I was reading hexagram 24, Return, and noted the dire assessment of 24.6. It discribes a general who suffers a great defeat due to blind obstinacy. As I have been noting the parallels between the hexagram we are studying in the Memorization thread and the actual events in our world, reading this caused me to wonder what state the world will be in when we are at hexagram 24, which will be in about 3 months. Hopefully this line will turn out to connect with some minor experience and not the fall of nations. But anyway, this line of thinking did lead me to wonder what President Bush is going through now, what with the new Democratic congress and the more visable anti-war sentiment. So I asked the I Ching "What should Bush do now, concerning Iraq?"

"What should Bush do now, concerning Iraq?" 16.5 > 45"

Hex 16.5 Bush is under constant pressure with the problem of Iraq because it just will not go away and all Bush's plans meet with setbacks but he won't give up.

Hex 45 suggests that Bush should do his utmost to unite the peoples of Iraq under a good leader, he should use the religious leaders on both sides to gather the people together under one flag, Islam. When that has been achieved then some progress will be made to end the conflict.

Both 16.5 and 45 refer to the presence of religious forces, but I don't see this as necessarily a call for Bush to promote Islam. On one level, I'm reading it as a referance to Bush's strong personal belief that he has a spiritual calling to do what he is doing, and that perhaps as we recognize that, that is recognize that we are dealing with someone who is delusional, perhaps then we will get a better insight into his psychology and know how to manuver him. But perhaps this answer can also be read as saying Bush OUGHT to be more forth coming about his own religious beliefs. Perhaps if he were to speak more openly about his spirituality it would open up a dialog that could lead to something positive.

I've been mulling over your ideas today, Willowfox, and it seems to me that our insights are not mutually exclusive. I mean, you're suggesting the IC is saying Bush should promote
a united Iraq under the banner of Islam, where as I'm thinking it would be good if Bush would talk more openly about his own spiritual beliefs, that perhaps then instead of seeming delusional, people would actually begin to be able to get where he's coming from. Anyway, maybe he should be doing both. Talking about his own spiritual beliefs and talking about Islam. Perhaps a clearer understanding of religion is just what humanity is needing at this time. Or maybe he should just bring back 50 mile hikes - isn't hex.16 about leading marches?

Well, hex 45 is about uniting the people, and as it can't be done politically then there is only their faith that can possibily unite them under a new leader. Bush's job now is to get all parties talking to each other to find a solution, the opposing religious leaders need to be consulted and brought into the picture. Bush started the problem but he just can't stop it, so it is down to the people of Iraq to find their own solution, Bush's powers of inflence waned quite some time ago. I think that a new president has to be found to govern Iraq as the present one is not liked and certainly not up to the job of uniting his people. I don't think anyone cares about Bush's spiritual beliefs, they want him out of the picture and the mess sorted out.

I think perhaps I've brought too much of my anti-Bush prejudice to reading this line. I'm trying to imagine how I would interpret 16.5 - 45 if I were being guided to see that Bush ought to stay the course. 45.5 certainly encourages him to keep at it. Seems that when ever I think I've formed a streight question the I Ching always finds loopholes. Here, IC seems to be saying Bush is doing exactly what he ought to do in order to be true to the law of his being (16.5 Don't give up, 45. Renew weapons) but what I really wanted to know was how can Bush bring an end to the conflict. Hmmm...

He can't.

Bush:

More about values than facts.
More about what was/is/will-be.
Issue is if he is reactive or proactive. Either way he maps to the trigrams of water/wind and the generic persona category of security-seeking, trust no one and so up go borders (water, keep things in/out, focus on protection, maps to the emotion of rejection issues) and the need for continual management (wind, need for management - maps to the emotion of anticipation of wrong doing (reactive form) that can become anticipation of right doing (cultivation - proactive form))

There are 16 hexagrams covered for security seeking, 8 by water, 8 by wind.

Water:

07,04 29,59 40,64 47,06

Wind:

46,18 48,57 32,50 28,44

Pure water is 29 - 010010. Focus on containment/control issues. Infrastructure described by:

010010
100001
-------
110011 = 61, hard exterior, soft interior; yielding, empathising issues and so brings out a focus protecting.

Pure wind is 57 - 011011 focus on cultivation/becoming influencial. Negative side is anticipating of wrong, positive side is anticipation of right.

Infrastructure:

011011
100001
-------
111010 = 09, focus on making small gains to eventually stand upon to be noticed.

etc etc etc

use 63 to map the 'neutraliser' of these hexagrams in general. E.g. to neutralise an exaggeration of 29, over containment/over control:

010010
101010
-------
111000 = 11, focus on mediation to harmonise/balance out.

For 57 and its focus on exaggeration of anticipations (good or bad)

011011
101010
-------
110001 = 41, focus on distillation, concentration, extract the 'pure' elements from the anticipations and so 'ground' things; avoid too much 'waving of hands' - aka fanciful anticipations.

Richmond says something interesting about 16.5: it is about carrying around old feelings that have lost their vitality.
So the advice to Bush is to let go of the past?

16.5 corresponds to Neptune in Leo and Mars in Aquarius in my astrology, so I wondered if Bush has a Mars-Neptune theme in his chart. I just looked it up on the web and came across the chart of his father.
Bush sr. has Neptune in Leo and Mars in Aquarius, amazing 'coincidence'!
Should Bush jr. let go of his father then?
Makes sense,he probably did go into Iraq at least partly because he wanted to finish the job of senior.

Bush jr. doesn't have a clear Mars-Neptune theme, but his Venus in the first house is conjunct his father's Neptune and in opposition to his Mars. Feelings for his father and what he did?
