A friend of mine is in a difficult predicament, but seems rather impervious to accepting help. I asked the Yi how I should proceed and received hexagram 43.1.2.4.5.6 turning to 52. 43 seems to imply the need for action (but changing lines 1 and 6 seem unfortunately ominous), but hexagram 52 seems to suggest exactly the opposite. I would like to help but all other friends appear to have banged their heads against a firm refusal. Any thoughts on how to interpret this hexagram would be very welcome. Thank you.

No, this cast isn't calling you to action at all.

43 can be a declaration, an intention and here it hits a dead end.

You use the word 'impervious', that's the 52 of it, double mountain. You can shout what you think at a mountain all you want but your words will bounce back. Those who 'banged their heads against firm refusal' also met the mountain.

Don't proceed with this intention but perhaps just look for practical ways you might alleviate the person's troubles. I don't know if that's possible but I think less words more showing you care through action is the way to go.

43>52 just looks like a picture of a declaration hitting a dead end 'I intend to help you and.....' just isn't the way to go especially as it's not a very receptive stance to take at all since it's all about telling her or deciding to talk to her rather than being led by her.

Lots of change lines so look at the change patterns here which are 10 and 15. It is a risky proposal and so go into this with a more low key kind of practical helpfulness. That is rather than attempt to heal the problem just help with the fallout from the problem in whatever ways you can.

Was just about to post something a lot like that  "Picture yourself making a declaration to a mountain..."

43.6 though...wonder if it's either:
  • keep in touch without offering help, just to stay in touch
    and/or
  • at some point your friend will realize he/she needs help after all and then you'll be the logical person to call out to. 6th lines can kind of stand apart from the rest of the reading as an overview, and sometimes even represent a different person. I think it's at least possible.
(Added: My head is not all the way here...obviously what Trojina said about helping with practical things is great advice and I didn't mean to sound otherwise although I managed to. Doing what you can or what he/she will accept keeps you in touch.)

May thanks Trojina and Liselle. Your comments appear to fit very well with the pattern of interactions occurred so far (with other common friends), where every offer of help has only generated an even more negative response. I think I will stand by, watch the denouement of events and remain available for care if so desired. Incidentally, this is a case in which the relating hexagram seems to shed light on the subjective side of the hexagram.
