I just had to share what happened today.

I have a conversation with a staff member that is supposed to take place today so I ask the Iching this morning: What should I keep in mind to best navigate the conversation with this staff member today?

I got 47 unchanging, which as said in the image from Hillary's book: The lake water has all drained away into the stream below. Where there might have been a sparkling centre of vitality, communication and exchange, there is no water left - no energy for communication.

I get to work and there's an email waiting for me from this staff member. They aren't coming in today because they have no water at their home, their well may have run dry, and they are waiting for a guy to come by to confirm what's going on. They are dreading the answer because they might have to drill deeper to hit water.

47UC was literal!!

I've had answers too that were literal, where the words in the text matched the actual situation and also too, where the Image, the hexagram Image* showed me the solution - which I first discovered afterwards.

Thanks for sharing. My sense is the Yi can be predictive (omens and auguries), and it can also describe the situation we're asking about, and also give advice about the same - sometimes all at the same time!

Here you've described the Yi being literal; perhaps like 'seeing into the future'. I wonder, however, if it's 'advice' about the meeting still holds true?
One translation of Hex. 47's text includes, " .... There will be complaints, not to be heeded." (Which I can also imagine as 'complaints not being heeded'. (Rutt)
Another translation of Hex. 47 says, " .... there is talk but it is not believed." (Field)

So, is this one aspect of your conversation (which has been postponed, but I assume will still happen): that there are some communication issues you need to discuss, an issue (or issues) between you and this staff member?

Looking at 47's trigrams (three-line figures), here you have trigrams Lake above Water. Lake might represent your staff person, who is pleasant, but may not want to hear what you have to say - if they think or assume it's something bad or negative (e.g. 'talk not believed'); in this scenario you are lower trigram Moving Water: you want to "get down to it", and discuss some issues that you feel are important, but may be 'scary' or difficult to navigate.

Without passing judgement or blame (on either of you), perhaps this is the dynamic you need to be aware of to "best navigate the conversation". There may be a lot of fear here (even unconscious): the staff person may be fearful of what you want to tell them, and you may have a fear of not being heard (or of being misunderstood)?

So, some advice I see - to help you navigate your way through this - is that you should be clear what it is you want to say, and also be gentle and patient, knowing that this may be a 'conversation' or an issue that will take time to complete or resolve.

I hope some of this 'hits' the mark' (as they say) and is of some use to you.

Best, D
