Dear all

Sometimes years are very slow but they bring about so much change!
2014 has been a rather uneventful year (only major thing is that I quit my job I hated so much and have been on sickness benefits for a burnout ever since) but slowing down has made me realise how much what I was doing professionally was out of sync with what I am and causing me so much harm and self-doubts. I am in a totally different place now (at least in my head). I am also healthier and have a better relationship with my body and with people in general.

In this first day of the year I have decided to cast two readings with regards to life lessons I have received in 2014 and the ones I will receive in 2015.

The Iching has told be that 2014 has been a year of hex. 8 unchanging. I think I am clear with this and it is very true (not that the Iching is ever wrong of course :bows:) it has meant to reassess everything I had and was to find my own centre. I hold together with myself so much better now.

I am not so sure, though, about the meaning of hex. 12 regarding the lessons to draw from 2015. My Saturnian and pessimistic nature would point to a terrible year of (career) distress and moving away from all the (mental) achievements and breakthroughs I have had in 2014, but the incurable (small) optimistic hope is that it is quite saying the opposite: that this year's challenge will be to shy away from and resist temptations of resuming my old nature, in particular in what related to my career and this will prove even more beneficial.

Serendipitously enough, I have finished reading Voltaire's Candide this morning. The gist of the book is that you don't choose the adversities of your life (and each life is full of them), but if you cultivate your inner garden life will be rewarding. The proviso, however, is that work in the garden is hard and that you should never stop doing it.

Thank you for sharing your impressions of these readings with me,
Happy new year! ;);););)

Hex 8 for 2014 - well what you said it was about seeking union with your inner self and others which is sounded like you've achieved.

Hex 12 for 2015 - time for a change of attitude - what is essentially making you feel stuck? change the way you look at those things.

I feel with readings like this the possibilities of the meaning are endless. Only you will really know what it means when you see it or feel it. When you get that connection. But my idea of it is along the same as Liss.

Perhaps 8 for you was learning what holds you
together or how to hold yourself together. Perhaps it
meant you were seeking unity or perhaps you were the
one to seek unity late and so now you arrive at 12. Could be learning the right timing.

12 could be about learning to overcome what holds you back. Could be about learning to accept when you are in a time of needing to hold back. There could be some more recuperation needed or an inner change happening.

Either way in my opinion, these readings could apply to one event, a current event, or an overall guidance for the year. 2015 will bring the year of the sheep, depending on your chart and sign, that might give you some better ideas.

Best wishes on your journey

Hi Liss and Blue Angel!

First and foremost, thank you so much for your comments.
I think the general direction of hex 12 is the one you pointed: I have to overcome a certain blockage (I want to change careers but I don't dare to because of the current economic climate, uncertainty and self-worth issues).

I have a question to you regarding the reason, you think, that I have cast twice unchanging hexagrams. Do you think this means a particular message from the Iching?

Blue Angel, in Chinese terms I should have a relatively good year (I am a metal Pig), in Western terms Saturn is currently conjoint my descendant (and thus, opposite my ascendant) till September. I know it's a tough but eventually good transit. Due to my chart conformation (stellium in 12th), I had already 4 planets opposed to Saturn over the last 3 years and other one, the last!!!!, is coming in 2016. Then Saturn will be quieter for a while.

I also have another thing to tell you: I really hold dear what you said to me in another post recently and I am still trying to find out the best solution for the three of us :)

Excellent fin de semaine!

Elisabeth

Thank you for your time

Let me offer a view of 12 which may help to diminish your idea of a terrible year of distress, though the rest of what you say in this paragraph can still apply.

If you think of it like breathing, 11 breathes in, 8 holds the breath to oxygenate your internal organs, and 12 breaths out. Our physical universe is currently in a state of 12. That's not a state of "standstill", which I believe is a poor idea of 12 (I also don't like decay as its meaning, other than a body falls apart when it decays), but the particles (planets, stars, etc) are expanding and moving farther apart from the mass, at least according to contemporary physics. We can apply it as individualizing, as when magnetic poles face each other they push away. So while 2014 brought the elements of your world and life together, 2015 separates you as an individual. Your influence on others (gravity) isn't as strong, but your individual development has an opportunity to stretch out, expand, become more yourself. The opportunity for growth is individual, so that when it's again time to be drawn together and hold together, you will have the potential to have more to offer to the whole.

Thank you sooo for this interesting reading.

Thanks to your reading I think now that what it meant was that maybe this year won't be a breakthrough year in terms of what I can do outwardly (and maybe in carreer terms) but maybe I will consolidate my inward beliefs waiting for better times (they better be coming in 2016!)

