SORE REFLECTION

my search for truth
seems to have come to a halt

the cause :- a self-inflicted wound
caked with salt

in the mirror were a pair of eyes

hoodwinked, fooled, and befuddled …
they, too, tell lies !

~ & ~

For a long time I did not quite know what to make of this Yi-King's response to my query concerning "Truth", and so more or less have resigned myself to the feeling that "what I was seeking is out of my reach". That resignation has brought some peace to my mind ... enough for me to carry on with "life" ...

A recent casual conversation with a good friend has inadvertently revived the "truth" bug in me . He mentioned the philosophical discussions between David Bohm and Krishnamurti on the elusive subject of "Truth" and "Reality" . My friend seems to have come to a conclusion that, according to Bohm and Krishnamurti , it is practically impossible for the human consciousness to grasp or describe "truth" ! (“The description is not the described ..." , to quote Krishnamurti)

Reflecting on it now, it gradually dawns on me that all my life , by believing and trusting my eyes and my senses, I had been steadily dragged down and drowned deeper and deeper into falsehood . When I woke up and realised what was happening, and let go of my faulty beliefs, and sank no further, I have effectively begun the first step in "coming up", in "approaching" what I was longing for . Perhaps that was what the hexagram 19 alludes to .

What is the next step then, after stopping ?

How can one get to something that cannot be described or conceptualised ?
( As Krishnamurti said: "The word is not the thing ...") .

So more "biting and gnawing" questions remain ...

I've turned to the Yi again, trying a different tact:

Please help me explore the word "truth"

Hexagram 04 (Immature folly) with 4 moving lines, changing into hexagram 51 (Double Thunder)

This time the Yi has been more forthcoming, in fact, rather blunt in its response . I was simply being a fool to waste my time with semantics, with words . That won't get me anywhere either ! :)

A very quick (sorry) look at your first one... Nearing and Biting Through seems like a pretty decent way to explore truth to me, I think? Approach as closely as possible, pay attention, chew and gnaw on things with great energy...

But as you said, absolute truth surely is out of our reach. It probably should be.

Thank you for your input, Liselle .
By mentioning "absolute truth", you've reminded me that even truth itself has many shades .

No matter how hard we bite, chew or gnaw, as human we probably can only try to approach, but never really get to "truth" . Makes me think the word "truth" actually functions like a "lie" , since it conjures up a sort of illusion, a mirage that entices us, keeps us going, crawling desperately towards it in the desert of life .

Do we have to go that far, though? Can something less than 100% still be helpful?

I guess it can be helpful if one somehow manages to keep in mind that a large percentage (90+ ?) of what one believes as truth could very well turn out to be untrue .

The screenshots shown above were output from a computer program called E-KING . It's my own home-crafted software, which can be freely downloaded from the links below:

for Windows-based computers:
EKING-en-v4.1-win.zip

for Apple OSX-based computers:
EKING-en-v4.1-mac.zip (OSX Catalina 64 bit)

Hi d_squared, Before looking closer at your programme I would like to know which version ie Whom's translation of The Book of Changes You have used?

My first E-KING program was written some 25 years ago, the text for which was a distillation of the Wilhelm's translation, the only source of info available to me at the time . More than a decade later, increasing online access to international books on Yi-King has enabled me to produce a Vietnamese version of my E-KING software . Language-wise, Vietnamese (my mother tongue) is quite close to Chinese, a fortuitous fact which has boosted my understanding of the Yi-King text considerably . Over time, I have made good use of this cumulatively acquired insight to refine the text in my English E-KING program as well, based on my personal comprehension and interpretation .

Today I started to install your program but were warned, first from Windows Defender and then from my antivirus program, Norton Security, so I choose to stop the installation.
Have You checked your program in depth recently? If not, maybe You should, because I saw in Norton File Info about your program that it got very few downloads, which isn't that strange if people who want to download your program are warned...
For your information.

D-squared, would you like people to take a look at your reading and give you some ideas and feedback about it? If so, I could move it to the Shared Readings forum.

If you'd rather keep it here, that's fine, too. Let me know.

(Also - it might be nice to make the screen clip images smaller, especially for the benefit of people reading on smaller screens. I have a 14" laptop, and the screen clips are too tall even for that. It's very easy to shrink them, right here in the thread:
  • Click "Edit" below the posts with images
  • Use your mouse to grab the small squares at the corners of the image
  • Drag inwards to change the size. )

Dear Yi King,
How to go on in an insane and deluded world ?

d-squared, make note of Liselle's suggestion to move your reading to 'shared readings' and Surnev's concerns about security.

When I look the screen shots you've shared, I see what I take to be your comments, but I don't see the actual text from the Yi. Are there perhaps other screen-shots and aspects to your app that we're not seeing here?

For example, for Hex. 52, Wilhelm's translation (in English) of the judgement is:

STILL. Keeping his back still so that he no longer feels his body.
He goes into his courtyard, and does not see his people.
No blame.

