THE PARALLEL NUCLEAR PROGRESSION - PART TWO

Example 2: The likelihood of our moving to the new house soon is looking very poor.

Manifest Reading: 5,3,4 - 58

Hex 5, Hsu, Waiting.

3rd yang: Waiting in the mud brings about the arrival of the enemy.
Waiting with a lack of true clarity and perception (Waiting in the mud) brings about the encroachment of negative formations such as doubt, fear, misconception etc. The line-resultant, Hex 60 Chieh, emphasises the need for limitation and self-discipline.

4th yin: Waiting in blood. Get out of the pit.
The mind-set has slipped into a deeply negative viewpoint, the 'enemy' has arrived and one now waits 'in blood' suffering from a profound misconception. One is urged to 'Get out of the pit' and this is further emphasised by the line-resultant, Hex 43 Kuai, Parting, in which one is urged to part decisively from negative formations.

Hexagram Resultant, Hex 58 Tui: This is urging us to maintain our strength of will and purpose and to prevent the dissolution of our direction from 'disintegrating influences.'

Nuclear Progression: (38,2,3,4,5 - 37)

Hex 38, K'uei, Opposition/Misunderstanding

2nd yang: One meets his lord in a narrow street.
(b): If one meets his lord in a narrow street, one has not lost his way.
Meeting one's lord in a narrow street is a metaphor for finding one's true path and direction. One in serious error can rectify by "setting disharmony right when it is in full force" - Liu I Ming. The negative assessment implied in my statement to the I Ching is the misunderstanding that requires resolution. The line resultant, Hex 21 Shih Ho, indicates the need for cutting through to an accurate assessment.

3rd yin: One sees the wagon dragged back, the oxen halted
A man's hair and nose cut off,
Not a good beginning, but a good end.
One here despairs at the negative appearance of the situation. The cutting off of the nose implies a loss of accurate discrimination - the Mind of Tao is lost. However, if one can persevere through to the end, the intrinsic benevolence of the situation will become apparent. This is reinforced by the line resultant, Hex 14 Ta Yu, which emphasises the need to protect and preserve a goal or resource of high value.

4th yang: Isolated through opposition,
One meets a like-minded man with whom one can associate in good faith.
Despite the danger, no blame.
If we persist in a faulty assessment we will run the danger of isolating ourselves from our true direction. Guidance is available in the form of a teacher or, as is more often the case, in the form of the I Ching itself but we must learn to absorb its guidance in a spirit of trust and good faith. The line resultant, Hex 41 Sun, indicates that we must sacrifice to the higher principle within ourselves by exercising the utmost restraint on those factors that would break our resolve.

5th yin: Remorse disappears.
The companion bites his way through the wrappings.
If one goes to him, how could it be a mistake?
The companion - the higher-self - bites his way through the wrappings, the misconceptions that have clouded our judgement. 'One goes to him' by accepting and integrating the glimmering insights that the higher-self perceives. The line resultant, Hex 10 Lu, indicates that this is a careful and steady process.

The Nuclear Resultant, Hexagram 37, Chia Jen, The Family

The nuclear resultant, Hex 37 The Family, incorporates within its meaning the gentle control of ego/idea - Sun above Li. The three lines of the lower trigram, Li, reveal progressively the effects of a rising ego-self within a shared environment. In Line 1 the ego-self is securely contained within its purposeful role within the community, in Line 2 it begins to lose perseverance in self-containment by yielding to self-indulgent patterns of behaviour. Line 3 describes the escalation of this process as tempers flare up into open conflict.
In the context of this reading, the nuclear resultant is advocating the containment of ego-self in order to prevent the proliferation and escalation of misconceptions. In a situation shared by several people one is urged to contain one's ego-self for the greater good.

The Manifest and Nuclear Progressions Taken Together:

The manifest progression, 5,3,4 - 58, accurately describes the condition of waiting with a negative assessment of the situation. Through a lack of maintaining clarity one has fallen into a 'pit' of misconception and is urged to climb out in order to gain a true overview of one's situation. The resultant hexagram, 58, urges one to maintain one's will and not fall victim to disintegrating influences.
The nuclear progression, (38,2,3,4,5 - 37), underlies the manifest progression (the reading) in that it recognises the position created by misunderstanding, and risking the loss of, one's purposeful direction. It augments this with a view of the various factors at play in our mind-set. It offers the reassurance that the true direction is still available if we seek it openly and that despite the negative appearance of our situation success is possible if we persevere. It warns of the inherent danger of isolating ourselves from true faith and belief, and concludes with the guidance that we should recognise and absorb the truth as it becomes increasingly apparent - 'through the wrappings.'

The Archetypal Progression (63,1,2,3,4,5,6 - 64)

The Archetypal Progression can be stated quite succinctly as “From a state of settled consistency you have fallen into a state of unsettled restlessness.” Previous readings on this question had all indicated the need for a peaceful acceptance of the situation, allowing events to unfold, without any undue unsettling or direct intervention.

A Note on Guidance:

A good way to begin with acquiring ability in this field is to examine an old but familiar reading with which one has a good working knowledge. Calculate the nuclear progression and see how it conjoins with the initial, manifest, reading. Try to be as open as possible but remain grounded; do not allow your interpretation to become one of wild imagination. If the connection between the manifest and nuclear progressions is not immediately apparent do not despair - simply explore any remote possibilities that might occur and then put the reading on the back-burner and move on to another one. In time, as your knowledge of the hexagrams deepens, difficult progressions will become increasingly clear.
