance in your path. It suggests that there may be some challenges or hesitations to overcome as you consider returning to learn music. This could be related to past frustrations or concerns about finding the right approach to learning that resonates with you.

The changing hexagram, the 15th hexagram, is called "Modesty" or "Humility." It suggests approaching the situation with a humble attitude, being receptive to guidance, and being willing to learn from others. This hexagram reminds you to be open-minded and willing to let go of any preconceived notions or negative experiences from your past.

Overall, the interpretation of this reading seems to suggest that while there might be some challenges or reservations in returning to learn music, embracing a receptive and open mindset, coupled with humility and adaptability, can lead to a positive and fulfilling musical experience. It encourages you to be patient, find the right environment and approach that suits your needs, and be willing to embark on a new learning journey with joy and enthusiasm.

Remember, the I Ching offers guidance and insights, but ultimately, the decisions and actions you take are up to you. Trust your own intuition and consider seeking additional guidance from trusted sources or professionals who can provide specific advice tailored to your unique situation and desires.

I wish that this was helpful and inspiring.

Thank you SuperNatural, for the insights. It sounds very encouraging to go ahead with music again.

Any insights about piano or flute?

For Piano, I don't understand at all in that context the hex 52.5 > 53

52. 5 Stabilize one's jawbone. The words have order. Regrets disappear.

Instead flute hexagram line looks more promising 10.1.6 > 47

10.1 Plain white shoes. To proceed is without fault. ( LiSe)
10.6 Observing the steps and verifying the auspicious omen. Their revolving: eminent auspiciousness.

Going back to flute seems to be more promising and rewarding than piano , but I feel confused by the related hexagram 47 " Confined" at it feel in conflict with the changing lines.

This question has its importance, as it's not the same for me to buy a piano or a flute. I am not sure at all which class I should enroll best.

I have a few thoughts:

Hexagram 10 symbolizes Treading (or Conduct), suggesting the importance of taking action and making choices in your life. Line 1 changing signals the beginning of a new phase or venture, indicating a fresh start in your musical journey. This suggests that your interest in revisiting music stems from a genuine desire for growth and a different approach than what you experienced in your younger years. It signifies an opportunity to approach music education in a more fulfilling and enjoyable way, aligning with your current mindset and preferences.

Line 6 changing implies progress and transformation. It indicates moving from the initiation of studying flute to a state of completion or achievement. This change signifies that your renewed interest in music is not just a passing whim but can lead to significant personal growth and satisfaction.

The shift to hexagram 47 (Oppression) suggests that there may still be lingering doubts or emotional baggage from your previous experiences with music education. It encourages you to face and overcome any past frustrations or negative feelings associated with learning music. It advises approaching your studies with a fresh perspective and allowing yourself to explore the creative and joyful aspects of playing the flute, free from the constraints that hindered your enjoyment in the past.

Overall, this reading indicates that returning to music school to study the flute can be a positive and transformative experience for you. It encourages you to embrace a new approach, leave behind any negative associations, and find joy in the process of playing music again. By doing so, you may discover a newfound passion and fulfillment in your musical journey.

I hope this helps

Thank you SuperNatural for the detailed insights.
Yes you are right, I still have doubts about being able to play again - as kid I thoughts "I am bad at playing music" - about my own commitment.

Kid, the way I was learning music was very classic and competitive. We were trained to be good enough to be able to enroll in Conservatory. There were no enjoyment about the music itself or connection to the emotional part of playing music. I was trained in a strict way and I hated it. I just wanted to play boogie woogie on a piano, but the teacher did not approve the kind of music I was attracted to.

In that perspective, Flute looks for the moment to be more rewarding than piano.
On a practical point of view, I travel quite a lot abroad for my work so it would be more easy to practice flute as I can bring it easily with me...A piano has to stay home.

Dear community,

· With respect, what is the potential of learning music again ( at my village music school )? 2.3 > 15

2.3 > 15 Concealed qualities permit divination. The consequence may be king's affairs. Without accomplishment, he completes
Sounds positive, like a peaceful constancy in learning with humility would bring me fulfillment to play. It sounds I could persevere at this time when I was unable to persevere being younger...
Absolutely! If, based on an inner urging and external opportunities (you noticed the music school in the village), you get back to what you used to love, you'll be following the laws of the physical world and of your own part in it as a growing being. That's the Oracle's take on your first question. Did you feel a surge of life and encouragement when you got that answer?

What potential if I learn / go to piano class? 52.5 > 53
(Can't understand this...)
What potential if I learn flute / go to flute class? 10.1.6 > 47

The 2 last questions have their importance, as it's not the same cost buying each instrument

The oracle's answers to your two follow-up question are:

"Make rectifying one-sidedness and error your central concern; reaching a stable center in yourself can correct the situation." (52.5, Ritsema/Karcher)

and then

"Look at where are you are now, just beginning a new journey to learn and play music(10.1) and look back (10.6) at how you were when you first began, studying music under martinets--if you continue on this path you'll get depressed and hate music again (47 relating hexagram)." (My loose interpretation of those lines as applied to your situation.)

We've got piano and boogie woogie on one side, your daughter and the flute on the other; one intrument's cheaper and more portable; and--well, what's the I Ching coming back at you with here?

It's not giving you pros and cons on the choice of instruments.

It's giving you advice on what would work "best" for you---and that, I would argue, is the attitude with which you first broached the topic. That's a winning attitude.

Your two follow-up questions, in the context the details you provide in your comments to the replies above, along with the shift in tone from the beauty of hexagram 2.3 and its potential made actual from your intital question, to the mire and muck of 47 as the relating hexagram to your last question, provide a hint that there are some parts of you that understandably still hanker for the seeming safety and guidance of more powerful others (such as the I Ching, the online Clarity community, or music teachers at the school in your village) to tell you what to do or how to go about it the right way.

52.5 hints at intellectualism or making assumptions. That your teacher back then hated the kind of music you wanted to play on the piano is not justification to choose the flute today. ("... in that perspective, Flute looks more rewarding.....") That the music classes of your childhood was run by a martinet who didn't actually love music is not a reason to avoid, or enroll, at the local music school today; you'd need to try it out in reality. That a flute is easier to practice on the road and a piano has to stay home are other questionable assumptions. You can buy a portable 76-key touch-sensitive (almost as good as a piano!) keyboard for about three hundred bucks and practice on headphones, but people might hear your $1,000+ transverse flute through your hotel room door when you travel and want to practice.

The oracle's throwing 10.1.6 at you, with its backdrop of drudgery and despair (47) implies that if you can learn the right lesson from your past (10.6), you can avoid 10.1 (starting again down the music-making road too rigidly, too dutifully, too "external locus of control" based), and thereby get to experience more Joy (58)*, perhaps in exchange with other musicians (the shape of 58 two trigrams is like a small boogie woogie combo). Same if you plumped for the flute, if you chose it based on your love of playing the kind of music that you want to play. The oracle is saying your initial attitude (with its casting result 2.3) is spot on: follow your impulse, and allow the joy and the work of making music back into your life, in whatever shape and practical form that happens to take. "Doing the Work" here as they say in self-development circles means Get Back to how you used to be, you and boogie woogie music.

_____

*Considering what the relating hexagram from a second follow-up question would have been if one of its changing lines weren't changing is a bit of a stretch, but it seems to click here, and I borrowed that idea from De Korne's commentary on 10.6 as representing a lesson learned, if it's the only line changing. Which implies that any other line changing represents a lesson not being learned! Which further implies that you're in a lucky position, because you're right at the beginning of a new beginning with music, and well-placed to go about it the right way--your way. Because you love music, and you know what you love.
