I've been feeling really stuck at work. Although I have a good job and am around nice people, this job is not my passion and I don't feel like I'm contributing to society - something I've realized is my professional goal. The type of job I seek is closer to what I use to do before I went back to school and joined my current firm - and combines both the previous and current experiences, along with my education, in a development or public service role. Over the past few months I've reaching out to alums, contacts and applying for jobs closer aligned to what I'd like to do but have been hitting a dead end with every lead so far. Needless to say, I'm frustrated!! Although I am maintaining a positive attitude and see the good in my life.

With this as background, I asked the question "I wanted a career in x, y and z and feel like a dead end. What should I do?" Got 14 back.

Then I asked "What are the prospects for a new job in x, y and z?" with 24.2 -> 19 back.

These sound positive, especially 24 is so eloquently and beautifully written that it made me feel better just reading them, but I'm hoping that someone more knowledgeable than me can shed some light!

I asked the question "I wanted a career in x, y and z and feel like a dead end. What should I do?" Got 14 back.

14 - Meeting the demands

Addressing the needs if the means are available.

Crystal clear. But to understand this you need a little insight on hexagram 14. The hexagram 14 has a yin line at the fifth position and five yang lines around. The fifth position is the position of the ruler. Yin lines receive and yang lines give.

It's generally accepted that the hexagram 14 represents great wealth, as possession in great measure. But when you are a wealthy ruler you don't always receive gifts, you are also asked for support (yin represents the Earth element, so it is in its nature to support). That's why the hexagram 14 also represents receiving a lot of support requests. The comment of the line 5 is about receiving too much, whether it is receiving too many requests or too many gifts, at some point you cannot handle anymore.

So, the hexagram 14 tells you that you should care about the demands. You will get a successful career by meeting the demands not by working in the domains you are most comfortable with. You need to adapt to the needs of the period.

Another interpretation is that there are many demands actually and you will have to compete with a lot people to obtain a job like that, if even one is available that is.

"What are the prospects for a new job in x, y and z?" with 24.2 -> 19 back.

Hexagram 24 is about returning. More than often it is about returning from our errors. I've made a mistake but I repair it fast, it's 24.1, I've made a mistake and recognize it then it's 24.5, i don't want to fix my mistake it's 24.6...

It's not only about mistakes, but it looks to me that the Yi tells you that you are about to make a mistake. 24.2 is about recognizing a mistake like 24.5 but before making it.

If you think that the Yi is not talking about a mistake then you'll need to find a different interpretation for the return.

24 - To return

One returns to see the results of their action.

2 - One needs to return.
In the making
19 - To accompany

One calls the youngest so they come back.

I cannot elaborate much more but two possibilities are that the Yi is telling you that you need to return to a previous job, or to reconsider your decision. Maybe someone here will find alternate interpretations.

Thanks for the thoughtful response taoscopy!

On the first question and 14, both of those things are true - there are a few skills that would be useful to pick up and also there is a lot of competition. I have been slacking a bit in picking up these skills, mostly because I've been unsure if they'll be useful if I actually can't make the switch (those skills wouldn't be particularly useful on my current career path) but I'm willing to take this as a sign that I need to actively engage in these.

On the second question and 24.2->19, I have been wanting to return to old job and move back to where I use to live but there are no opportunities available right now. I've reached out to my old coworkers over the past few months and unfortunately they don't have much available. So I'd love to return if I could :)

Alternatively, something I wonder if I should just stick it out in corporate America for a few years and then do something of my own, hence the mistake of trying to switch jobs and not being fully invested where I am now??
