My name is Kate. I have been using the I Ching for many years....albeit without any direction or help with interpretation..I consider myself a long-time novice...but now plan on learning more.

I asked the I Ching about a relationship that ended badly about a year ago. I have a sense that the relationship is not over forever and that it will start again in sometime in the future. I asked the I Ching specifically for a time of return not knowing if this is possible and I tossed Hexegram 4, line 4.

I would be thankful for your help with interpreting the hexagram.

Hi Kate
The yi appears to me to be advising you strongly to stop thinking like this. I was just wondering if you have asked IF there would be a return as your question seems to suggest that there definatley will be one.

Wilhelm's commentary of this line talks about wishful thinking:

Six in the fourth place means:

Entangled folly bring humiliation.

For youthful folly it is the most hopeless thing to entangle itself in empty imaginings. The more obstinately it clings to such unreal fantasies, the more certainly will humiliation overtake it.

Kate, I think the Yi is not answering about the time but rather about the matter itself. It seems to be saying to stop dreaming and move on... Sometimes a brutal reality check, though unpleasant, gives us the right push to let go.

All the best

When will the relationship restart?
4.4 >64

Welcome to Clarity, Kate.

Hexagram 4 is a hexagram of learning and 64 of the dissipation of spirits. The relationship will restart once the parties have learned to compromise issues and past hurts have dissipated. For 4.4 Bradford has

Afflicted by ignorance
A shame

Applying this to the relationship, a better understanding of interpersonal dynamics is needed.

So Thankful

Wow....I am touched by everyones help and interpretations. What a wonderful website. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

Pocossin: Yes, this is the feeling that I got from the hexagram...and yes...it makes sense..learning to compromise and healing past hurts in this case. Will certainly take a very long time should the relationship begin again in the future....and my impression has been that it will. What do you think afflicted by ignorance- a shame could mean? Thank you for your help. Tossed hexagram 34-no changing lines when asked how to deal with the situation...your translation?

Steve: I have asked the I Ching "if" there will be a return and my impression is that there will be...but it will be very gradual and important to have the right state of mind...but of course...i'm a novice and yes..time to move on in other ways. Just tossed Hexagram-34 when asked how to now deal with the situation. You see...he works across that hall from me and it makes it very difficult to have my own space to move on....regardless of outcome. I will check out the website!

Chris: I think there may be a return (based on my intuition and past iching readings)..but of course...there may not be and yes....either way..I think hexagram 34 is saying that I need to move on so that the possiblity of the relationship restarting can happen...it has to be correct and it can only be correct if I move on. YOu think?

Hi Kate,

again Wilhelm's translation of hex 34, in my view perfectly self-explanatory:

Thunder in heaven above: The image of THE POWER OF THE GREAT.
Thus the superior man does not tread upon paths
That do not accord with established order.

You have a lot of energy at the moment and feel self confident and full of enthusiasm, which could lead you to be impatient and take inappropriate action.

Kate, you have not shared your past readings so we cannot comment, but the last two in my view go in the same direction. As you very appropriately say, what have you got to lose in moving on? If the return is meant to be, it will happen anyway. If not, you will have spared yourself days of pointless anxiety.

Keep strong! I wish you best of luck with all you desire

Across the hall makes it hard but yes you need to at least try and focus on something else for the time being
Maybe by doing that it will change the dynamics of the friendship
