What's your feeling about the meaning of unchanging hexagrams? Harmen Mesker has the opinion that they suggest that the course of action you're considering or the path you are on already is balanced. It's a signal of "you're on the right trajectory already."

I get the sense -- which is not quite the same -- of a certain degree of helplessness. Like I'm in a certain terrain now and am waiting for certain things to happen.

What are your feelings, thoughts, and experiences?

In my humble view, if we view 'degree of change' shown in different ways in the Hexagram, unchanging hexagram means no change on the first level.
Meaning nothing is so unbalanced as to turn into its opposite or at least will draw attention.

There are changes coming from other 'layers', the hexagram itself, the relations of different parts of it and other stuff depending what system we use. But on the strongest 'level' there is nothing so unbalanced as to create change.
That isn't good or bad, in my humble view. As change can be perceived as good or bad. Someone without a job would welcome a change(where they find a job), so balance is great for some periods and awful for others. ; )

Ahh thanks. I've seen so many of the unchanging experiences threads but not this prefatory one :)

Unchanging hexagrams can have so many different interpretations, which the thread Trojina posted goes a long way to confirming,

They always used to cause me some bewilderment, after all the title on the book cover says Book of Changes and yet in some cases some changes can be unchanging,

My thinking to set my mind at rest went something along the lines of:
Change occurs when either old yang becomes young yin or old yin becomes young yang. There is a flip, In an unchanging hexagram nothing flips. However, in every situation that is asked about the young-ness is on display in some shape or form.

I think I was watching a re-run of the 1970's British sit-com 'Are You Being Served' set in a department store called Grace Brothers. Where the owner of the store, an infirm, doddering gentleman perhaps in his 80's or 90's was affectionately known as 'Young Mr Grace'.

(Light-bulb moment) So, I thought, how old do you have to be to not be considered young and how young do you have to be not to be considered old. Then by extension, the term young probably exists as as a spectrum or at the very least on a sliding scale. Perhaps in the build up to change there is a precursor position of motion where yin and yang are still an a state of balance which may not be one of static equilibrium but more one of balanced motion, one which is still short of being that moment of flip.

I have yet to read any comments supporting this hypothesis coming from Lao Tze or King Wen, but then I'm not a fluent Chinese speaker and I'm sure it's out there somewhere.

So how to use this concept of pre-flip motion to assist me in understanding a reading that returns an unchanging hexagram. Most commentaries say that all you have to go on to find meaning are the text of the Judgement and the Image.

At the root of any divination is a release of things stored in the unconscious into the conscious. The Judgement is the 'basic' oracular response which likens the situation asked about to ancient pictures, perspectives or actions that speak to and of the qualities of that particular time. The Image comes from texts written in the Wings and it is here that I see the sense of motion being addressed. Yi advocates in these few words the course of action for the junzi to take to promote growth.

The situation is not yet able to flip but if this path is followed then things that are unseen or hidden in the situation will become more conscious. e,g 22 ' Brighten and give clarity to what is going on here for everyone, however, be aware there are other ways to do this than by wielding a rod of iron'. Of course, this improving awareness tip does not have to be followed and if it isn't, for the time being, nothing too much will come of it. Any stagnation or backward steps can be accommodated on the sliding scale without any immediate flip coming into play.

The unchanging hexagram does seem to indicate that you are in a position of balance in the specific situation that you asked the question about. There is a sense of stasis in evidence and there is a degree of freedom for you to go about things in the manner you choose. This is not a mere point of equilibrium more one that is held over a variable range. Choosing motion in the direction advocated by the Image will see more opportunities for growth become available. Choosing motion in the opposite direction, or choosing no motion at all (stagnation), will eventually bring forward another set of unique outcomes for you to experience.

I do not see the quality of an unchanging hexagram as helplessness although the possibility of this does exist within the field. Helplessness, is a place of inability to take action, or to put things in motion and equates to stagnation. Consciously choosing what motion to instigate in the field of an unchanging hexagram is at its very best an opportunity to grow.

