The editors of the OED think it started in England as "bling bling", an onomotopoeic expression for the sound jewelry makes tinkling against itself.
There's a word for this in Chinese: Lu (96+8) that Laozi uses at the end of Chapter 39: "Do not long to dazzle & jingle like jade - Clunk & clatter like rocks"
