Hi there,
another work question but hopefully a bit of a puzzle!
I asked what is likely to happen with a new project I'm taking on, and got 29:1, 5 to 19...
EEEEEEEK!!!!
Was a bit disconcerted, didn't think there was anything which would be that bad!
So I decided to ask for some more detail: "can you tell me a bit more about the nature of the danger?" 14:3,4 to 41 which sounds a little bit less scary, being generous and bringing benefit to others?
I'm in the proposal writing stage, and have made sure its clear that I fulfil all the criteria but have also decided to share the benefit by including others to fulfil some of the responsibility, but this makes me think I need to be careful about sounding too arrogant...
would love to hear your thoughts on this,
E

14:3,4 — 41

Looks like you have heard the advice from 29-19 . and you understood it.

If 29 is the present and 19 the future, I see no inauspiciousness. Things at their beginning are tender and weak and easily injured. A slight miscalculation that does not meet the mark could throw the whole project into a pit. For 19, Blofeld says: "In this hexagram, the strong is watered and grows well." A cautious beginning should lead to a project that grows.

Thanks Gato and Pocossin,
I do tend to go into a bit of a panic when I see 29! It seems like there are things I can do to mitigate the danger, will let you know what happens!

take care, as you will plunge into directly into abyss. you probably will find a way to bring things back into balance but is not going to be an easy ride. hex 19 is not the future, is the background and indicates that things on 29 approach.

I do tend to go into a bit of a panic when I see 29!
that is good !

No need for panic. The pit -- one's dark side -- is also the yin house, the source of the waters of ancestral influence in the unconscious mind. If your project needs inspiration and imagination, 29 implies you may expect help from hidden sources.

I'm still going to try not to panic, and be well prepared instead (even if Gato thinks panic is a good idea)!!! ;) Thanks again both of you,

A Money Pit

"can you tell me a bit more about the nature of the danger?" 14:3,4 to 41
For someone in business, this is not good. The H41 signifies to me that this project will probably not show a profit.

The reason is this, 14.3. You know how it is at the beginning of a new project: a large outlay of cash. This project will demand more than most. If you don't watch out, you'll end up with no profit at all on this project. It's almost like you'll end up volunteering so much of your current resources that it'll be more like a volunteer job than a paying job.

14.4 says 'By avoiding ostentation, he averts harm.' You would need to pare everything down to the essentials. Nothing fancy. Otherwise you'll be digging yourself into an even deeper cavern beneath this money-pit. You would have to monitor every single little expenditure.

You also received 29.5, and the text says that the danger will pass and you'll come to no harm -- probably because you'll see the necessity of taking some measures to protect your resources, by being very thrifty and keeping a very close tab on all expenses. You had better think of ways to simplify and so forth, too, because a project like this can be very demanding of time and energy, not just money.

I'm wondering if the contract has already been signed, or if you can still wiggle out of this. I'm assuming you are not in business to lose money, but I realize that sometimes there's a method in the madness. It might look like a great opportunity for some other reason. Knowing ahead of time that it's a hex 29 situation, sometimes by changing our plans in certain ways we can successfully nip the danger in the bud.

Hi Ginnie,
thanks for your thoughts. I'm not sure though that money is what this is referring to. With what I do for a living (consultancy) I basically have no overheads to speak of, and this project is likely to cost me (at the most) a couple of marker pens and maybe a few books for research and the odd train ticket, although as most of it would take place in my city, I won't even need the train tickets. I work from home, and from client's premises, and the budget for the project (what I would get paid) includes all expenses. It will be time consuming though, even though it is very well paid. So its very unlikely if not impossible that I could lose money by doing this. It maybe referring to resources though in terms of time and energy...

Probably, like I mentioned before, don't take on more than you can handle otherwise you will be up to your neck in it.

Not Going to Budge

don't take on more than you can handle otherwise you will be up to your neck in it.
Excellent advice! Edge, the I Ching has warned you for good reason.

Some clients are exceedingly demanding of our energies. We lay awake nights trying to solve their problems and unraveling the complications. You really have to watch it, because you have already dug yourself mentally into a cavern beneath the bottom pit. Your attitude is that you are not going to budge.

That is, you have said to yourself, "If I dig in my heels and don't budge, how can I get hurt?" But the I Ching has told you that you are at the very bottom of repeating pits and have dug yourself down even deeper . . .

Maybe you might tell me: What does 29.1 mean to you?

Because to me it means that you've been living in a time of danger. And in an attempt to get out of the danger, you have taken a wrong turn and are going in the wrong direction. Of course, I cannot know all the details, but I don't have to know them, as the line itself says it all.

New Project

What's likely to happen with the new project - Hex 29,1,5 > 19

Another approach to this answer is to view it from an internal perspective. I've often received Hex 29 when my question to the I Ching has been prompted by doubt or a negative assumption - when I've fallen into a pit, albeit unknowingly. The text for line one states exactly that: 'In the abyss one falls into a pit ... One falls into the abyss because one has lost the way.' This doesn't mean that there is anything wrong with the project, it's simply saying that your question, in itself, reveals that you've 'lost the way' in that it was prompted by doubt and uncertainty. If you combine this with the Zhi Gua for this line, Hex 60, Limitation, then you can see that the I Ching is saying 'You've fallen into a pit of uncertainty, try to limit or discipline your negative fears.'
Fifth yang - 'The abyss is not filled to overflowing. It is filled only to the rim. No blame.' - in order to extricate oneself here, it isn't necessary to be overly zealous or excessive; simply adjust your perception to meet reality - this is using true yang to see yin. The Zhi Gua for this line, Hex 7, The Army, reflects the need for maturity, self-discipline and control. If the younger brother is put in charge (of the self) then corpses will ensue.
Hex 19, Approach, suggests that the time is right to move with the flow of events - the project.

