Working through the BEGINNERS' COURSE - I was drawn to the combination questions of, 1) What is my calling, and, 2) What are my unique gifts.

I am about to be 61 and have struggled with these 2 questions my whole life. I've thought about graduate school and all sorts of other things. I've tried a lot and while I learned some lessons (sort of) I do not feel as though I've ever connected to my "calling" or ever felt as if I was connect to my unique gifts or what I was meant to do.

So, at the end of the course when I read the section on GROWTH and saw these 2 questions I decided to ask Yi.

Asking Yi, "What is my calling?", resulted in 11.1 to 46.
Asking Yi, "What are my unique gifts?", resulted in 56 uc.

My feelings at thoughts about 11.1 to 46? Good fortune and Setting out to bring order, good fortune. As the primary hexagram - I feel as though I'm way out in the deep end with interpretation. Is this simply the subject of the reading, or lesson, meaning that I am looking for good fortune? And then the related hexagram of 46, what its about for me? 46 - Pushing upward? On one hand I feel as if I'm interpreting this as a positive thing because that's the kind of "answer" about my calling I want from Yi.

Then, asking the second question - What are my unique gifts? I received hexagram 56 uc.

This one really has me stumped. The sojourner? The Wanderer? My unique gift is that I am a sojourner? How on earth do I interpret 56uc when it comes to asking Yi what are my unique gifts? My unique gift is never really ever staying in one place and "staying away from home?"

The BEGINNERS'S course does say if asking these 2 questions - "can bring an extraordinary release of energy"

Did I go too far too fast?

Is is not a good idea to ask 2 questions separately but together - and - post it this way?

Asking Yi, "What is my calling?", resulted in 11.1 to 46.
11 <> 46
'Pervading' through 'Ascending the Sacred Mountain'

Your calling, might be something like, to connect to and spread your wisdom through service to others especially by demonstrating the way forward through each of your small, modest and humble achievements.

11.1 - your purpose is still bubbling up, not yet fully formulated. You need to take clear and decisive action to move things forward. It will be advantageous by doing this without being so hard on yourself.
Asking Yi, "What are my unique gifts?", resulted in 56 uc.
56 Quest - a time of wandering and living apart has been and is necessary for your gifts to be truly honed.

Your unique gifts allow you, when used effectively, to bring together small pieces of information from disparate thoughts, subjects or events in a way that allows matters to be seen more clearly and so understood in a more balanced way. Your gifts when deeply utilised generate meaning and foretell of good fortune.

... or there might be other interpretations that resonate more closely with you.

Good Luck

Hexagram 11 in the I Ching is named T'ai or Peace. The first line of this hexagram is stressed, indicating that there may be some obstacles or challenges in your path that need to be overcome in order to achieve peace or harmony.

Hexagram 46, Shêng or Pushing Upward, is the transformed hexagram that results from changing the first line of Hexagram 11. It represents a time of progress, growth, and upward movement, suggesting that you are on the right path to discovering your calling, but it may require some additional effort and perseverance to manifest your dreams.

The hexagrams suggest that you need to focus on building a solid foundation for yourself and cultivating inner peace and stability, before you can successfully pursue your life's calling.

Remember that the I Ching is a guide, not a fortune-teller, and the ultimate outcome depends on your own actions and decisions. By maintaining a sense of inner calm and seeking to align your actions with your highest values and aspirations, you have the potential to achieve meaningful growth and fulfillment in your life.

Hexagram 56 in the I Ching is called Lu or The Wanderer. It represents a time of transition and movement, suggesting that you may be on a journey of self-discovery and exploration.

The hexagram encourages you to wander and explore in order to discover your unique gifts and talents. It suggests that you need to step outside of your comfort zone and explore new opportunities, experiences, and perspectives. By doing so, you can bring a fresh perspective and new insights to your life's journey.

The hexagram also cautions against becoming too complacent or attached. It suggests that in order to discover your unique gifts, you need to remain flexible and adaptable, like a wanderer who is always open to new adventures and opportunities.

