How do you interpret moving lines when they seem to contradict each other?
Which line takes priority? The highest in number?

It can be very confusing as in 13.5.6
.5 talks of one of the sweetest of all human bonds
.6 true warmth and connection lacking

It can't be both.

This is probably old hat to the more experienced readers, but as ever I am most greatful for your insight and helping me to learn.

Lise once posted:
"Mom says to a small child "Go play outside, but don't go onto the street. The cars will hit you, that hurts!!" (Bad bad omen). "Button up your coat, you will stay warm and feel good" (Good omen) Two lines, no problem for a child, he is not going to join those two together, and get a contradiction."

Hello,

The advise in the lines is not contradictory. You need a better I Ching source to connect the meanings.

Hexagram 13 line 5 is about what you fear will probably happen but at the end all will turn out well. Be simple and sincere in speech you'll survive and be with your friend again.

Line 6 reveals that a new cycle begins. There's no reason to be sad or worried. There is no common goal yet. Be open and friendly you are in a new and unknown situation or direction. Where one thing is ending and something new is about to start.

Hi Lodestar,

I agree with Moss Elk and Cornucopia and would add I also like to think of individual lines in terms of a range of elements that may come into play in the greater hexagram(s) picture. Sometimes the lines are in accord sometimes not. Some can show what to avoid and others what to move toward. Some can be meant to apply at one time, others at another.

If 13.5.6 were your only two lines moving, then the full reading was 13.5.6>55. So, imo, the bigger picture would be powerful abundance (55) seeking expression in the greater good of fellowship (13).

In that context, 13.5 could easily be related to the difficulties implied in the potential discord between discernment and action a 55 situation might involve. And, I'd see 13.6 as a warning not to focus all one’s energy on it to the detriment of distancing oneself from one's community support.

I'd not overestimate line 5, nor underestimate line 6. These are potentials, which you and this other person determine. I've received line 5, when in spite of Wilhelm's quoting of Confucius' flowery prose, the person was the very last person I'd care to have a sweet relationship with, though a reconciliation, be it every so unlikely to be stable and trustworthy, presented itself as possible. Likewise, I've had correspondence and fellowship in the meadow which was very worthwhile.

55 can mean feeling overwhelmed and unable to decide. Don't be overwhelmed, be clear like the sun at midday, and decide.

Avoid absolutes and see them as potentials and choices instead. It is your life to live after all. The Way is not paved in stone, it's more like water, unless you freeze.

I've met those cases too and found that there exist many options as to how solving this problem. Lookin at those solutions as a whole Lisee's seems logical to me ie that every and each line should be taken into consideration: read the section Multiple moving lines , here: http://www.yijing.nl/i_ching/structures/structures.htm#multiple

A deep-in-research on this problem have been sought solved in this article: http://www.biroco.com/yijing/Shih-chuan_Chen.pdf (A critical commentary on this article, here: http://www.russellcottrell.com/VirtualYarrowStalks/NanjingiRules.htm )

also look at the change pattern your changing lines make. the yang pattern here (if all change lines were yang) is hexagram 20 so the question is flavoured with a 20ish feel. Apart from what you take from hex 13 and the lines, in general this is about something 13ish you are viewing or considering. If we make the change lines yin and the rest yang we have the yin change pattern, suggesting the way to flow through the situation, here is 34. Overall it looks like you are coming to a time where you need to make a choice (55) you have been viewing/considering There is nothing to stop you making that choice now and going on through with vigour (34).

so overall I'd take the answer as saying you are having/have had time to think...it's choice time. Make that choice clearly and in the light of what you feel is the right thing to do (34) and be vigorous about it