... or perhaps it's nothing like this at all.

A bit more about 'Young Mr Grace' as I've been chewing the cud over my last post.

Firstly, Grace Hex 22, and the associated idea that in a state of grace 'you begin without a face' (Karcher). All the young lines that exist in every unchanging hexagram, perhaps, carry a state of Grace in which there is recognition of the qualities that were required to achieve your arrival at this time and in this way and it is now incumbent upon you to decide the direction, strength and pace that you place upon your motion. This combination, will be unique to you however, will define the next 'face' you show to the world.

'Young Mr Grace' was only a minor character in the sit com. When he did appear he had a limited role and the theme of his appearance was to be either appearing out of the lift, having descended, I assume, from the higher realms of Grace Brothers corporation and then making his way across the ground floor of the department store to the glass fronted doors that opened out into the big wide world. By way of variation, in some episodes his direction of motion was from the doors to the lift. On his path he was always accompanied by a fulsome nurse who was a shining example of natural beauty. in contrast to her wrinkled, slight looking boss.

That was the sum total of his role. I do not recall a great deal of dialogue for him, either. He appeared, walked and then disappeared. His catch phrase, spoken just before he parted (whichever way the motion had been), and perhaps the only words he uttered in the series, was 'You're all doing very well!' which was directed, in a regal manner, towards the floor manager and sales staff of the ground floor.

Perhaps, 'Young Mr Grace' can be viewed as the very embodiment of an Unchanging Hexagrams.

... or maybe it's nothing like that at all.

For me it makes sense, first of all, to understand if it is possible for there to be something completely, absolutely Unchanging and what does that mean?
and in the particular case of "Unchanging hexagrams" from the Book of Changes, what does it mean and how to deal with those "Unchanging Situations"?

Just to stimulate curiosity on the subject of "absolutely Unchanging", I leave these links on the advancement of science at a mathematical and experimental level in the achievement of absolute zero temperature...

https://www.sciencealert.com/after-...o-has-been-declared-mathematically-impossible

https://www.popularmechanics.com/science/a43522340/secret-way-to-get-absolute-zero/

Taking this into account, what are my feelings, thoughts, and experiences about this theme of Unchanging hexagrams?

I consider what the "yin yang patterns of change" tool tells me in this situation of Unchanging hexagrams:

-"there is a paradoxical relationship to be perceived"

If you notice, and it has certainly already been mentioned in this forum, the yang pattern is represented by hex 2 in the unchanging form, completely static and without energy, and the yin pattern represented by hex 1, full of vitality and relating the Unchanging hexagram and its opposite!

...now this situation shows a completely inverted and "paradoxical" relationship in the functioning of the "yin yang patterns of change"

-the yang pattern, the one that always represents the energy and impulse behind change, is empty of energy and static

-the yin pattern, the one responsible for materializing the impulse behind the change into a real, tangible thing, no longer has this natural role of concretization and instead represents this yang impulse.

...what paradoxical situation is this?

imagine this paradoxical situation applied to the functioning of nature represented by a tree adapting to the cycle of the four seasons:

-the yang pattern represented by the difference in temperature, light, energy, humidity and soil nutrition between summer and winter would be static, without variation... summer = winter

-the yin pattern represented by life and transformation from the small seed sprouting and being born as a tree to the fruit with the next seed, would be just an impulse of idealization without any capacity for implementation....spring = autumn

...in this example we have a potential seed, with potential life and potential fruit, but without conditions (summer=winter) for this to happen...how good it would be to make a new tree grow, create and harvest a new fruit... .but everything is just a potential impulse with no ability to be implemented (spring = autumn)

-Whenever a situation of Unchanging hexagrams appears to me, I ask myself: "what paradoxical situation is happening... perhaps something where there is no energy, there is no creative impulse, but even so, and without the ability to achieve it, a birth is dreamed of of something that will bear fruit"

There is no special meaning involved with unchanging hexagrams.