To apply this guidance to your question about your unique gifts, this could involve taking classes or workshops in areas that interest you, or volunteering for new experiences or organizations, or seeking out mentorship or guidance from those who can help you discover and develop your talents.

It's important to embrace the uncertainty and growth that comes with exploration and to remain open to new possibilities. By wandering and exploring with an open heart and mind, you may be able to uncover your unique talents and gifts and find your true calling.

I hope this helps.

In general, I would say that with this kind of question it might be wise to give yourself time to let the answer sink in. For example, look at it again in a few days and then again in a month. Try to translate the images used to the situation, etc.

Remember a hexagram is much more than its name. Read the text of The Judgment and the Image. How can you apply them to your question and/or situation? What resonates and what doesn't. Are there words or parts of phrases that stand out for you. In a sense, an oracle's answer is a process. First you see or understand the superficial answer and then the layers underneath. Since your calling does not change you could do with this answer for years and discover something new in it each time.

I do not pretend to be able to interpret from your answers what your calling or your unique gifts are. So consider the following more as ideas that might be helpful in interpreting your answer yourself.

Asking Yi, "What is my calling?", resulted in 11.1 to 46.
H11 Earth over Heaven
In this hexagram, the 2 primal forces are at work. Trigram Earth as the ultimate yin and Heaven as the ultimate yang. There is also perfect balance, Earth moving down and Heaven moving up. When yin and yang work together in this way there is perfect order and balance.
However, this also means that "work" must be done to maintain order and balance. When there is perfect order and balance, only a small thing needs to happen to disrupt it.
You can see this happening with the first line.
The text of this line says "When reeds of grass are pulled up, Other roots of the same kind come with them." This brings to mind the pulling up of weeds. So there must be constant (inner) maintenance, the text also indicates that during this maintenance other things come up that can be removed.
The related hexagram is H46 Ascending, progressing step by step.
The theme of this hexagram is related to the text of the 1st line. H46 is Wind/Wood below and Earth above. As an image, you can think of germinated seeds making their way through the earth to the surface. Only when it reaches the surface do you know if it is a weed or a something else. H46 also shows that when you weed inner weeds you move forward step by step and know how to maintain balance.
Asking Yi, "What are my unique gifts?", resulted in 56 uc.
H56 is the hexagram of the traveler, the person who travels through unknown territory and seeks his destination. The lines of this hexagram show how to deal with the situations you find yourself in as you seek your destination. A traveler, on the one hand, has to adapt to new circumstances, he has to constantly renew himself, so to speak, and find out what situation he finds himself in next. On the other hand, he must remain himself, adapting to a situation must not be at the expense of his authenticity.

I hope this is helpful and brings you to new insights.
As always, take what resonates and leave the rest ;)

Working through the BEGINNERS' COURSE - I was drawn to the combination questions of, 1) What is my calling, and, 2) What are my unique gifts.
I don't think a great deal of these questions in the beginners course, I mean why is it assumed a person must have unique gifts ? Life is for living, your life is your calling, your gift is your life. I do find when people believe there must be a calling at least 80% are left feeling as if they didn't quite make it. I think it's very few people actually who have a very clear sense of calling.

I think Yi has answered you philosophically, addressing your whole life. It's a journey, a road you've travelled and cannot be assessed and packaged into 'calling' and 'unique gift'...

Then, asking the second question - What are my unique gifts? I received hexagram 56 uc.
You're travelling through life itself is I think what it's saying. You aren't especially at home in your life or circumstances and that's fine because you are on your way somewhere. This life is temporary, this circumstance is temporary and a traveller isn't settling long enough to be paying attention to honing in on 'unique gifts'. I mean if you think of an actual traveller what are they doing? Their main objective is to keep moving on, to not get stuck in the environment where they stay. I think honing specific gifts isn't the task of the traveller and so I have the sense this cast is asking you not to box yourself in or give yourself labels of 'unique gift' and so on.

The BEGINNERS'S course does say if asking these 2 questions - "can bring an extraordinary release of energy"
Really? Is this Hilary's beginners course you are talking about ?
