Thank you for your insight. Sometimes you just have to love someone with open arms, and if it is at a distance release them to the Universe for safekeeping. I miss my friend greatly, but I know she is where she needs to be and with the people she needs to be with as she makes this very important change in her life.

My cat is a 13 y/o Calico who spends nearly all of her time sleeping. About every 3-4 days she decides to stop eating for a day or two, with no apparent reason. Several people have said it's time to put her down, excluding the vet. She still plays with the younger cat(10 y/o) and her toys, gets on top of the kitchen ceiling (I have a vaulted main ceiling with a false ceiling in place to define the kitchen) and loves a day in the window sill when the sun is out.

Congrats on your fella - he's really an old timer

After really studying all of the Hxs the answer was as plain as the nose on my face.

A heartfelt welcome, Ninepatch... Good to have you onboard.

"However, I couldn't wrap my head around "superior" and "inferior" which were everywhere in the reading. We are in every way equals and not superior to the other. Then it hit me - there is a place where Superior and Inferior are eaqual and necassary - the human heart. The Superior Vena Cava takes blood into the right ventricle from the upper body. The Inferior Vena Cava takes it from the lower body. It makes things clearer to me."

The first time I thought I can get a glance of understanding what "inferior and superior people" really mean, was when I read "The Pilosophy of the I Ching" http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0960383220/ref=pd_sim_art_elt/104-9628333-3035905?v=glance
and "The Guide to the I Ching".

Hi Beth,

I must wholeheartedly agree with Candid. That analogy about Superior/Inferior and the heart function was very, very novel and accurate. I've never thought about it.

One is always surprised at the ways knowledge seem to find its way into one's mind.

Well done!

Cheers,

Luis

Thank you for the referral to Carol Anthonys' books. They both look very interesting. My first translation book arrived today, so I've got some reading to do! I've added these to my wish list.

This is all so incredibly intense and wonderful - I wish now I had chosen the Yi project in that class in college!

A short note on that third line changing. I mentioned before, the third line often trying to get into the upper hexagram... Another way to look at this is that the third line is in the place of transition. It is moving from the lower hexagram to the upper. This is somewhat analogous of "crossing the great water..."

The fifth hexagram is the first one that specifically mentions "crossing the great water." In the fifth hexagram the third line is correct. It is a yang line in a yang position. It also properly correlates with the sixth line. Nevertheless, it is in the place of transition. (Eventually, I will try to find the address for the work I did on this website relating to the first and second hexagram and how to use them to understand the meanings of all the changing lines thereafter, but for now, we'll just get into it this far). The changing yang lines in each hexagram after the first follow a pattern created in the first hexagram. This is colored of course by the meaning of the hexagram itself, but as a general rule.... In the first hexagram, line 3 says, "All day long the superior man is creatively active. At nightfall he is still beset with cares. Danger. No blame." Therefore we know that whenever we have a changing yang third line, that there is at least some danger associated with it. This is very true in the fifth hexagram. The lines in the fifth hexagram so a progression of danger, and especially the third and fourth line are trapped. They are caught in the mud and the enemy is closing in. This hexagram is about crossing the great water, but here, being trapped in the mud indicates they cannot cross. Another hexagram that comes to mind that involves crossing the great water, is hexagram 26. Here we have a similar situation. The judgment here advices us to be "aware of danger." And because of that danger, we are counselled to "practice chariot driving daily."

So far what I have written can be found in several good books on the I Ching. The following I have not seen written in any book. It is simply a conclusion I have come to in my studies. Therefore it is not to be taken as the gospel truth, but just something to consider. I submit that the book of changes as a whole is a document that directly or indirectly counsels either to cross the great water, or not cross. And the third line, the line of transition has set before him/her, the task of crossing. This is the place of transition. The fourth line has already crossed the great water. Therefore, the third and fourth line have a special relationship with hexagrams 63 and 64. Hexagram 63 has crossed, 64 is preparing to cross. The fate of the third line to a certain extent depends on the successful crossing of the great water. In 63, the third line speaks of "conquering the Devil's Country. Crossing the great water requires the task and responsibility of Preparing for the undertaking. Hexagram 64, line 4 again yang, also speaks of "conquering the Devil's country." Here however, after the transition, "Great realms are rewarded." Line 3, in 64, a yin line, says, before completion, attack brings misfortune. It furthers one to cross the great water."

Oh, and I love Cheescake.

And yes Val, if I ever quit talking about writing a book and actually do it, I will send you an autographed copy.

More on this later, including hopefully, how to interpret yin third lines.