(Other than it being the only time where the Oracle/Judgment actually applies and even then only if you were seeking a judgement/auspice in your question, for 'how to' type questions look to the Image.)

Unchanging hex's are the simplest and easiest to understand answer one can receive. The 2nd easiest to understand is a reading with a single change line.

It is nonsense to say that unchanging means the situation won't change.
(With the exception of 32 un, of course.)
Example, you ask where someone is and you receive 37 un: that doesn't mean the person will never leave their uncles house.

What's your feeling about the meaning of unchanging hexagrams?
My observation and experience indicate to m.e. that there is no special meaning.

Of course not never, but it could very well mean the person's at home now, when you asked, and that's all Yi has to say about it.

Right, That's exactly what it means.

I was pointing out the absurdity of the idea that an unchanging hex means things are static or won't change.

Uncle!, Uncle!
(Substitute any relatives title.)

In a way, it is funny to see that there are always attempts to capture something (in this case hexagrams without moving lines), to give it a fixed meaning that can be referred back to, with a subject and book that is about the everlasting change. Perhaps a little silly?
Can't hexagrams without moving lines be just that: a hexagram without moving lines. Let the situation in which such a hexagram presents itself determine its meaning. I believe the text of the Judgement, the Image, the composition of the trigrams etc. show exactly what the meaning of the absence of moving lines is for that situation.

Curious about what the Yi itself has to say about this, I asked:
What is the meaning of a hexagram without moving lines?
The answer I received was H25.3.5 <> H30
What this means I cannot determine for others. Everyone can see for themselves if there is anything interesting in this answer for him/her/them 😉

'Disentangling' through 'Radiance.
A powerful insight for you Hans into the depths of the medium of unchanging hexagrams.

When I asked the same question Yi returned 29 unchanging. (I likes the fact I got an unchanging hexagram as a reply - Cool Yi! :) )

In Karcher-land this hexagram is named 'Repeating the Pit / Ghost River', which carries nuances of confronting fears or rising to a challenge, in a manner of 'unseen' spiritual sacrifice.

Huang names 29 'Darkness' and indicates that it beckons to the honouring of truth-filled acts. Through continually melding heart and mind virtue is enhanced, smoothly and prosperously.

Both perspectives, for me, carry that sense of motion I outlined earlier. Waves of rising and melding.

I guess everyone would benefit in their personal understanding of unchanging hexagrams by asking of Yi a similar or identical question to the one offered by liquidity. It worked for me!

Hi breakmov
Just to stimulate curiosity on the subject of "absolutely Unchanging",
I am in agreement with you that 'absolutely unchanging' is not possible in this reality. Stones, rocks and mountains are all successfully reshaped by wind or water even though it may be a slow process of a million years. Entropy will have its way in the end.

I consider what the "yin yang patterns of change" tool tells me in this situation of Unchanging hexagrams:
This is a good perspective to bring into the discussions as 'Change Operators', which apply to all hexagram casts, with both changing or unchanging outcomes, can bring powerful insights when incorporated into the reading.
As you say, a reversal of yin / yang does seem to create a paradox of sorts.
-the yang pattern represented by the difference in temperature, light, energy, humidity and soil nutrition between summer and winter would be static, without variation... summer = winter
Karcher defines the yang pattern as the 'Yang Operator' or the 'Energy Operator' and for every unchanging hexagram, as you say. is Hex 2. In his words, the Energy Operator "describes the actions through which Change occurs and its outer transformative aspects. It offers an outer stance or strategy towards the outer world."

