So - how is 42.6 explaining what it actually means to let go of the past? I think it is important to look ahead and move forward, especially to mentally let go of people from very long ago who seem to still be in my aura or whatever, but in practical, day to day terms, what does it mean?

I imagined the following:

Everything that you have considered at length over these years, all the various angles of exploration on how to make things better and get out of these hard times has already been done and there is nothing more to consider, additionally, that could influence you to a better way out.
You already know all that, but because you consider it for a long time, you are stuck with this clear vision that you created for yourself, full of expectations, many of which are difficult to achieve without help, and with the torment of realizing this as well.
So how do you get out of this vicious cycle?
Reduce this "mental world and the influences created in your way of living" to something as pragmatic as simply living one day at a time, with simple and concrete actions...

...start simply with "what is the minimum possible action, which I can definitely start doing things now that help me free myself from this mental prison?"

...a simple "I'm going to get out of this state" by doing a simple, minimal, daily routine, in a consistent and physical way that is a daily experience of something that frees me from this rhythm of "a state of searching for a better, never-ending solution".

This would be what I would say to myself, imagining myself in your situation. :)

To me line 6 means confusion because one is not accepting the situation as it is. This fact can also leads others to not support your goals so I think the advice is about rethinking the situation with no false illutions but as it is and start from there.

Maybe a useful memorizing tip: I was just noticing how 42.6 no Increase leads to 43. Deciding (also known as Breakthrough) with the Image advising the Noble One distributes riches to teach those below. So the story line seems to be saying if you 42. Increase or hang on to more stuff (or memories) beyond what is useful to you, it just leads to a pile of clutter and then having to 43. decide what to keep and what to pass on.
So in this case perhaps it‘s saying letting go of the past means recognizing how there’s no benefit to hanging on to it and also it may be helpful to make it a conscious decision, like you say to yourself, “I decide to let that go.”
If 43. with its image advising to “distribute riches to teach those below” has anything to add, perhaps you can think of all this as having been a Useful Learning Experience.

Incidentally, I think having a very compelling goal to be heading towards is a great help when it comes to letting go. My sister accomplished a great deal in her too short life and I think her secret was if she saw something wasn’t going to work out she didn’t dwell on it and immediately put her attention on something else. For example one time she thought I might like to go some place with her and called me practically in tears begging me to come. When I told her I wasn’t up for it I was surprised at how easily she then dropped the subject and without pause changed her focus.

Anyway, remember, “Living well is the best revenge!”