Your text is different; I don't necessarily see that Wilhelm or the Yi are talking about an absence of "self-concern", nor a mind that's "alert and detached" nor a "readiness for any demanding activity". These all seem to be your words, yes?

I am not implying that you or your app are 'wrong' - only that what you are giving us are your words and interpretations, and not the words of the Yi - nor any of the many historic (or more recent) commentaries many others have made.

D.

@ surnevs
Thank you for the feedback . This morning I've downloaded the Windows zip file from the link given above myself , and re-checked it with Windows Defender (my desktop has Win 10) . It reported no threat, no problem. I don't have Norton Security on my computer, so cannot offer any clue regarding the Norton's result. This program has been written mainly for my own use, with no ulterior motive. As far as I know, it may still contain clumsy software bugs due to its author's deficiencies, but definitely no intentional viruses or trojans .

@ Liselle
Many thanks for your advice . I've reduced the size of the images in my recent post, as suggested . With the older posts of mine, there is no longer the option to edit them . Please move this thread to the Shared Readings section if you feel that's a more appropriate place for it . I don't visit Clarity often enough to remember the various forums, and "Open Space" seems to remain at the front of my mind .

@ dfreed
With my program, there is no other hidden commentary text apart from what is shown on the screen for each hexagram . As already described in a previous post, the text for my E-KING program has evolved over many years, drawing initially from Wilhelm's book, and later gradually shaped and crafted according to my personal understanding . The original Chinese Yi-text is very terse and cryptic, can be read and interpreted in different ways, and often presents to the reader simply more riddles and impasse . With E-KING, instead of just faithfully translating word for word, I've attempted to make the hexagram commentary more palatable, more conducive, to facilitate further thinking . It's a contribution from a personal perspective, (a constructive reaction from a long-suffering receiving end :) ) .

d_squared: With ones own computer there is nothing to see. I know that from my homepage which I started around twenty years ago. Every time I secure-tested it everything was OK. On my own Pc.
back then it was: http://etc. But at a certain time, it changed worldwide to: https:// etc. and for some reason, I did not react to that. On my home-Pc everything was OK.
One day some years ago when I was at the Library and got some time for it, I checked my homepage on one of their Pc's and were not allowed to enter my Homepage due to SECURITY-RISC !
I contacted my Web-hotel (I'm like You "my own Web-master" / say programmer in this connection)
and they managed to change my web address to: https://
And now I'm allowed to visit my Homepage on other Pc's than my own.

In short: Try to download Your program from another Pc than yours, and if that'll be OK maybe my Norton or WinDefender is a bit too critical (or maybe some war is going on in Cyberspace  )

Hi surnevs,
Thank you for your insight regarding the security issue . I have tried to download the E-KING zip file in question from the MS OneDrive cloud repository using two different notebook computers , with the following results:

1) An older HP notebook still running Windows 7 Professional, with BitDefender antivirus software installed . The E-KING zip file was downloaded using OPERA browser . The downloaded zip file was scanned with BitDefender . No threat, no malware was detected . The EKING.EXE file was extracted from the zip, and ran without any problem , no further warning or challenge from the OS .

2) A brand new Lenovo notebook (my wife's), running Windows 10, with AVG antivirus software installed . The E-KING zip file was downloaded using Microsoft EDGE browser . The downloaded zip file was scanned with AVG antivirus . No threat, no malware was detected . From this point on, however, there were more hurdles to overcome: After the EXE file was extracted from the zip, any attempt to run it would be blocked by a warning from the Windows-10 OS (ie. Microsoft Defender) stating that the program is from an unknown publisher. The only way to proceed is to click on the MORE INFO option as presented by the OS warning message . Subsequently a new option will appear, a button labeled as RUN ANYWAY . Clicking this button will launch the E-KING program in the Windows 10 environment . The AVG antivirus may kick in at this point and confine the program to run in a sandbox while performing more checks before finally releasing it .

I'm not a professional PC software developer. Writing computer programs is just a hobby of mine, it keeps my brain active, and lets me get the most out of the machines in my possession. Without throwing a lot of resource, time, and effort into the process of software registration and certification as required by Microsoft, there is not much else that I can do to make the sharing of my E-KING program easier at this stage .

Thank You ! This was exactly also what happened to me: ".... After the EXE file was extracted from the zip, any attempt to run it would be blocked by a warning from the Windows-10 OS (ie. Microsoft Defender) stating that the program is from an unknown publisher. The only way to proceed is to click on the MORE INFO option as presented by the OS warning message . - and I've also had programmes made in Visual Studio on my homepage which I developed years ago and with the same blocking.

I now will download your program and say to You: I appreciate creative people like You and hope some more will find their way into this crazy World (y) at least to make it run forward - not backward (n)

Okay, thanks. Your program is as we both describe: it contains your ideas about the YI, but it does not include the text of the Yi, nor any of the traditional commentaries.

That's fine; I just wanted to be clear exactly what it is and what it does and does not include.
