Long story short, my in-laws sent out a care package from Japan in early December by surface mail and it has yet to arrive. Given the pandemic situation it make sense that it’s late, but parcels sent by boat usually get here within 6 weeks, and it’s now pushing 3 months.

I asked, “Where is the package?” And got 37.1 > 53. “Enclosing and guarding the family. Regrets vanish.” My only guess here is that it’s stuck in customs (line 1), but slowly making its way here (hex 53).

Any ideas? I’m particularly stumped with the text in line 1 and the references to family.

As a follow up I asked “When will the package arrive?” Yi’s answer: 21.1>35. Hm? Is yi saying, “Dunno. It’s stuck for now.”?

It would help to know what a 'care package' is ? In the UK a 'care package' is an arrangement made with social services or care agencies for help for the elderly or sick or disabled or so on. Hence it is not something one sends by post but something one arranges with other people such as 'the care package is the carers will visit twice a day' and so on.

It's just that 37.1 is to do with care, its to do with making boundaries to keep the child safe. 37.1 very much connects to care and they sent a 'care package'. Is Yi making a comment about what has been sent or what it's been sent for ?

I wonder if rather than talk about the package for example Yi is discussing care in the family ? But without knowing if a 'care package' has something to do with caring for others in the family it's hard to say.

As a direct answer to where it is ? Well 37.1 is basically to do with making barriers for a home to exist at all. Without walls there's no home, without a division between inner and outer there's no inside. In general we can see 37 as inside and I'm wondering if you are being told something literal about barriers between inner and outer of countries. I think it will arrive and has been delayed at borders for all good reasons. 37.1 is like a picture of a country making sure it's home to it's people by making barriers.

When will it arrive ? 21.1 feet in stocks, well having your feet in stocks is embarrassing, stops you doing anything or going anywhere. It does sound well and truly held up at a border.

It definitely sounds like it’s just going through the process of getting here and it’s with one in the chain of departments (family members) ie. customs, postal service.

Sorry, I assumed this usage of the term is universal, but looking at the dictionary entry online it appears it is limited to North America. Anyway, it refers to “a package of useful or pleasurable items that is sent or given as a gift to another (such as a college student)” (Webster)

In this particular case, it’s a box of goodies that my in laws sent to us—mostly gifts for my 6-year-old daughter, who’s very eager for her belated Christmas/New Year’s presents!

Thanks becalm. I never thought about interpreting “family” as a government entity, but now that you mention it that makes perfect sense, considering Eastern thinking re “the family as a model for the state.”

hi Amaterasu,

I will try to give you an answer in a different way by mainly using the trigrams and not the text of the Yi.
It is possible that I am completely wrong with my interpretation, but who know.

Hexagram 37 has trigram Lí, Fire, below or inside, Xún, Wind, above or outside.

- The lower trigram Fire is related to the package
- The outside trigram Wind is related to the location of the package.

The way I see it is that the package at the time you were asking the question was still in Japan.
Japan is also called the Land of the Rising sun => trigram Fire. (Nice detail, this trigram |:| is similar to the flag of Japan (white background with a red dot in the middle)).

The trigram Fire is unbalanced because of its moving line on position one.
One is the position of the begin, the start and because it is unbalanced it indicates that something went wrong in the beginning in the land of the Rising Sun (Fire).
I wouldn't be surprised if this has something to do with the prepayment of the package (not an English native so i hope this is clear, not enough stamps or something like that).

The reason I think this, is because the lower trigram is the question (what went wrong) and the upper trigram the answer. In this case the image of the upper trigram Wind (Xún) is seals . (Xùn is a picture of a table with seals on it). Seems to me a nice representation of stamps.

The core hexagram of hex. 37 is hex. 64. To make this not to long I won't use the trigrams, but the title of 64 -> Not Yet Across/Unfinished Business. No explanation needed i think.

In the relating hex. 53 the lower trigram Fire is balanced by trigram Mountain. The attributes of Mountain are slow, solid, conservative etc. the core hexagram is still 64. So I believe it will take some time, before the package will arrive

I hope this will help you or at least amuse and not bore you :)

Thank you Willem.

However, since writing this post, my husband received a message from his father, who is also apparently a bit concerned about how long this is taking and called Japan Post for answers. The package (supposedly) left Japan on December 5, and its last known location is New Jersey, where the boat it’s supposed to be on docked. That was February 12.

So either the package was never put on that boat—in which case you may be right—or it’s sitting in a pile somewhere in New Jersey waiting to get sorted/inspected.

Non-Yi related but if it's going through USPS then it may just be stalled somewhere but still on the way. I sent something to a location 70 miles away last December (that's 110km) within PA and it took a month to get to its destination. For whatever reason USPS has become slower and slower over the last few months.

It is indeed going through USPS, but they don’t seem to be in possession of it yet. When I enter the tracking number, I get a message saying, “Origin Post is Preparing Shipment
We have received notice that the originating post is preparing to dispatch this mail piece.” It also only shows it leaving Japan in early December and nothing after that. Of course this is USPS, so who knows.

There is a reason, and that reason has a name: Postmaster General Louis DeJoy! But if what you say is true, then perhaps PA is a Bermuda Triangle for parcels. After all, it’s the only state standing between me and NJ. ;)

I was dancing around that but yes, it is he. Seeing him gone would be DeJoy of my life. Good luck in the PA triangle lol.

I think 37.1 suggests it being stuck between customs and being allowed to enter into the US, a distinct boundary between international and domestic. Somebody may have already said that. Also 53 suggests that it will gradually reach you. I'm guessing within 2 weeks. (Why? I don't know.)
