hi everyone, i am new here and new to the i ching and could use some help interpreting hexagram 59.

i am seeking guidance on whether to sell my house this year, a decision i feel very conflicted about.

i bought and rebuilt it a few years ago and put a lot of myself into the project. it is beautiful in many ways but also causes me a lot of stress. the house is so vulnerable to climate change, requires a lot of maintenance that i find overwhelming, and the priorities of my life have shifted such that i only want to spend a few months a year here. the other months of the year, i spend time with elderly friend and family and rent out the house, which sometimes goes well and is a big headache at other times.

this past year was especially stressful because of a combination of hurricane damage and terrible tenants, so i resolved to sell the house, but now that i am here i am having second thoughts. i don’t want to make a hasty decision out of fear, but neither do i want to have another year as stressful as this last one.

the reading is full of references to flooding and instability. i feel unable currently to access a confidence in the flow beneath phenomena and unable to move forward. any guidance will be appreciated.

Hi

When I get 59 Unchanging I usually have the impression it is telling me to disperse that idea.
To dissolve it.

So I would not sell it.

Also, once it is sold it is sold. You don't want to have regrets.
Unless you sell it for a huge amount of money, which is always a good way to have less regrets ;)

I have been renovating a house for two years and still having problems, I can sympathize.

There is a thread here, one of the series of uc threads, where people talk about their own experiences of 59uc which may help if you haven't seen it

So much of what you have said is redolent of 59, Dispersion. There is nothing solid any more, water evaporates, changes form, flies off with the wind. You could take it almost literally with the hurricanes dispersing things. This stands out as 59, the core of your query is so 59

You poured yourself in, you poured energy in but it's shifted now, your own energy is going elsewhere just like the house is in a way shifting form through climate change and so on.

This isn't a time to hold onto things. Lets get the Oracle and the Image which are especially important here

Oracle
'Dispersing, creating success.
The king assumes his temple.
Harvest in crossing the great river,
Harvest in constancy.'

Image
'Wind moves above the stream. Dispersing.
The ancient kings made offerings to the Highest to establish the temples.'

Read the Oracle and it seems a very direct answer to me. It says dispersing creates success. There is harvest in crossing the river. I feel this is a 'yes' to your question, yes sell your house, it is time to disperse things, you are already and you are in a state of dispersal. This is an emphatic answer.

The Image gives advice on how to be with this because obviously it's scary when everything seems to be shift shaping. You offer it up to your highest ideals, you pray, you worship, you connect with the divine and take the scariness there. There are new temples to establish so though things seems to be washing away down river now this is so they can come together in another solid and enduring form elsewhere. Your energy, the energy you put into the house hasn't been wasted it's just going into circulation now.

That is just my take on your reading

Hex 59 Dispersion carries a theme of breaking through or breaking up illusions that have taken a hold in your life.

Imagine you are sailing through a thick, murky 'pea-soup' fog, swirling all around you. Some time ago, you set off on one journey and now are lost in the fog, not sure where you are or in what direction you are going. Lost. Adrift at sea.

A fresh breeze begins to gently blow and slowly it becomes stronger and stronger, buffeting you around a bit, perhaps even knocking you to the floor: taking all the wind out of your sails. As it continues to blow it slowly clears the fog from around you. You begin to recognise your surroundings and some familiar land marks; you feel much better in yourself your fears of not knowing where you are or in which direction you are heading no longer hang like dark clouds over you.

You may realise that you need to complete a task or two to get your ship fully seaworthy again. Perhaps you throw a rusty old anchor that has been holding you back over the side. And now most importantly, now, having seen the new light of day you can set course on a bearing.

... or it might be nothing like that at all.

Good Luck

thank you for this thoughtful reply and for pointing me to the thread, which i hadn’t seen.

i am still sitting with the reading and the decision.
in one way i see it as you seem to have seen it, as a pretty clear and direct answer to free the energy in the house by selling it.

but i keep coming back to the key questions: where and how can you be less rigid, and what were the walls in this situation and what can you see as they dissolve away?

for the moment, it feels like the walls in the situation are my own fears and desire for less change.

as the walls dissolve away, i see that change isn’t something i can wall myself off from. whether i sell the house or keep it, life will keep being flowing, unpredictable, sometimes scary, and vital.

thank you for your help.

thanks for your reply. yes, they say in renovation the last 10% takes as long as the first 90% 😉

Just to add to the confusion...
Sometimes an unchanging hexagram can be a picture of the situation along with the idea that nothing changes - thus you are thinking of Dispersing - selling - but you don't actually do anything.
59. Dispersing also can be emphasizing that you are wanting to release old attachments so while you are considering selling you might start by getting rid of things you know for sure you have out grown. You may find that when you clear out some old clutter you see your home in a whole new light. Like you realize don't have to move, you just had to get rid of the hideous china cabinet.

Yes, this feels like where I am in a physical sense, letting go of some objects, tending to others, seeing how it all feels and trying to relax in the not-knowing until the knowing arrives.

Internally, I have the sense that one of my greatest attachments is to the notion that if I just do the research and reason it all out, I will make the “right” decision and be insulated from the effects of a “wrong” decision. Letting go of that limiting view would be more profitable than any real estate transaction 😀.

59 is in one sense "dispersing your wealth" (the king opens the treasury). Sounds like a yes to me.

(I will include this in the unchanging thread for comments, but feel it's relatable to @tupelo2022 question)

Interesting thread. Sharing my current experience as I feel it relates. I asked Yi: What can I expect from SBA from this point on?

I recently requested an increase of funds on an original loan I received. The process has been long. This week I've had more movement on the process than I've had in six months. Today, I was asked to provide bank information (voided check) but my loan portal stills says application processing as opposed to "approved". Of course, I'm hoping it means things are headed in that direction. Anyways, Yi answered 59 unchanging.

Immediately, what came to mine is "dispersing" funds. Disperment is the language the organization uses to describe...dispersing funds! It would be a literal translation, and one I'm happy to claim. I will be sure to share the results when I find out.

Approaching @tup question – It seems you want to capitalize on your property by selling and Yi is advising to disperse / spread out to "open the treasury" as @marybluesky suggested. Touching on the idea of transforming forms as @Trojina mentioned . The boundaries dissolve (walls of your home) aka liquidating your assets. Similar to the idea of water turning into vapor to spread out and become a cloud.

Hope that makes sense. I'm still green at this.

My two cents.

Good luck to you. 🙏🏽
