Please help me understand the meaning of, "constancy"?

Hexagram 3 changes to Hexagram 2

I just asked for advice regarding this a few minutes ago, but I can't find the post. Please pardon any inadvertent redundancy. Thanks in advance for any clarification you can offer.

I consulted the Oracle regarding a business/legal type situation and seek to understand the answer.

I'm not very clear about the question?
Please help me understand the meaning of, "constancy"?

At first I thought the question was 'help me understand the meaning of constancy?' but then you say you consulted about a business situation so was the cast which was 3.1.5>2 about the meaning of constancy or the business situation?

Or are you generally asking about the meaning of constancy? I think of it as being genuine, having truth towards something, putting your best self in, persevering. Sometimes it's worth it and sometimes it isn't and in 3.5 it suggests putting your all in is not the way to go

Here is the Hilary's translation and commentary from wiki which is very helpful about the constancy in line 5

'Sprouting, your essence.
Small constancy, good fortune.
Great constancy, pitfall.'

'Essence' probably means really good food - like the pheasant juices in 50.3. 'Sprouting, nourish yourself on...'

Constancy: truth to self, truth to idea, loyalty to principle, steady willingness to carry through. Small constancy would be flexible about this, loyal only to the idea, finding lines of least resistance towards it; great constancy would insist on implementing it in its own way.

So if this were applied to effort in business you probably wouldn't want to throw your whole self into it but hold back a bit, accepting it's probably not a time for major profit or development but still a good time to get things going or keeping them going with a certain amount of attention.

3.1 counsels one to stay where one finds oneself and explore from there. So overall this is quite a tentative cast as if things are in the very early stages and with 2 as relating they could flourish and grow or they could fall back to nothing. Think of the bible parable about seeds on rocky soil and seeds on good soil, that's what 2 makes me think of here. It's not hopeless to go forward with a venture here but it is going to take acceptance that things can't flourish as you might like straight away. Certainly the cast doesn't seem to encourage very bold moves or over confidence, it seems far more cautious than that. I find disappointment can be a theme in line 5 since very often the querent really would like more than they get with this line.

I think right now it's a question of blending factors, seeing what works and what doesn't.

Within the realms of your business / legal type situation Yi is guiding you towards seeing constancy as holding everything in suppleness / flexibility (2) while not leaving your dwelling place (3).

I see this as saying constancy needs to be understood in this situation as something akin to keep calm and carry on. It may be that in this situation you will have to work hard at not getting hot under the collar about certain matters.

... or it might not mean anything at all like this for you.

Good Luck

I've had "constancy" come up for situations that require repeating efforts like to learn to play the piano one must regularly practice or for a diet to work one must stick with it.
