We are considering selling our property to our son with the intention of staying here a bit longer but eventually moving into a senior village in town which would give us a more active social life and possibilities of travel Trying to avoid the dreaded "Yes or No?" format, I simply asked the I Ching for a comment on our idea to sell and received 50.2 > 56.

Our reasons for considering selling are that while this land is a glorious mountain hideaway, it's 10 miles out of town with no neighbors and in winter it's as cold as the tomb. I see 50.2 as refering to what a wonderful piece of property this is and 56 The Wanderer could be saying we simply feel it's time to move on, travel etc. This way of interpreting the hexagrams seems to be saying selling would be a positive, a natural evolution. However, I can also read these hexagrams as meaning we have something wonderful here and to beware of letting anything lure us away.

Any ideas?

I could see this two ways, also. At first glance is the beautiful synchronicity about your desire for traveling (56) and the valuable resources (and sale of same) which make that possible.

the second way I see it is with a time factor involved....the 50.2 is the valuable resources in your possession now, and the 56 representing a transition: decisions about when, how, ( even how much?!), and if, to sell, these are still in flux, not something you are certain about right now. in this case, the important consideration is that you do have something valuable, you "got the goods" so to speak and you want to consider it from this vantage point. (if it wasn't family you were contemplating selling it to, I would even put more emphasis on the "best deal," but I know with family, that may not be your main consideration):bows:

of course there is that element in 50.2 which implies not letting anyone/anything else influence your decision....that's the only thing I'd beware of. With 50.2, it seems like you have the ball in your court, and you have the time to explore the options, weigh out your values...all those qualities of 56.

so I guess, since that is what you were doing ( exploring an option) when you asked the I ching this, that I would ask more pointed questions about timing, and so on.

sounds like a good place to be, Rosada, not just the home but having the home and the luxury of contemplating fun decisions about the future from a position of strength:)

I simply asked the I Ching for a comment on our idea to sell and received 50.2 > 56.
50's about transformation, especially inner transformation, and in this case the transformation in question seems to be the transformation of your life if you sell. 50.2 is an interesting line, considering your question. You're asking about your plan to sell, and the Yi's talking about how there's real substance in this transformative idea, and also how forces inimical to you can't do a thing about it or harm you, and how all of this is fortunate. Hm? Forces inimical to you? Enemies? I have no idea what that's about, but the Yi's saying 'fear not'. The 56 connection suggests that travel could easily be a part of the new situation.

Hex 50.2 > 56.

Selling to your son would be an excellent idea, as it hints that there could well be tax savings if done this way and so it suggests that a need for change in your living arrangements is coming soon.

Thank you all so much for these thoughtful responses!

I hadn't zeroed in on 50 being about transformation, Dobro, thank you. I think the "envious comrades" could refer to my various family members who are not so happy in their lives. Our time up here alone in nature has transformed me into realizing I need not feel guilty for being happy in mine. Maybe the I Ching is pointing out to me that I must not lose this lesson when we Travel on.

Willowfox, thank you for your encouragement. I think the tax advantage you are seeing is
that we would like to move into a senior housing complex. To qualify one cannot own property, so selling to our son would be away of meeting that requirement while still keeping the land in the family.

Listener, I hadn't thought of 56. The Wanderer as meaning Transition in general. That is very reassuring. I was seeing it as meaning we'd be homeless with no clear sense of where we were headed.

Now a follow up question. If we do sell to our son, the arrangement would be that while the property would be in his name, we would continue to live here until we decided to move. We could stay here forever if we wanted to, but my husband would really like to move into town before next winter.
So I asked, "If we sell to my son, when would we move to a new home?" (I added the qualification on "to a new home" to underscore I am not talking about just leaving for the winter. The I Ching can be so tricky!) I received 64.2.6 > 16.

64.2
He brakes his wheels.
Perseverance brings good fortune.

I see this as meaning preparing for the transition, but maybe it not happening right away. Or does this counsel not moving forward with the sale at this time, but continuing to consider eventually selling?

64.6
There is drinking of wine
In genuine confidence. No blame.
But if one wets his head,
He loses it, in truth.

Now this seems to encourage moving forward with our plan, and indeed, a sense that we should not just talk about it but not put off too long actually doing it.

16. Enthusiasm
The ancient kings made music
In order to honor merit,
And offered it with splendor
To the Supreme Deity,
Inviting their ancestors to be present.

I have thought we should hang on to this property because of it's potential as a place for family reunions and also it's nice to think we have a place people could come to if life in the city, global warming, 2010, all become too much. 16 seems to describe using this land for such a purpose. So perhaps we need to have a grand family reunion up here before moving?

Your comments?

"If we sell to my son, when would we move to a new home?" Hex 64.2.6 > 16.

Line 64.2 This answer is assuming that you have now sold the house and are waiting to move, so the line is telling you to hold your horses for a while longer.

Line 64.6 This says the time is nigh to make that move, but just becareful and check all the details, leave nothing to chance.

Hex 16 speaks for itself, get some people to help you move your things and just go for it.

When? Hex 64 indicates the beginning of November and Hex 16 indicates the beginning of March next year, so, do they apply?

Thank you Willowfox.Yes, these dates would make sense. November would mark the beginning of snow season and if we don't actually move into the senior complex then we could vary well be going Somewhere to survive the winter and then officially move in March. Well, whether or not those dates actually prove to be the exact ones I think the I Ching is advising to shoot for them, to prepare for moving then.
We shall see..

Rosada, I had a dream that you sold your property for 1.5 million dollars. I don't remember too much else of the dream but it was a very happy one, somebody was bouncing around like the old Bounce icon Hilary used to have:)

Wow, thanks Listener! The actual price is $150,000 but what's a zero between friends? Anyway, I like the idea that the dream seemed to show us happy with the arrangement. Could also be suggesting that if we don't go through with the sale we have something of value here to hang on to.:)
