I was reading hexagram 28. "Excess" or "Overstepping" and wondering how something on the verge of collapsing could be described by such powerful images of a man and woman falling in love (the rejuvenating willow trees). At that moment I started hearing the song, "Stay Just A little Bit Longer". The lyrics seemed to be expanding on the meaning of 28., as if saying 28 is the experience where when you know you ought to leave, it's getting late and you gotta get back home but now this person is starting to come on to you, trying to get you to stay just a little bit longer, it could be the collapse of your reputation but it could be the start of a whole new life!

Hi Moss,

I'm working on putting together a story that will link together the hexagrams in sequence. To give you a bit of an example, I'll go back to 25. Innocence and read it as describing some poor Innocent who after making one mistake (ties his cow up where it can be easily stolen) and being comforted and supported by the group (lines 25.4 and 25.5) makes the same mistake again! He's learned nothing! So now what was understandable forgivable behavior in line one - "Innocent behavior brings good fortune" - has become totally frustrating behavior by line six, "Innocent behavior brings misfortune."
Then it's time to stop, go back to school and learn from the experiences of others as described by hexagram 26, The Taming Power of The Great. When one has completed their course of study and sees how the stars align so as to avoid further robberies and disasters there is great rejoicing, we're on Heaven's Highway!
But then...on to hexagram 27. Nourishment where the Innocent soul must now put into practice all he's learned. No longer spoon fed by the elders as to what to do and when (27.1 Leaves school, loses magic tortoise), the noble one has to figure out how to balance the practical with the spiritual and learns to focus like a tiger on what is right before him that needs to be done. This works out very nicely, in fact, ultimately he learns to take good care of himself and by the end of the hexagram he's thinking..."Hm...maybe I'm able to provide pretty well for myself, maybe I could take on a little teensy bit more responsibility. A wife perhaps?" And thus, even though he knows it's dangerous, he crosses the great water to the land where all the beautiful girls hang out and hexagram 28...
"Don't do it! It's too much! You can barely take care of yourself," his friends cry. But the superior man, even if he stands alone is unconcerned - he's gonna try even if it kills him!
Line 28.1 Just as he swears he's not taking on too much, he tells the sweet young thing it wouldn't be overstepping tooo far if she would stay just a little bit longer with him.
28.2 Things are going great! He feels because he's older he can raise and guide this dear child. (shades of 3.2?)
28.3 OMG, taking on a girlfriend is wearing him out!
28.4 But the girl loves him and stays by his side to support him (or is she after his money?)
28.5 And now the roles are reversed. The wife is taking equal care of the husband and they become true friends.
28.6 Bottom line, no way to avoid it: Sooner or later love is going to get ya!

Which leads to 29. When you've fallen in love, or into the abyss as some might say, how to survive? Stay tuned...

Hex 27 - Do I become vegetarian or not?
Hex 28 - Finding the great in yourself . You can't make a vegetarian omlette without breaking a few eggs.
Hex 29 - Tested and tested again. Just how great is your new found taste for vegetarian omlette .