-the yin pattern represented by life and transformation from the small seed sprouting and being born as a tree to the fruit with the next seed, would be just an impulse of idealization without any capacity for implementation....spring = autumn
Karcher defines the yin pattern as the 'Yin Operator' or the 'Context Operator' and for every unchanging hexagram, as you say. is Hex 1. In his words, the Context Operator "describes the place where Change occurs and its inner transformative aspects. It offers an inner stance or strategy towards the inner world."
...in this example we have a potential seed, with potential life and potential fruit, but without conditions (summer=winter) for this to happen...how good it would be to make a new tree grow, create and harvest a new fruit... .but everything is just a potential impulse with no ability to be implemented (spring = autumn)
The idea that unchanging hexagrams are jam-packed with potential is one that resonates strongly with me.
Potential is aligned with a capacity for growth and an outcome based in the future and your seed analogy demonstrates this.

One aspect that is implicit in your post, and could, I feel, be more beneficially stated is that the 'Context Operator' and the 'Energy Operator' act together in unison across a threshold. They hold hold the very essence of transition, in a liminal space and it is incumbent on the querent to ride those waves and release the potential. The Context Operator (yin pattern) will inspire (yang) changes in the inner landscape and the 'Energy Operator' (yang operator) will nourish (yin) the new in the outer world.

Both operate together to provide a new strategy and stance, based in aligning inner and outer world The unchanging hexagram provides the place and time for the strategy to be developed and the stance to be held, even perhaps tentatively tested, without as yet an explicit call to Change. From this perspective I do not see a paradox residing in the way you do.

Hi my_key,

Please be aware that in the book "Total I Ching: myths for change" there is a mistake in the definition of change patterns.
Fortunately, on Karcher website there is a PDF on how
he applies the change patterns, there with the correct definition.

Karcher:
 The Inner Yang or Inspiration Operator describes the inner transformative aspects of a situation. To find the Inner or Inspiration Operator, you place a yang or strong line in each place where change is occurring independent of what kind of line is changing in the Primary Figure, and a yin or supple line in each stable place. This is independent of the particular quality of the changing and stable lines in the Primary Figure.

 The Outer Yin or Realization Operator describes the places where change occurs and its possibilities of realizing your desires. To find the Outer or Realization Operator, you place a yin or supple line in each place where change is occurring independent of what kind of line is changing in the Primary Figure, and a yang or strong line in each stable place. This is independent of the particular quality of the changing and stable lines.

But for me, in relation to this topic, what stands out is precisely the fact that there is currently the certainty that everything is in motion relative to everything else. Even trying, experimentally, to force something to a state of zero energy, it turned out impossible. Mathematically, it is also proven.
(perhaps this certainty did not exist when the book of CHANGES was created)

... and therefore how to interpret what the book of CHANGES wants to convey when it presents a pattern (hexagram) completely isolated, Unchanging, from everything else... isolated from this whole that is represented by the interaction of these 64 hexagram, which in essence is nothing more than the representation of "hex1" and "hex2" interacting with each other in this "eternal universal marriage"?

...how to interpret an Unchanging hexagram taking into account what was written about its intrinsic characteristics, if these "intrinsic characteristics" are also defined in a relative way and in comparison also with what each one is not in relation to the other 63 hexagrams?
- how to interpret this paradox of an Unchanging hexagram, completely isolated in itself, when everything exists relatively and in relation to everything else... this is the question that cannot be forgotten?

This paradox is best represented with the help of 'Change Operators' when the mathematical process of its application is clear.

"What is the meaning of a hexagram without moving lines?"

Using your hexagram 29 UN and applying the mathematical process of 'Change Operators' it will become clear how the paradox exposes a very interesting way of thinking about what Yi wants to convey in your case:

the definition and mathematical application of the 'Change Operators', as you can see in the image, already implies from the root what you wrote, but not only the 'Change Operators' but also the opposite hexagram. - the yin-yang concept emerging in the mathematical application of 'Change Operators'.

But it turns out that in the particular case of Unchanging hexagram, the yang pattern is always hex 2 UN, a completely yin characteristic in a yang function...there is no inspiring energy for something to be accomplished.
..and this is also why the yin pattern is left with a completely yang characteristic with hex 1, with no capacity to realize, only to idealize...everything is blocked, in a situation of Unchanging hexagram, due to the inversion of the functions of the ' Change Operators'.
- we are faced with an "incomplete/impossible cycle, there is no energy ("summer = winter")

How can it help to try to relate this vision of a paradoxical situation with what is behind the question:

"What is the meaning of a hexagram without moving lines?"

