Hexagram 53, Gradual Progress

Key Questions

What is evolving here?
How can you be more patient?

Oracle

'Gradual progress. The woman marries.
Good fortune.
Constancy bears fruit.'

'Gradual progress' is the name of an ancient river: it shows how water flows gradually and soaks through. The long ceremonial preparations for a woman's marriage progressed just as surely and gradually towards the moment when the bride could come home to her husband's house. And the moving lines of this hexagram tell the story of the wild geese, who mate for life, as they fly ever higher on their way home.

Bonds develop gradually, organically, as raw emotional energies are channelled into a lasting relationship. We grow into life's possibilities, and evolve and come home into our relationships. This yields results – gradually, almost imperceptibly – provided you have the patience to stay loyal to the destination as the journey unfolds.

Image

'On the mountain is a tree: Gradual Progress.
A noble one abides in virtuous character and improves the ordinary.'

Sequence

Gradual Progress follows from Hexagram 52, Stilling:
'Things cannot end with standstill, and so Gradual Progress follows. Gradual Progress means advancing.'

Pair

Gradual Progress is paired and contrasted with Hexagram 54, the Marrying Maiden:
'Gradual Progress: the marrying woman waits for the man to act.'
'Marrying Maiden: completion for the woman.'

Changing Lines

Line 3
'Wild geese gradually progress to the high plateau.
The husband marches out and does not return,
The wife is pregnant, but does not raise the child.
Pitfall. Fruitful to resist outlaws.'

Hexagram 20, Seeing

Key Questions

When you stop searching, what comes into view?
If you had no preconceptions, what might you see?

Oracle

'Seeing. Washing hands, and not making the offering.
There is truth and confidence like a presence.'

To see is not to focus on some specific thing, but to witness everything that comes into view, with open awareness like a heron seeing a lake.

In the ritual, the everyday world is washed off – and then there is a breathless pause. It is not yet time to make the offering, but only to watch for what comes, 'like a presence', into the space. In ordinary life, also, you can pause before falling automatically into the next step of the process, and see what is present before you respond. Into this space between actions comes truth, its presence as unmistakable as a great person's aura. You need only watch for it as it comes.

Image

'Wind moves over the earth: Seeing.
The ancient kings studied the regions,
Saw the people,
And established their teachings.'

Sequence

Seeing follows from Hexagram 19, Nearing:
'What is great allows Seeing.'