Can you tell me more about the nature of the danger... Hex 14,3,4 > 41

This reading should be taken in the context of the above, previous reading. Hex 14, often occurs in relation to protecting something of great value. In addition to a literal external possession, it can also refer to guarding our perception of truth, principle etc. Line 3 - 'A prince offers it to the Son of Heaven. A petty man cannot do this' - can indicate the need to sacrifice a narrow misconception in order to protect and serve a more universal truth. The Zhi Gua for this line, Hex 38, Opposition, reflects the misunderstanding caused by holding to a wrong assumption - the 'petty man.' The danger that you fear is a misconception.
Fourth yang - 'If one rejects such plenitude, there will be no blame,' (Wang Bi) - the 'plenitude' that is to be rejected is the forceful misconception held by third yang. Fourth yang's position is somewhat precarious, a yang line in a yin position hence not in its correct place, it must reject third yang's vigorous advance and support true principle (fifth yin). It can only do this if it can discriminate effectively 'between its neighbours' - third yang and fifth yin. The Zhi Gua for this line, Hex 26, Taming Power of the Great, mirrors the need to exercise great restraint in taming third yang's advance.
Hex 41, Decrease, can be applied here in two of its aspects. On the one hand it suggests giving up or sacrificing something (the misconception) in order to increase a more universal perception; it also suggests the need to restrict or decrease any fragmentation of self-direction. This reading, 14,3,4 > 41, is urging you to distinguish the truth here and reject the false conception of danger, in order to protect the 'great possession' of true perception, and the real opportunity of your new project.
The two nuclear hexagrams from this reading (Hex 43, Kuai to Hex 24, Fu) give a parallel representation of the meaning of the primary hexagrams, but in reverse ie. the vigorous expulsion of a false yin value and return of true perception.

Hope this helps.

Peter

There is the lure of money, but there seems also to be the need for thought about how to economize and simplify -- on all levels.

My suggestions are: Don't go out of your way to impress the new client. Be as if you possessed nothing and don't need to demonstrate anything. You don't need to explain things, either.

Self-employed people are very hardworking but can have a tendency to work so hard they end up giving more than they are receiving -- on all levels. Think of ways to make this easy on yourself!

thank you Ginnie and Peter, its really helpful for me to compare your two very different interpretations of these readings and I think there's a lot of food for thought in both. Ginnie, I'm taking your suggestions on board, and a thought occurred to me about 29:1, lessons you keep having to learn until you get it (!) and I realise that even if I don't have big capital outlay for my work, often I do work until 2am having promised to over deliver, which means my day rate isn't quite as good as it looks on paper!! So you have to think about money in different ways...
Peter, its really interesting what you say, as I do have a lot of negative fears abou this project and not coming up to scratch...and funnily enough 7 unchanging has come up before in terms of how I need to approach it. Will be very very careful how I approach this...

Self-employed people have the worst work habits of anybody. If some boss told you you had to work until 2 a.m., you'd be furious and walk out!

Hexagram 14 is very interesting, because it represents the way we protect the wealth we already possess, whatever form that wealth might be in: money, knowledge, people who are precious to us, our house, and so forth.

H14 accompanies relationships in which people do not get carried away. With H14, the emotions and the instincts are very much under control. That connects with what you were saying about getting H7.

Quite often the client has no idea how much work went into our product. Not a clue. And that can lead to deep resentments down the line. We need to be able to assess how much we can do -- without overdoing anything.

Don't you want to have some time and energy left over for your family and other aspects of your life?

Quick update...so the 29 really was an abyss to fall into in this case! At the last minute, having wasted a lot of my time, energy and used quite a bit of my intellectual property, the client decided to give the project to someone else. Big shock, and very unpleasant, and without going into details, legally their conduct represents both breach of contract and discrimination (although my feeling is to walk away rather than take action)...Funnily enough though I do feel okay, bit battered and bruised but ready to move on, and more work has come from other sources to fill the gap. Thought it might be useful to see what the reading actually referred to as at the time I had no idea any of this would happen!! Thanks again for your interpretations,
E

Really sorry to hear that. But, in a way, glad to hear the I Ching reading was confirmed.

When we get 29.1 > 60, then 60, Restraint/Self-Control is the relating hexagram. The implication is that we'll overspend of ourselves and our resources.

These days, when I get H60, I don't do that, whatever I was thinking of doing.

I wonder, is there any way to reign ourselves in, Edge, and do what we love to do in a more measured, moderate way?

Or is that pretty much impossible ... due to the creative nature of it?

The hexagram for creativity is Hexagram One. And sometimes when I get going, I go all the way to the top and get the top line moving, too. That's not so good, because anything to excess can turn destructive or very negative. Then our whole life and everybody in it appears to also change in a negative way.

Yet that is the nature of creativity.