"we see a hex 29 "trying to be born" but without the energy and conditions to do so, just a fictitious birth as there is no yin pattern with the capacity to achieve it. We also see a hex 30, an "imaginary fruit", not real, without the power to clarify and illuminate a true path, with a secure heart, capable of confronting the birth of fear and anxiety of a path without certainties."

...this is just a very simple example of how this "paradox approach" helps consider what 29 UN could be saying in your case... "all in all" I got the impression that you are in a situation where you still don't know very well "how to deal" with the Unchanging hexagrams....which makes sense to me considering the paradoxical situation I was talking about in relation to them.

What's your feeling about the meaning of unchanging hexagrams?

Each hexagram images a different, basic life situation. The individual lines portray aspects or variants of that basic situation. So when you draw an unchanging hexagram, the Yi is telling you that what you're dealing with here is the basic situation, not a variant or aspect of the basic situation..

Harmen Mesker has the opinion that they suggest that the course of action you're considering or the path you are on already is balanced. It's a signal of "you're on the right trajectory already."

It depends on the particular hexagram that you draw, not on whether the hexagram's unchanging or unchanging.

I get the sense -- which is not quite the same -- of a certain degree of helplessness. Like I'm in a certain terrain now and am waiting for certain things to happen.

It depends on the meaning and message of the particular hexagram. Some hexagrams have a sort of 'your hands are tied' pattern, and some offer all sorts of agency.

Hi my_key,

Fortunately, on Karcher website there is a PDF on how

You are right. I have different sets of notes and did refer to the ones taken from 'Total I Ching', many years ago, rather than the ones I made more recently having discovered the Karcher website - https://ichinglivingchange.org/. Thank you for correcting things. My error.

Inner Yang or Inspiration Operator i.e yang lines replacing all changing lines: yin replace unchanging
Outer Yin or Realization Operator i.e yin lines replacing all changing lines : yang replace unchanging

In the later website Karcher did change Inner Yang / Inspiration Operator as equating to inner transformative aspects of a situation whereas previously the Yang / Energy Operator was seen as relating to outer transformative aspects.

Similarly, Outer Yin / Realization Operator describes places where change occurs and its possibilities of realizing your desires. Realisation clearly relates to outer, whereas before (in TIC) 'Yin Operator' or the 'Context Operator' describes the place where Change occurs and its inner transformative aspects.

So there is a repositioning in his thinking, or the correcting of an error taking place. The inclusion of the descriptors Inner Yang and Outer Yin help to remove any confusion.

I agree, situations are never without motion. Sometimes the motion is imperceptible by human measurements The maths is something that I do not easily follow, and I'm glad that there are others, like you, who pick up this baton and run with it. I'll defer on making a comment on this part.
... and therefore how to interpret what the book of CHANGES wants to convey when it presents a pattern (hexagram) completely isolated, Unchanging, from everything else... isolated from this whole that is represented by the interaction of these 64 hexagram, which in essence is nothing more than the representation of "hex1" and "hex2" interacting with each other in this "eternal universal marriage"?
Yup. In the wider field of 64 hexagrams this is certainly so. Even the hierarchy in the nuclear hexagrams point to this. Boiling down to 4 core energies - 1,2,63.64. Hex 1 and 2 provide original power while 63 and 64 bring the twist in the tail that keeps the marriage fresh. In every shamanic journey, there is a twist that provides an unexpected starting point for the next step.

