I am a little astonished right now. I have a teaching job that was originally supposed to last through the Spring semester, but I just logged on to the school's website and it appears that one of my classes has been given away to another instructor. The weird part is that the classes were supposed to be "continuing" classes, in that the students usually have the same instructor for an entire year.

My boss never talked to me about this being only a one semester job. I only signed a contract for one semester, but I am really bewildered. When I said good-bye to all of the students, of course I said have a good holiday and see you next semester!

I am really confused and asked the iching: "Why did they give my second semester class away?"

It is not unusual as a part time professor for this kind of thing to happen, but under the circumstances of it being a continuing class and the fact that I was asked to teach for the entire year. I am very confused!

I would appreciate any insights. I just feel shocked, and although I emailed my boss am guessing I won't get a response for awhile since it is so close to the holidays.

Thanks in advance for your help in interpreting!

I think this is just a misunderstanding (hex 38), maybe even a computer/operator error.

Line 3: Let yourself relax and forget about the work in the evening (for the holidays)
Line 5: See the great man - your boss.

You say that you've signed a contract only for one semester, maybe they can't officially give you a class to teach without a contract, and maybe the boss forgot to tell the database operator this fact.

Be calm, I think the matter will be resolved after you talk to your boss.

Thank you ashteroid! I hope that you are right, and it is quite possible. It wouldn't be the first time they have made an error as to which classes I am teaching. Wow, what a big error though to actually have my class listed in the catalogue with another instructor's name :+/

I really hope that is the case though. As I said, this is not really an unusual occurance with adjunct (part time) teaching, but my boss was so sincere and complimentary when he first asked me to take the courses that I would be very confused/surprised if he gave my class away without even talking to me about it! And for that matter it would be extra weird I think if he went through the trouble of asking someone else to teach it without informing me.

Anyway, thank you for your response! Yes! I will try to relax for the holidays now!! I am sure that is what my boss is doing haha :+)

Well, just to update. Yup. They gave my class away. One of my bosses just emailed. Apparently they needed to give an instructor with seniority another class, so they chose mine. Ugh. Sort of frustrating, but honestly I wanted to focus on more of my own work next semester so not as major of a bummer. Plus, I don't have to teach this one student who was really giving me a hard time anymore. Still wish they would have told me before I found out online :+/

Can you believe there are bosses like that? Not even a call, it's like breaking up by text. :eek:uch:

So the superior man in lines 3 and 5 - was 'an instructor with seniority', oh.
Line 3, Wilhelm: A sphere of influence opens up for the great man. His fame begins to spread.
The masses flock to him.

Line 5: Here the great man has attained the sphere of the heavenly beings.

I'm glad that you see a positive moments in that, stay optimistic and good luck next year :)

Thanks Ash. I will still send an email expressing my frustration with the situation. The fact is that all of the students thought they were continuing with me, so I can't imagine they will be happy. Seems like an oversight on their part that I am paying for. Another thing I plan on pointing out to them is that while I may not have the seniority that the professor in question has, I should technically have some seniority over some of the other new hires (of which there are many) since I worked for the department for a year as a teaching assistant before being given classes of my own. IMO one of those people show have lost their class, not me. Anyway, we will see how it plays out. Yes, very surprised that I did not even receive notice about it. Kind of a lame move if you ask me. But the thing about teaching at this school is that it is very prestigious, but pays very little so might be a blessing in disguise. Thanks again for your insights!

Best,
Jen