While I believe in free will, I have also learnt in this interesting year that you cannot push any change if the time is not ready. I don't particularly believe that everything happens for a reason, but that you feel it's your time when it's your time and you make things happen - and I know it's not my time yet. In Western astrological terms, my Saturn has forced me to slow down in every possible domain over the last three years (opposite sun, opposite mercury, opposite chiron, Saturn return) so I am learning the hard way that you need to prune and wait to build solid foundations in your life.

But between 12 and for example 62 I would have hoped to get the latter one :)
Thank you for your time and knowledge,
(I will post comments at the end of the year if I remember to do so)

Have a great start of the week and of 2015!

I think I understand what you mean. Our most natural desire and instinct is to unite, even if it means being lowly, such as in 62. At least we are still moving across the pass upon the mountain, not being "pushed" away and apart. But, once we find our own strength, and understand the meaning of 'the noble develops self-worth through no reliance,' metamorphosis transforms our dependency of collective-involuntary-think or pack mentality to the true individual mature being we were born to become - and with so much more to offer to the collective when the time to unite comes again, even if that unity is internal. I'll borrow a comment from Wilhelm 3: "In order to find one's place in the infinity of being, one must be able both to separate and to unite." Who can truly separate us from the universe anyway? "He who has the courage thus to forego what is near wins what is afar." 59.4

Your 2015 may be what Campbell called "The Hero's Journey".

Yes, please do let us know how your journey goes upon your return. :)

... which squares the circle.
In my first post I mentioned Voltaire's Candide, which is all about a physical journey through every kind of calamity but keeping true to the inner oneself (yet changing ideas when the former have proved to be wrong).

(I will gloss over the rejection of Leibniz's optimism (we live in the best of the worlds) and the overall pessimism (or realism) that critics have seen in the novella - this is not consistent to my view).

I asked the Iching about lessons so I assume this is more an advice (as you read it) than a real threat of disaster, and the rest of your readings.

Thank you once again for your wisdom to the three of you and see you in December!
(and if you have not read the book, I read it on the 31st Dec, it takes possibly half a day and not only is full of wisdom, but also extremely funny!)

A perspective I've learned and adopted from my past career in advertising/marketing, which I also perceive as being infused into the Yi, is that of constructive use of countervailing forces. Sometimes things reach a deadlock and forward progress is rendered impossible, for the time being. But even then there are constructive ways to use that time and ones resources for damage control, fortification for a future advance. It is like sailing, when desiring a due east course against a due west wind, tacking is sometimes only marking time and place until the time and wind direction again shift to more favor ones desired course. Some probably think I put a positive spin on what Yi says, and in a sense that's correct; just as I view h18 as instruction to stir up the stagnation, rather than accept it as an unchangeable condition of decay. I don't deny the existence of decay, but I don't assume I'm forever condemned to that condition. This sounds not different from your description of Candide. Sometimes a healthy dose of creative satire is an effective way to deal with the poisonous effects of pessimism, though it is assured to not be appreciated nor understood by all. I think the best place to start is by learning to laugh at ones self, and second, ones most dire circumstances.

hello everyone,

with only 30 days before the end of this year, I think I have grasped the meaning of this reading.
This year the following things have happened:
1. I have not been able to implement last year's decisions to change career due to a combination of economic stagnation (yes, the cultural sector is even in worse shape than last year) and serendipitous personal offers for work in my sector (friend needing this, friend needing that, word-of-mouth about my abilities, etc)
2. I have started a moderately successful consultancy service; some months have been very intense, but I have been out of work for 3 months; and I also finishing the year on a good economic note;
3. I have found a job starting January 2016 which will provide me an OK salary but quite few benefits, in a "compromise" job that will lead me "partially" away from my career (let's say 20% further) and will include more responsibilities;
4. I have regained lost weight;
5. I have found love;
6. My illness is still not defeated.

Apart from point 5, I think the rest can be read through hex. 12. Small works? Consultancy service. Stagnation? Not being able to change your career-habits etc.
What I find very fascinating is that in spite of being an unchanging hex, I can read through the lines, situation after situation. Let me explain: I started the year on line 1 (friendship brought business) and worked my way through line 6 ( a job I did not get than got). I don't know if it is a common or accepted way to read an unchanging hex, but it makes sense to me, especially keeping into consideration the breadth of my question.
Thanks for your insights and wisdom, they have accompanied me through this complicated, yet very rich year,

Elisabeth
