I asked the IC if it makes sense to continue a relationship and got 8.1.6>42.
Previously, months ago, at the same question, I had gotten 8 unchanging. Can someone help me understand the correct interpretation? Thank you

It is always a good idea to post what you make of the reading as that will be the correct one for you , as best as you can see it right now. It will not be wrong but it may not make complete sense, or give you a full answer but taking the first step yourself can be very beneficial to seeing into the situation.

I see 8.1.6 as saying that

8.1 Before getting deeper into this relationship you..
8.6 Decide against it.

And your commitment to this decision .. .
42. Increases over time.

Thanks to all, but I want to ask Rosada please explain me better... I don't understand English well!
What is not clear to me is that I asked twice if it makes sense to continue a relationship where she accepts my courtship but does not want to bind to me and in both cases I got 8, union, the first time inchanging, this time with two lines that seem to me of opposite meaning.
I have doubts whether to continue or not and I get 8 union. Union means union, if the advice was to stop I think the IC should tell me more, or not?

What translation are you using? Particularly what do you have for line 8.6?

I've always used the Wilhelm version.

8.1: Hold to him in truth and loyalty; this is without blame. Truth, like a full earthen bowl: thus in the end good fortune comes from without.

8.6: He finds no head for holding together. Misfortune.

I find myself between "good fortune" and "misfortune": so I do not understand what path to follow...
I was hoping for a clearer response!

I add that at the beginning of this relationship, asking for a general opinion I had gotten 19:
Approach has supreme success. Perseverance furthers. When the eighth month comes, there will be misfortune.

It can be easy to become confused by Hex 8. It talks of Seeking Union in some translations and Wilhelm Uses Holding Together (Union) as the hex name. In the Judgement he says
" Therefore let him who wishes to gather others about him ask himself whether he is equal to the undertaking, for anyone attempting the task without a real calling for it only makes confusion worse than if no union at all had taken place".
So Hex 8 can be about reforming the relationships that have grown up in your world, so this is as much about breaking and making bonds, both internal (thoughts and feelings) and external ( actions and connections).
Thanks my_key, so it's hard to understand whether to continue the relationship or quit....
But then can it be 42 the explanation? And what can increase?
I'm still confused....!

I think there is some confusion here as to the second hexagram.
8.1.6 changes to 42. Increase.

Anyway, part of the fun, or the frustration of divining with the I Ching is the deciphering what the answers mean and everyone is seeing the situation from their own perspective so it has to be expected that people will come up with different ideas. Here are mine...

I see 42. Increase as describing the over all situation - you are asking what would be the result if you Increase the attention you've been giving to this relationship.

I see 8.1.6 as describing what is going on in the situation.

Thus -
8.1 As this line describes a bowl that is empty, but a bowl does not need to be filled to be what it is. It is a perfect bowl already and does not need to "seek union" with anything more. As a response to your question, I see this line as noting that you are involved with a person who seems content with the relationship as it is.
8.6 This top line is a broken line so there is no "head" to the hexagram, thus no head for Union. Also the 6th line position describes how things are when the energy described in the hexagram has run it's course, so ultimately this woman has no interest in Increasing the relationship.

Now combining all these thoughts one might first think the I Ching is saying, "She's happy with things the way they are and is not interested in a closer Union," which is not a good support for 42. Increasing your attention.

However, 42. Increase is such a positive omen for success that one is naturally inclined to see if there is another way to interpret the seemingly poor support from 8.1.6. Perhaps the lines of 8 are advice for how YOU should be in order to make 42. Increase possible? Perhaps 8.1.6 is saying be happy with the way things are now and don't push for more, in time things will just naturally Increase. If that is what the I Ching is advising then it would seem that rather than telling you to give up, it's hopeless, you are being advised to hang in there.

So which is it?
Maybe it's neither. Maybe it's advising you to enjoy things the way they are without requiring more in order for this friendship to be worthwhile - and this attitude will Increase your understanding so that ultimately you realize for yourself without having to ask if it's worth it to you to continue.

Best wishes!

Indeed there is Rosada. Confusion is certainly coming into my house and I made a mistake. I'll delete my earlier post, with 40 os the resulting hexagram, so that it does not spread any other confusion.

Hi Mozzer
Sorry for adding to your confusion. Here is the changed text for you to consider

It can be easy to become confused by Hex 8. So if I got these readings these are the type of things that I'd be taking from them.
As you use Wilhelm I'll stick with that for the reply here.

Hex 8 talks of Seeking Union in some other translations and Wilhelm Uses Holding Together (Union) as the Hex name. Union is only a secondary hexagram name. In the Judgement he says:

"Therefore let him who wishes to gather others about him ask himself whether he is equal to the undertaking, for anyone attempting the task without a real calling for it only makes confusion worse than if no union at all had taken place".

So Hex 8 can be about reforming the relationships that have grown up in your world; to make them appropriate and clear, so the essense of the situation is as much about breaking as it is making bonds. Finding a place that is right for you - seeking union with things that make life truly joyful in as many ways as possible.

A few months ago you had Hex 8 as the advice offered. Being unchanging then it indicates that there is a period in which you can reflect and make your choice. Is this relationship going to make your life truely joyful: What are the pro's? What are the cons? And then knowing these what makes sense about continuing or not? Unchanging hexagrams do not indicate a period in which there is nothing to do.

Now a suitable amount of time has passed and you ask the question again and you get the response you had. The same over-arching call from Hex 8 but now inside a context of Increase (42) - Wilhelm declares that the right thing to do with Hex 42 shining down on you is to undertake something but that there is only a fixed period of time in which to do so. Hex 42 is seen by Wilhelm as an opportunity to develop oneself and ones personality.

You are also given some insights how to work along the steps of this advised change, as you have kind of used up the time where you could see into the situation without some outside assistance. so the Yi now says to you ( and read Wilhelms commentary on the lines again as that will help you become less confused):

8.1 - Hi Buddy - you've had a good shot at this, done the best you can and so nothing to reproach yourself about here. The root of your woes may be that you have hung onto what you held as the truth really well, but maybe you have been hanging onto the wrong thing here and for too long. I like the way you held onto your truth though and now this is a quality (loyalty) you have that is going to attract from outside your current thinking another idea / another truth for you to consider and give the same amount of loyalty to.

8.6 - Now listen carefully.........You haven't been approaching this situation in the right way. If you don't start out right it's not going to end right. All this hesitating you have been doing looks like you aren't really committed to this Union, it's like you don't really know what you want. If you leave it much longer to decide what you really really really want, (deep down really want), you could end up having things thrust upon you rather than finding the freedom and joy from having made your own choice. That in itself would be a misfortune for you.

Or it may not mean anything like this at all. All of this has come from reading deeply the Wilhelm text so the truest meaning for you in the divination may still be there. The important thing is to make a choice, a decision on the best information you have now it’ll be the right one for now and you can’t be wrong for now. Of course it may change in the future. That is the nature of the I Ching.

So, it's over to you and I'll ask you now "Does it make sense to continue with this relationship?" Look at the situation in a wide and deep way, decide on a way forward and base it on the deepest insights that you can , make the commitment to that choice, which could mean making changes in the people around you or the way you think, act or behave, as this will bring forth the happiest situations for you and perhaps connect you with aspects of yourself that you have not seen or allowed out to play before.

Good Luck.
