Hello everyone,
I have been learning iching for the last 4 months. Unemployment is the main reason why I started tossing coins. I have been pursuing for a job in my area of expertise for more than 6 months now and I think I am arriving at a "judgement point" where I have to decide whether I should continue to stay in this country (call it A) or to return home for employment.

Just five minutes ago I asked Yi:
" Should I return home for employment?"
Hex 46.1.5> 5

"Should I continue to stay in A for employment?"
Hex 13.1.6>31

Yi seems to suggest - it's time to pack your bags and leave......

Somebody please help!

Should I return home for employment?
46.1.5 > 5

If you left your home country to seek employment in your area of expertise in A, are you likely to find such employment in your home country now?

Hexagram 46 with Earth over Wind does suggests a return.

Earth = homeland
Wind = air travel

Hexagram 5 suggests (to me) outlying regions, so if you do return you might find employment in an out-of-the-way place. But be sure you have exhausted all possibilities in A first. See the great man -- if there is one -- and "Heaps up small things in order to achieve something high and great." Network through social contacts and polish your résumé.

I'm something of a broken record on this point, but you may get more sensible answers if you wrap your questions in terms of "what would be the consequence of..." for projected actions.

Ergo: "what would be the consequence of returning to my home in search of employment?"

46-- Pushing upward -- a very positive hex showing one moving up and away from danger or problems. Both changing lines support this. Line 1 talks about your accord with superiors, which will not go unnoticed. Line 5 speaks in terms of having reached a place of success, and the dangers of getting overconfident. There are worse problems to have! Changing to 5: again, the image of moving up -- water moving up into the heavens. This doesn't promise instant success -- rains fall in their own time -- but an indication of coming success if you continue to work on the issue. Your international experience may well be helpful in your renewed job search.

"What would be the consequence of staying in A for employment?" 13.1.6>31

13 -- Community, and the necessity of cultivating a community of like-minded folks. Line 6 suggests that such a community that you might have cultivated in A may not be significant in terms of the big issues, but not without some personal value. Perhaps some friendships you have made are all that is keeping you where you are? Changing to 31: Attraction. Further indication that some personal attachment is affecting your career plans, or you are attracted to some new venture outside your typical employment.

Notably, little in the second casting addresses the career issues, unless you are planning on a whole new career venture where you must assemble a community, or in some sort of communal project where working within a team is required.

Thank you Pocossin and Elias for your reply.

I would like to add some details about myself. I think the details will give a clearer picture why and how I have derived my questions, and for readers to have a better understanding of the impressive details Pocossin and Elias have made.

Be prepared, I think it is going to be one long post.

I have been working as a freelance public health analyst over the last few months. Projects are barely there and with the economic crisis, obtaining funding is not easy.

My job requires me to deal mainly with population numbers and it usually involves a community or a few collaborating countries. So, to put it short, a place where human beings exist, there should be a job for me. However, as a young graduate, I find it difficult to secure a full-time employment in my area of expertise. All I am looking for is an entry level position, a position where I am able to grow and learn. The expiration date on my work visa in A is also hitting my nerves a little. I am hoping that I will be able gain at least one year of work experience before deciding where to go next.

Returning home is not really an option. I view it as returning to square one and that Country A is well-developed and mature in public health (interventions, policies, etc), excellent place for my career. Apart from professional reasons, I have personal reasons in staying in Country A. Mainly because my partner and my friends are here. We share very similar views in many things and particular in research and policies in A. There is no doubt that my personal attachment interferes with my career plans.

In regards to “seeing the great man”, I think I have met him. At least, in my mind, he is one great and renowned man. A month ago, I sought for his advice regarding my situation. He thinks that it is too early to give up and has given me an incredible amount of support. He also gave me very useful tips in getting interview offers.

After a good five months and “N”-numbered of jobs I have applied for, an interview offer finally came knocking on my door. I was delighted and arranged a second meeting with “the great man” for further advice. I also sought for friends who are currently working in the country A’s health organization for insights. I have done all that I could to ensure a 100% or at least 99% in getting the job.

Two weeks has passed since the interview and I have heard nothing from the recruiters. It is an entry level job, exactly the kind of job I am looking for. It makes me wonder if there is anything wrong with me or has the HR decided to cease recruitment, again? (Early this year, I was invited for an interview and just a day before the interview, I was told that recruitment for the position was suspended.)

Despite my previous relevant work experience, awards and qualifications, I am not sure why I have not been able to get a job in A. :brickwall: Perhaps there is a reason why we cannot get all we want. And the reason is yet to be known.

