Hi all,

I was reading the transcript of last night's chat and I noted with interest that Kevin brought up some speculation about the Mayan Calendar, Dec/22/2012, etc. I didn't see any reference in the conversation to Terence McKenna (who died in April of 2000) whom together with his brother Dennis published a book called "The invisible landscape : mind, hallucinogens, and the I Ching."

In that book there is a theory, stumbled upon while on a psychedelic trip with 'dimethyltryptamine' (DMT). Mr McKenna was a researcher in ethnobotanism. Here is a background excerpt of the theory from Alternativeculture.com (http://www.alternativeculture.com/spirit/timewave.htm)

quote
-----

The theory of Timewave Zero was revealed to Terence by an alien intelligence following a bizarre, quasi-psychedelic experiment conducted in the Amazon jungle in Colombia in 1971. Inspired by this influence Terence was instructed in certain transformation of numbers derived from the King Wen sequence of I Ching hexagrams. This led eventually to a rigorous mathematical description of what Terence calls the timewave, which correlates time and history with the ebb and flow of novelty, which is intrinsic to the structure of time and hence of the temporal universe. A peculiarity of this correlation is that at a certain point a singularity is reached which is the end of history-or at least is a transition to a suprahistorical order in which our ordinary conceptions of our world will be radically transformed. The best current estimate for the date of this point is December 21, 2012 CE [common era], the winter solstice of that year and also the end of the current era in the Mayan calendar.

Here is a link that explains the theory he calls "Timewave Zero". The theory links, almost as a coincidence, the King Wen sequence with the Mayan Calendar and its near end. Don't have to mention that a few apocaliptic visions may pop-up in your head after reading this and other links on this matter.

Now, this is fascinating stuff and most of it you must read, in my case at least, three or four times to grasp a little of it.

Also, this is not you regular "stoned junkie" talking. Mr. McKenna, of almost all researchers I've heard of, was one of the most knowledgeable in the field. Just to show you some of the doors he opened in his mind, here is an interesting link of one of his discertations on DMT called "Tryptamine Hallucinogens
and Consciousness":

BTW, reading about McKenna and participating in his board, way back some seven years, is that got me started in I Ching mailing lists. There I saw a reference to Hex-8 and subscribed to it. The rest is history in the making... :)

If I could find that magic mushroom... :)

Speaking of apocaliptic visions, a few months ago, my son, who is thirteen, came to me one morning to tell me about a dream he had the night before. He was very disturbed by the dream and with good reason.

We live near Philadelphia. In the dream he saw the city burning from far away and still he was being burned himself by the intense heat. The disturbing aspect of the dream is that where he was, he saw upon a wall a calendar of the year 2012 showing the month of December.

Now, I swear to God that I have never mentioned to my son my knowledge of these theories nor discussed anything in this regard with him before that day. When I heard of his dream, I try to explain the "coincidence" of the Mayan Calendar ending in that month and year. I left out other "back-up" theories that may stress an apocaliptic ending. Still, he's more or less convinced, after that dream, that the world will end in 2012.

Hi Luis...

Interesting timewave theory Terence came up with. Actually our discussion of Dec 21, 2012 came up initially in the thread I started on my recurring dream and the concept of fate -- http://www.onlineclarity.co.uk/I_Ching_community/messages/48/703.html?1054550413.

Kevin and I were exchanging emails about the dream when he mentioned the Mayan Calendar and 2012. My eyes popped open on seeing that because just the night before I had been surfing the net looking for information about how to tell time in the Book of Changes and, via google, found this site quite accidentally: http://www.survive2012.com/why2012fractal.html

By the way, I think you might find an interesting correlation between what I saw in my dream and Terence's theory.

Cheerio the noo,

I find the Mayan Calendar fascinating. I have read books lately that indicate that the same dates were derived by different methods by the Egyptian. I often wondered why in front of the great pyramid would stand the symbols for Aquarius and Leo. In fact, they seem to be of universal importance. One factor could be that the sun rules Leo, and is weakest in Aquarius. But there is more to this. I used to think, since Aries is the first sign, why not the signs for Aries and Libra? Now I understand. It is in these signs that a reversal takes places of the suns magnetic field. Not in the monthly sign, but in the precessional sign. That normally indicates a pole shift. There is plenty of evidence that happened about 10500 BC. The last time I looked at Richard Hoagland's webite, enterprisemission.com, (Hoagland is an advisor to NASA,) he discussed this event with a final note that this time, it may not happen. But why? Hopefully, he will write more in the near future, or already has, and explain that provocative statement.

Hi Val and Gene:

I certainly read your thread, which I find very interesting.

Regarding the Mayan calendar, any discussion on this should include references to Jose Arguelles. His work on the Mayan Calendar is superb and he is as much an icon of his time as Terence McKenna was.

Here are a few links on his work and in a couple of them you can download two free versions of software to calculate the Mayan dates. One of them is a simple windows program the other one is a Java aplet.

An interview with Jose Arguelles

Here is a link to one of Arguelles book in Amazon. I have not read it but the cover is very suggesting... The book is named "The Mayan Factor: Path Beyond Technology" I am ordering it now.

All I know about Mr. Arguelles is from reading websites and from references in a book by Marysol Gonzalez Sterling named "I-Ching and Transpersonal Psychology". So we'll see what I find in his book.

Cheers,

Luis

I find this thread fascinating, as I have had the experience of speaking with 'another being' originally through kabbalistic practice. This experience became a regular occurence and even more interesting when the I Ching became one of the communication tools. This being semed to be a 5th dimensional from Acturus.
Many years after these experiences I was given Jose Arguelles book 'The Arcturus Probe'. For the first time I found 'resonance' with my own experience.
If I have learn't anything from these experiences it was that , the most underrated power we have , is the power of the imagination. By allowing our minds, thoughts and ideas to be free, while being conscious of their power we co create the next step in evolution, with the help of those who have already taken that step.
With regard to the I Ching, it proved to me that it was not just an 'earth' based teaching, but a universal one.
