A short time back we had a discussion I remember about hexagram 5. Waiting and the question came up, Who are the three uninvited guests who show up at line 5.6 whom one is advised to honor? I don't know what the final answer was but today it occurred to me that the three guests could represent ourselves from former lifetimes or people who helped get us where we are today (out of the blood pit and into feasting), and that by honoring - assisting - those who come to us in need we are somehow balancing the karmic scales as we do good for others in memory of the good done for us.

I don't think the uninvited guests are those who have helped us already in the past.
The text would mention it somehow by using such words as ancestor, friend, servant, fellow, father.

Three guests - are the three yang lines from the lower trigram, active creative force that brings change - 3 means change in Yi. Circumstances have changed, come with us they say.
In reality I think it can be anything - a person or a group of people, or an e-mail, ad on the side of the bus, word on the radio etc.

It's more important that they are uninvited, that they come by surprise, to your filthy pit of a house.
My commentary puts this one together.

Yes. to me "the pit" is like saying "your man cave" or something like that. Waiting in blood get out of the pit is like get out and get your blood moving. The lines kind of describe how people act, in the meadow it is like going to a temple or church, or the wonder of nature and the stars (abiding in what endures), in sand you go to the beach, in mud it's messy and demands a lot of you... At some point you fall into your home yet people you have met because you are circulating in society and not just isolating yourself, come and want to help you. The point here is that you have the state of mind not to be so cynical you do not honor or value people because you are maybe tired and beat up or don't think much of yourself, they actually want to help you if you let them. It's kind of like leaving the cover off the well in feeling anyway, but maybe more active, receive the help some people are willing to give you, there are people out there like that.

I was hesitant to post my thoughts and yet here you've all given me such unexpected, useful insights!
I am amazed.
Thank you, Three Uninvited (but most welcome!) Guests!

Rosada you have helped a lot of people! Waiting is my "Life is what happens while you are busy making other plans" hex. My impression is you don't have what you desire exactly, or maybe you are trying to get your heart back together, something like that - so what do you do in the meantime? .

Line 1 "Waiting in the meadow." - First you turn to upwards and inwards, you "Abide in what endures." You cast the iChing, you pray, you go to a National Park, you talk to the stars, go camping, try to settle your soul.

Line 2 "Waiting on the sand." - You try to relax, go to the beach, have some low key fun... People like to talk about things, some people's talk is messing with others, you can't always control who is on the beach, but hey... You need a little time.

Line 3 "Waiting in the mud" - You have to get back to work, maybe you kinda of lose yourself in being busy. It's draining and takes effort, and when you lose yourself in your job you can also lose that sense of centeredness you were working on, anxiousness and negative feelings can arise.

Line 4 "Waiting in blood. Get out of the pit." - You're at home and feeling wiped out, but you really need to get out of there and get your physical and metaphoric blood circulating, create a flow of energy and chi, circulate socially.

Line 5 - "Waiting at meat and drink. Perseverance brings good fortune." See you feel a lot better when you get yourself moving in the company of other people. It is also good to eat when you are feeling low!

Line 6 - "One falls into the pit. Three uninvited guests arrive. Honor them, and in the end there will be good fortune." You are tired and fall into your home, but people call you and offer opportunities for work, social events, invite you. Do not insult them by rejecting their offers, this is how you are going to find what you are looking for in the first place, this is the path...
