Hi to all,

About 2 months ago I moved to my now new home and since then, most nights I sleep all night - probably not unusual to some but for as long as I can remember I have suffered from insomnia and awoke between 1 - 4 times a night. This is the first time I can ever recall sleeping so well.

Now however I am experience Sleep Paralysis - this means that I wake up mentally but cannot move at all physically and have to will myself back to sleep so I can wake up properly. I have experienced this now and then during my life but now I am experiencing it on a regular basis. It doesn't scare me particularly and there are no incubus or other demons as some suggest is part of this condition, it is just seriously annoying.

Why am I experiencing Sleep Paralysis - Hex 59.5.6>7

So my understanding is that I am dispersing the boundaries I have built up over the years, due to my life experiences, to join with another.

How can I let go of my boundaries in a different way Hex 16.4>2

Hex 16 I believe is singing or music and lately I have been craving to play the guitar or piano, both of which I can play, but do not have the instrument - better work out how I can get one or the other.

thks for your insight - Liss

Why am I experiencing Sleep Paralysis?
59.5.6 > 7

If you use trance, maybe that is a factor. I understand the dissolution to be the separation of one's spirit and ghost (yang and yin), and your changing lines are the two upper lines, the position of the mental. I think you have been under stress recently, and that may have altered your sleep patterns. Are you able to avoid sleeping on your back? Sleeping on the back is said to favor sleep paralysis. I have a going-to-bed routine that has improved my sleep.

Thanks pocossin - no I don't use trance but yes stress in regards to wanting to change my way of thinking, mental and emotional. I mostly sleep on my back but it happened again last night and when I awoke I was on my side and it felt like someone was holding me, not letting me move but I forced my way through that mentally to able me to move my body.
I'm also in the process of removing physical(people) obstacles that are trying to stop me moving forward. Hopefully today will see much improvement in that area.
thanks for taking the time to look at this for me. - Liss

hi Liss

(this feels kind of ironic since I'm writing on a bout of insomnia and having just received 59 and lines - altho for a different issue- but anyways . .)

As I read this, your answer first seems to say that there's dissolution of your 'ranks' (your sleep routines, daily patterns etc). If I remember correctly, 59.5 speaks of a king dispersing his house, issuing cries then moves away from it all, which sounds too much like what you said yourself.
Thinking a bit more about it what comes up for me is the difference in quality your two hexagrams have: the fluid 'melting away' of boundaries in 59 and the 'water (danger, habitual rhythms, heartbeat) inside'. One could read it as 'resistance to change', or like old patterns clinging but I feel there's wisdom in resistance too - maybe your self is trying to establish some of its old sense of feeling safe/self-contained, or being in control and finds its easiest outlet in your sleep? Here's an idea: what if you didn't 'will' yourself back to sleep but tried to open a 'discussion' with the situation? (this probably sounds whacko but I can't find a better way to say it at this time of night ). In any case it's like an inner part of you shouts out to you to 'stop' or, well, pause, take some time, slow down

16.4 for me is simply knowing which part goes to which slot (finding the right responses). If your inner general is 'annoyed' by all the changes, why not try to find something to give him/her to assuage the stress? Some task, or new routine or ritual that will 'frame' your new life in ways that you can control - think of it as giving a kid a toy they can enjoy or work with, hitting the right note, so to speak

- just some thoughts, hope they help!

What??? the whole sleep paralysis thing is totally whacko so anything you say in reference to it seems mild (to me anyway)!!

Good idea - everything is going a bit fast I have to admit in terms of makings some much needed changes and I guess on some levels I can't keep up and that may be the resistance happening.

I realised only a couple of hours ago I really do need an outlet to balance it out.

Thanks for your thoughts and stuff. Good luck with that demon insomnia - Liss

thanks! I love that image too - I think it's fun and pretty serious at the same time

As to my insomnia, strangely enough, I never saw it as a problem - I love how it allows me to experience the world at its most 'secret' moments AND it has been very creative. There are times when it goes against my need for a full-time 7-8 hours sleep (like today for example ) but then I just have to be a bit patient and choose to play 'adult' with it . . in general we are at peace though :)

sleep paralysis

While awake during the day practice moving the tip of a little finger, then the whole finger, then the hand, then the arm, and progress to the whole body. After a few days this practice will integrate into your dream life and break the old pattern of sleep paralysis. This latter often accompanies a type of nightmare known as 'night terrors' which can persist for a long time but is quite easily stopped by the exercise described.

Thanks Peter - I didn't experience it last night or today first time for a while and I practised yoga nidra today as well. Also I removed the person (obstacle) that was stopping me from living my own truth - a friend of over 40 years. - Liss
