Sameness and the EQV (equivalence operator)

An operational distinction in the brain is that of the difference/part (XOR) and sameness (EQV). As XOR covers differences and favours an asymmetric bias so EQV covers sameness and a symmetric bias.

Just as we can use XOR to extract analogies about parts of hexagram, so we can use EQV to map what two hexagrams have in common, their sameness. This will be very 'vague' in that we are taking a step back from the unique expressions to focus on similarities and so extract an analogy to another hexagram to describe such.

The EQV operator works down the columns as:

hex A line : 1 0 1 0
hex B line : 1 0 0 1
hex C line : 1 1 0 0 (result)

Thus, if we try to find an analogy describing the sameness across 23 and 24 we have:

011110 - what they share is a degree of excess in expression, be it the intense devotion of the disciple or the intense devotion of the priest, both cover a sense of going the extra distance, doing the extra work in (a) the return to the 'one' belief (24) from the outside (come back to) or (b) the return to the 'one' belief through pruning the current expressions of such to return to the core, the basics (23) (and so working on the inside).

03 EQV 04

001100 - this is a focus on or more so on dealing with a 'hard' interior, soft exterior and a general sense of yielding, softening becoming hardened. etc. 62 reads as "with/from self-restraint comes awareness" Thus education 'hardens' the youth (04) and achieves social 'empathy' as does the youth have to 'break through' the soft shell to develop (sprout - 03)
Overall 62 covers issues of social loyalties and the imposition of, maintaining of, traditions to keep things 'together'.

The difficulties of 03 sprouting map to the difficulties of a youth and acquiring a teacher. - overall there is a sense of 'guidance', issues of control, regulation for the 'new' etc covered in the exaggerations of traditional to promote group survival - to use some self-restraint in development.

29 EQV 30

This is the 'standard' response for dealing with opposites (we get the same for 01 EQV 02) where we can interpret 0 as 'darkness', there is NO sameness or we can interpret '0' as potentials, no actuals. That said, hex 02 also covers the focus on devotion to another/others. Thus the intense focus on protection of others in 29 is reflected in the intense focus on 'likemindedness' and exploitations in 30. Overall there is an link with 'others'.

For the 01/02 pairing so the devotion to another in 02 is mapped to that other being self in 01.

05 EQV 06

010010 - the shared issue here is on containment/control. As the 05 waits for a opportunity, and so must show intentional restraint, so in 06 we have the containment of a legal situation, the not giving way no advancing of compromise (06).

07 EQV 08

101101 - the shared issue here is on guidance/direction-setting(ideology) and issues of likemindedness - be it the milaristic form of uniforming (07) or that of an attracting leader (08, the king/court)

09 EQV 10

110011 - the shared issue is on hard exterior, soft interior, yielding, softening core where we have to put up an appearance of 'rigidity' or 'purpose' to succeed, be noticed... or more so both of these have an 'inner focus', or 'awareness' that is guiding them.

13 EQV 14

101101 - for both the shared issue is on guidance/direction-setting (an ideology). As such there is a link with 07/08 pairing (but then that pair is the structural opposite of this so such a relationship is expected, recall that EQV is about samenesses and so will (a) repeat analogies and (b) focus on the symmetric)

60 EQV 51

101001 - the shared issue is on 22 - facading, cover up, beautify.

The limitiations of 60 come as standardisations, all look the 'same', a facade as such. For 51 the focus is on enlightenment, awareness, the new, sudden that includes the presentation of a some new perspective and so its 'dressing up' to impress, attract.

The EQV operator appears to map a distinct pair of hexagrams to a 'vague' representation of their sameness in the form of an analogy to the under-exaggerated characteristics of some other hexagram thus we can map what X has in common with Y, if anything.

In XOR we use 27-ness to map infrastructure so the 27-ness of 01 is 28.
In EQV we use 27 with 01 to map out their shared qualities as individual hexagrams and so:

100001 - the common theme is on establishing infrastructure, a beginning, and included in that is a skill to differentiate 'good' from 'bad'. In 01 there is a focus on being competitive and perpetual training to 'refine' one's skills, one's qualities, and with that set down personal identity. For 27 the focus is on quality control as we 'fill in' the infrastructure.

In our brains, the LACK of precision with sameness allows for class members to replace others - e.g. 07/08 sameness is shared with their structural opposites of 13/14. As such, the samenesses are interchangable and this can elicit 'false reasoning' if one is not careful - whereas in the realm of the asymmetric such reasoning is not possible.

Hi Chris

Glad you start to publish about this other operator. There are very interesting issues applying it.

From another perspective (not related to the way brain works and the entire IC+ perspective), this operator applied to Yijing had been published years ago by Miranda (only in spanish version, as long as I know)

But I find more useful the way you use it (to expand the analogies for derivate meaning) than he uses it (to expand predictive interpretations).

Best wishes
