53.2 in Wilhelm is "The wild goose gradually draws near the cliff. Eating and drinking in peace and concord. Good fortune". Wilhelm speaks of insecurities being overcome. This could mean different cultures coming more to an accommodation with each other following the initial shock we are still experiencing of globalisation? Wilhelm also mentions "a man does not want to keep his good luck for himself only, but is ready to share it with others", suggesting a mutuality.

53.3 is "The wild goose gradually draws near the plateau. The man goes forth and does not return. The woman carries a child but does not bring it forth. Misfortune. It furthers one to fight off robbers". Perhaps this means the world actually wants some cultures or civilisation to die out or be "still born" in order that the flower it really wants to be born in the world can grow in its place? Wilhelm writes "if we do not let things develop quietly but plunge of our own choice into a struggle, misfortune results". This may be advocating a certain cultural conservatism in relation to my question? It speaks of keeping to "the law of natural development". Also 53.3 may be warning against war by vigorously keeping to our own positions - that this lack of mutuality and the clashes of cultures may prevent the flower that the world wants to be born from making its growth in the earth? At the same time it mentions the need to fight off robbers.

The resultant hexagram 59 is "dissolution". Wilhelm speaks of gentleness breaking up and dissolving a blockage. "Religious forces are needed to overcome the egotism that divides men". "Just as, when a boat is crossing a great stream, all hands must unite in a joint task".

I would be interested to hear of anyone's readings on this.

59 is usually translated as "dispersion" with 40 being "dissolution".

I think your question displays bias which you have not acknowledged in the interpretation, specifically that there is only one flower to come forth.

I like your interpretation very much, but I would suggest trying to interpret 53, 2, 3 as a comment on your bias rather than as a projection of the future to gain more understanding.

Thank you.

Here we start with 53 - Gradual Progress - where we have Mountain's stillness combining with Wind gently exploring and seeking direction.

But with two lower moving lines (2, 3), Mountain has become more like a closed-off room, or like the borders of nations, so instead of seeking direction, we are closed (or closing) in on ourselves, we are relying too much on the past and are not open to new possibilites, new directions. Here gradual progress has ground to a halt!

The lines are offering us two pieces of advice to address this sitiuation: first, that we - as individuals and the collective 'we': e.g. families, neighborhoods, towns, cities, clans, tribes - should be celebrating and seeking to communicate with one another - 'wild geese drinking and eating and honking and honking!' (53.2) But at the same time, with this comes the reality of the world's dangers and setbacks, and as guardians, we need to 'guard against predators' (53.3) - along with rejoying and communicating.

The response (59) - what we might call a new paradigm, or 'the flower that wants to be born into this world' - is the idea of Scattering. In some ways it feels like the opposite of 'guarding against predators' in that we should consider opening ourselves up and become less solid - instead of saying 'we are only this' country, or 'we are only this' religion, etc.

It means exposing ourselves to what is dangerous and fearful within ourselves (but not to expose ourselves to a virus!); and we do this as a way of becoming more awake, of learning from being exposed, and to not hold these things at a distance - like we've erected a border wall!

I was just reading an article in the NY Times this morning about a young Palestinian peace activist who has been arrested by Hamas, the group who governs the Gaza Strip - for having a Zoom meeting with Jewish Israeli peace activist. His crime: 'inciting normalization'. I mention this, not to call out Hamas or the Palestinians in particular, but as an example of when these borders we have created become prisions.

Best, D

What is the flower that wants to be born in the world? 53.2,3 > 59

Hi bologna_tendra
That's a deep question!! I have refered to Huang and Karcher mostly while forming the words here.

The flower that wants to be born into the world is Developing Gradually through Dispersing. It is encouraging growth through lightening; improving the standards and awareness of the people, although there is still much that has to be done (53). This reorganisation is promoted through celebrating the joys of life and through reaping what is sown (53.2). It balances through the nature of things not always being successful, or unwise ventures not being born. In this way the flower strengthens itself inwardly(53.3) thus reinforcing the nourishment of it's traditional connections (59).

...or it may mean nothing like this at all

.... It is encouraging growth through lightening ....
My_Key, I'm curious what you mean here?

Is it 'lightening' as in "to lighten one's load" or get rid of stuff, or make it more light-weight? Or, is it to act through 'lighning' - to act as Thunder/Lightning might: quickly, suddenly, in a shocking way?

One thought I had about this idea of dispersion (though I dont know fully what it means or how it applies ....): with Dispersion, we have small water droplettes being picked up and dispersed, scattered by the wind. But they in fact weigh the same as when they were part of the larger Waters, but they seem - and act - lighter because they are more spread out over a wider area. By way (weight, ha-ha) of anology. A a tone of bricks seems heavy, but a ton's worth of water droplettes we don't even notice.

My thoughts were along the lines of 'lightening'. Not really in the sense of 'getting rid of stuff', as that can be more of a dumping action rather than a Gradual Progress. Perhaps I was thinking more of a making things less dense way of lightening: growing through tilled earth rather than compacted or walking through water rather than treacle. The hexagram talks of a marriage procession and taking incremental steps each one abiding in inner stillness but with a penetrating wind from the outer world carrying with it correctness, power and virtue towards the goal of marriage. No lightning bolts just"careful and constant work on one's own moral development" as Wilhelm puts it.

Dispersion certainly has the meaning of distributing things over a wide area, or ,and I have no idea if the Ancient Chinese alchemists used it also as a noun to mean, a mixture of one substance dispersed in another medium (like oil in water), so I guess this could equally apply to water in air.

It's like that old brain teazer "What weighs more a ton of bricks or a ton of of feathers?" Goose feather of course !! :)

What you have written about water droplets reminds me of the Rumi quote :
“You are not a drop in the ocean. You are the entire ocean in a drop.”
Good Luck