Before I sign off, I asked Yi again.

“what will be the outcome if I continue to pursue employment in A?”
Hex 13.2.3.4> 61

It appears to me that a lot of hard work is required and that I should remain determined? Changing lines in Hex 13 appears to be explaining the elements evolving around my current situation.

“Will I get the job with Health Organization X (Country A)?”
Hex 42.5.6 >24

The first moving line appears positive. But I am not sure about the second (42.6). Is Yi telling me to calm down and wait for the outcome? And with Hex 24, I get confused at times. Is Yi saying returning to the right path? Getting a job? Or returning home?

“What should I expect if I apply to Company Y (back home)?”
Hex 26.5> 9
“The tusk of a gelded boar.
Good fortune.”
Errr… I’m guessing if I were to channel my energy to Y’s application there will be good fortune?

No, there is nothing wrong with you. You have good communication and numeric skills, judging from your posts. We are in an era of contraction because of excesses in the past, and values are hard to preserve.

“What should I expect if I apply to Company Y (back home)?”
Hex 26.5> 9
“The tusk of a gelded boar.
Good fortune.”

Hexagram 26 concerns the preservation of values. The "tusk of a gelded boar" parallels the "headboard of a young bull" in the previous line and refers to value preserved that might otherwise be lose. Somehow you need to preserve and sharpen your skills -- the values you have acquired. But aren't there more possibilities? I googled "public health analyst," and found a range of possibilities. Would it be improper for you to have multiple applications out at the same time?

Oddly, the emblem of hexagram 9 is a shoe returning, pointing downward toward the origin. (Farm animals returning to the barnyard at night may be one of the meanings of this hexagram.) I would not rule out Y or X and Z to get a start in this career.

Thank you Pocossin.

Your comments are very supportive and helpful.

I rang the recruiters yesterday and found out that my interview was unsuccessful. Hex 24 was implying no progress/ advancement in regards to my situation. Oh well, there is always more than one perfect job out there. I just have to find it.

I will be dispersing my resumes in different areas of the world where I am permitted to work in. And perhaps, the perfect job is just round the corner. It is acceptable to apply to more than one vacancy at a time. However, the mixture of slow recruitment process and constant rejections has very much hindered my momentum.

I recognize this forum as an informative and supportive site where many Yi-student and elites gather. I will continue to update my status. Well, I may not be leading the most exciting and extraordinary life but I would like to think that whatever I am going through right now will serve as a guide or perhaps a form of motivation for others out there. Someone may be going through whatever I am experiencing right now tomorrow or ten years down the line. Perhaps writing short stories of my job hunting experience can be more than a statement of fact “I am unemployed”.

P.S. Pocossin, how do you leave the “The Following User Says Thank You to tifa For This Useful Post:” line?

Ermmm... For some strange reason. There isn't one! I only see "quote", and two square icons marking "multi-quote this message" and "quick reply to this message". And I am logged in!

There may be a bug in programming that's keeping the Thanks button from displaying for you. Some weeks ago another member commented that he didn't see the Thanks button.

Yes, and sorry I missed it. I focused on another casting and overlooked it. The winter solstice is this month. From the Image, "Thus the kings of antiquity closed the passes at the time of solstice." That is inauspicious for employment based on government funds.

Thank you for your reply Gato. Sorry, only managed to get around to my post after a week.
Yes, initially i see Hex 46 changing to Hex 5 as stay at my current place and wait it out. But the question was tailored for returning home. Are there occassions where Yi response to your situation and not solely to the question itself?

It has been almost a year since I started this thread.

Again I received hexagram 13.1.6 and I googled for some insights. I'm glad that google and online clarity brought me back to my thread and now I can actually make some evaluations/ feedback on the hexagrams. Many thanks to friends on this forum who have contributed inputs to my casts.

Hex 46.1.5>5 : Whether I should have gone home?
In retrospect, I think Yi was telling me to wait. There will be opportunity to get what I want.

Hex 13.1.6>31: there was a strong attraction in staying in country A. However, there will be no close commitments. i.e. no job. even if there is an interview, no useful connection will be made. Touch and go, that's how I would put it. If one were to look at these two lines separately, it does not seem harmful or hurtful. However, when they are moving at the same time resulting in hex 31, it means whatever you are yearning for will not be yours.

All in all, the casts does suggest no job for me in Country A but it does not necessary mean returning home. I have now moved out of Country A and working in another foreign land.

best of luck to readers
