Hi everybody

First of all: what a great site this already was en is even moreso now. My compliments to the improvements.

I have a burning question and really need some help with the answer. I asked: what kind of job would fit me? And got 6 (conflict) with line 5 moving.
My first impuls was: a mediator in conflicts. But then, it seems line 5 is more like a judge who makes a final decision, then a mediator who tries to get both parties on one line. Or is it?
I have no Law education, so something legal is out of the question.
I'm a psychologist by training, so I was also considering a meaning like relationship-counsellor, but still this feels more like mediation than taking a decision myself.

Any input (also possible other job options) are welcome, I'm a bit blank on what road to take careerwise. Have a nice job now as something of a social worker in Psychiatry, but I'd like to move on to something else in a couple of years. And the whole topic is something I feel quite anxious about, so I'm consciously trying to put myself to think about it.

Sooooo: please, any ideas?

Thanks, love Femke

Hi Femke,

I wonder if you are overthinking this.

6 always conjures up an image of a civil suit. (I think there was a discussion here once on the difference between 6 and 21, where 21 can be thought of as criminal justice.)

The image of 6 is heaven above water. I don't think the heaven image is restricted to someone handing down a final decision, but rather, someone who's offering an unbiased perspective. This sounds like a mediator or counsellor of sorts.

The interesting thing is 6.5 leads to 64. I always ponder over that. It sounds to me that it is still up to the parties involved (e.g., people seeking your service) to resolve their issue.

What do you think?

Hi Philippa

Thanks for your reply.

As to 64, this hexagram is full of opportunities, isn't it? For me it's also something to ponder over as well. In this case, a new start, new possibilities, with a yet unsure outcome, seems quite appropriate. And your suggestion that it's up to the ones seeking counselling, it seems right.

It's helpful to hear your opinion about the Heaven image, this trigram is kind of "new" to me (as in getting it in answers), I'm not so familiar with it yet. I mean, I've read theories about it but don't "feel" it yet, you know? So it's nice to hear that you think it's also giving an objective opinion, not only judging. So do you think it's both giving advice and trying to get people to meet each other in the middle?
It's funny, I realize now that my image of the job of mediator or counsellor involves a lot of "trying", trying to get people to see each other's side of view, trying to get them to meet halfways. The same goes for counselling. But actually, I've been thinking that I might be trying to hard, taking to much responsibility. So a bit more steadiness, just giving an opinion and then letting the others decide whether to use it or not, might be helpful in any case.
I'm doubting about the kind of counselling 6 might imply, for instance a longer therapy. I doubt about it because it lacks wind, patient searching for the truth, finding hidden emotions. Also I feel the role of a long-term therapist might not be consistent with Heaven, because it's so powerful and dominant. What do you think?

"I have a burning question and really need some help with the answer. I asked: what kind of job would fit me? And got 6 (conflict) with line 5 moving."

Well, you said it's a burning question for you, so there's a possibility that the 'contention' that 6.5 talks about refers not to the type of job that would fit you, but to how you should proceed with your search for it. Argue the case, in other words, as if you were contending in a court of law. For me, Hex 6 often images a situation in which I have some sense of grievance or a situation in which something needs to be debated. And sometimes that debate is with myself. So in your case, how would you argue your case for a job that you think would suit you?

However, there's a real possibility that the Yi's being very direct in its answer, and it's telling you that you'd thrive in an occupation which involves contention of some sort. Well, rather than sitting there trying to brainstorm all the jobs that involve conflict of some sort (ho! that would take some time!) maybe a better approach would be to start actually looking for jobs that appeal to you and jobs that come up in the newspaper and stuff. And then when you find out what's involved in that job, ask yourself if there's contention involved. If the answer's yes, then it's worth a try. In other words, find the job first, and then see how well it fits the Yi's suggestion.

Hi Femke. May this will help you also....

6 Sung - Conflict
6.0 - The Judgement

There is conflict due to one or all of the following factors. The person is focused on the fact that she/he has reasoned correctly, but failed to see that the premise was wrong or unfounded (the logical but not true syndrome). The person's emotions or desires are ruling the thought processes; therefore, he/she is being irrational. The person is in the habit of speaking without carefully thinking things through. The person's Qi (life force) is unbalanced towards liver yang excess, and is therefore argumentative, contrary, unreceptive, etc.
Although it is important to resolve the issue in question, the counsel is aimed at the cause of the conflict which resides in the character flaws listed above.

It will be necessary to seek the assistance of a wise and impartial arbiter. The focus, however, must be more on the character flaws that are fueling the conflict, than on the issues in contention. Given the nature of these people, even the diviner must be cautious in dealing with them.

2. Divine Law Meditation

6.5 - Line 5
There can be found a person who has the strength, clarity and sense of justice to serve as an arbiter. You can trust this person to resolve the conflict in a fair manner.

64 Wei Chi - Before Completion

64.0 - The Judgement
This hexagram is received when the shaping factors for success are at the last preparatory stage. One is not quite ready to undertake one's project or commit one's self. The emphasis at this point is to make sure that one's resources, infrastructural elements are all working together. For example, if you received this hexagram for your career, it might mean that you may need to pay attention to diet, exercise, sleep, study skills, and diversion in order to succeed in your studies.
In addition, there is a need for a strong motivating and unifying element. This is the role of establishing the goal with the utmost clarity. Success is at hand only if the shaping factors are all obeyed and coordinated.
Recommended Reports

2. Kidney Tonification
3. Divine Law Meditation

I think with the Conflict hexagram coming up, whatever field you are trying to go in you have to find a real expert in that field to get your advice from. Someones who's knowledge about that area is beyond the common knowledge. I hope this helps. Peace.

Hi Dobro and Cassius

Thank you both also very much for taking the time and effort to write these responses.
It is very interesting to read your interpretations on hexagram 6. I think it is quite a hard hexagram to look at objectively, because of the stress that conflict brings along. It tends to bias your view.
The thing is, I asked I Ching not how to handle my career, I asked for a suggested field of work. The reason for this is that there are many areas that I find interesting and I have a hard time choosing. I've done a lot of research (both internally and externally). I've also been to a job counsellor and organisational advisor (one of the possible jobs).
However, I'll surely keep your interpretations in mind and maybe I will realize at some point that I should after all apply the hexagram to myself rather than (or on top of) my future employment options.
Thanks!

Femke