Everything in Yi, in life even, is a combination of an ever-flowing pattern of Hex 1 and Hex 2 energy. so I do not see Unchanging hexagrams as being isolated. They are unchanging, which does not mean they are without motion, nor are they separate.
...how to interpret an Unchanging hexagram taking into account what was written about its intrinsic characteristics, if these "intrinsic characteristics" are also defined in a relative way and in comparison also with what each one is not in relation to the other 63 hexagrams?
- how to interpret this paradox of an Unchanging hexagram, completely isolated in itself, when everything exists relatively and in relation to everything else... this is the question that cannot be forgotten?
Do you see the paradox as solely being the isolation?
This paradox is best represented with the help of 'Change Operators' when the mathematical process of its application is clear
I'll take your word. Maths does not equate with clarity in my world although there is enough substantive examples to show it has a real bearing in the form of our Universe. I remember a maths teacher who 'proved' 1=2, to the class. Eventually revealing some jiggery-pokery involving a hidden algebraic division that equated to dividing by zero, that sent the whole 'proof. tumbling to the ground. The twist was there if only the class had been smart enough to see it.
Using your hexagram 29 UN and applying the mathematical process of 'Change Operators' it will become clear how the paradox exposes a very interesting way of thinking about what Yi wants to convey in your case:

You've left me way behind with all this maths stuff. I'm glad you find some sense in it.

I can see, without maths (that still serves to confuse me), how yang pattern is based in the influence of yin and yin patterns are based in yang for unchanging hexagrams.

I do feel though that in using the maths to prove an "incomplete/impossible cycle" and showing summer = winter in this reality that maybe there is a aspect of Change Operator functionality that is 'not of this world' and is playing out at some subliminal level, below the threshold of sensation or consciousness.

For me the relationship of Inspiration and Realisation, has to be one that is one of mutual regard. They work together not at odds. Karcher does talk of 'creative tension' in his work and perhaps is is the paradoxical nature that you see which is behind this. Contrariness always creates some some sort of tension which is in need of release at the right time and in the right place.
How can it help to try to relate this vision of a paradoxical situation with what is behind the question:

"we see a hex 29 "trying to be born" but without the energy and conditions to do so, just a fictitious birth as there is no yin pattern with the capacity to achieve it. We also see a hex 30, an "imaginary fruit", not real, without the power to clarify and illuminate a true path, with a secure heart, capable of confronting the birth of fear and anxiety of a path without certainties."
This would also support a perspective that Unchanging Hexagrams, that are without the energy and the right conditions for a birth / manifestation of a change, who spark some 'creative tension'. Inspired to form, in the inner landscape, and not quite ready to be realised into a new dream. Inner and Outer influences hold the strategy or state of in some subliminal place that provides a nucleus of new potential. These work together in harmony as in Unchanging Hexagram, both yin patterns and yang patterns operate simultaneously, combining just Hex 1 and Hex 2 energies across the threshold between two worlds.

Maybe it is this nucleus of potential, in some other place, that is born.
...this is just a very simple example of how this "paradox approach" helps consider what 29 UN could be saying in your case... "all in all" I got the impression that you are in a situation where you still don't know very well "how to deal" with the Unchanging hexagrams....which makes sense to me considering the paradoxical situation I was talking about in relation to them.
I'm not sure that there is a simple example when you bring Change Operators into the equation.

Your impression could well be a possibility. Over the years I have developed a methodology of getting a meaning from casts giving Unchanging Hexagrams, For now, I'm ok with how I work with them, but that doesn't mean that how I deal with them now is the complete and clearest way to deal with them forever. Everything is subject to change.

When working with Yi, while I do have views and perspectives, I like to see myself as very much 'Unconsciously Incompetent' every time I sit down at the table to hold a conversation. It's like 'I don't even know what I don't know',

Like Lao Tzu, I could do with at least another 50 years of study and then I might begin to get a bit more of an idea about how it all slots together. Sounds a bit like you 29-ish perspective of where I'm at :).

I'm wondering, have you made a cast in relation to the question 'What is the meaning of a hexagram without moving lines?'?

Out of curiosity, I'd be interested to see, if you feel able to take up the invitation and are willing to share, whether your cast features aspects or influences of maths coming into the equation for you.

Take Care.
