I asked this question with the idea that if reality is a shared dream we are all creating together, just what is the story we’re co creating here? I got hexagram 45. Gathering Together and it’s image of people coming together for mutual benefit and it’s advice that the wise one puts aside weapons and tools in order to meet the unforeseen.

Hi rosada, what a nice image for co-creating! And also the two trigrams are nice. The principe of reality, earth, as a lower trigram, and the lake, exchange and communication, as the upper trigram.

Hello Rosada. A few ideas here ....

We usually find lakes and marshes in the low places, but here Lake is raised about the Earth, and here there is the idea that this is done by people, perhaps the idea of the many hands working for a common happiness.

Interestingly, the image text suggests putting aside weapons, and tools and utensils. Weapons I can understand, but tools? It seems to me that actually we should be picking up tools, and implements and utensils as a way of making ready - after all, don't we need to use these tools to do the work of raising up Lake?

But what if this is referring to our inner work instead? So instead of picking up tools and implements - if we lived in ancient China - we would be approaching our temples, making sacrifices and offerings.

And in these here modern times, what would this 'approaching temple' / 'sacrifice' / 'making offerings' look like?

We might also consider: what danger is there in focusing on the external instead of our inner work - as in picking up arms instead of approaching one's temple? And do we need to be conerned about forsaking our innner work too soon, where we instead find ourselves saying, 'there's work to be done, but it's out there!'?

I'm not sure of the relevance or tie-in to your reading, but that's what's come to mind so far.

Best, D.

What a great question and what a great response from Yi !

I'd query the sentiment you craft of "the wise one puts aside weapons and tools in order to meet the unforeseen". To me 'putting aside' seems a bit too severe an action. I like more the ideas of 'repairing his weapons to guard against unexpected happenings' (Huang) or eliminating old impulses to resort to arms through reponding rather than reacting (Karcher)
Not so much discard the old weapons and tools but re-imagine them to give them a new sharpness and hold them in reserve to meet the requirements of the new times. I'd agree with Freedda that these could just as well be inner tools and weapons as well as outside materials.
We have to first bring ourself together (approach our own temple ) before we can create with others a unity in the world around us.

Unchanging hexagram would suggest to me that this co-creating may still have a way to go for full completion.

"Putting aside" is from Hilary (at least I think it is..better check..) . I read it as simply meaning it's smart to have weapons and tools put aside some place like in the garage so you'll have them when you need them - or to loan when someone at the Gathering needs them.

Maybe 45. unchanging also is describing what a shared dream is, without going into detail about any one specific dream.. Hmm..maybe should ask "What is the group co-creation for the pandemic?"
