this is often viewed as one of the worst possible castings in the whole I Ching and albeit I do not want to buy that some Hexagrams are negative I do know some lines are just warnings or depicting a lost cause or something bad. This is one of it.

What do you think about it?

Could it represent people travelling having its lodge (body?) burned (inflamed by the virus?) ?

Could it say humanity is basically screwed?

Or maybe the virus will burn itself down?

Shaughnessy: In traveling burning his lodging, and losing his young servant; determination is dangerous.

Cleary (1): Burning the lodge on a journey, you lose your attendants. Even if righteous there is danger.

It doesn’t sound good at all, I agree

its the same line someone got when asking the effects of climate change on humanity

the main problem is doctors still writing on social media that standard flu kills more people every year, as saying that coronavirus is just a mild kind of flu.
We will see!

One meaning of 56.3 "burning down the Inn" is a way of describing loss of people because of unethical business practices. The Chinese communist secrecy is certainly going to cause them loss of many servants of the state and damage their business and business relationships. Now the world knows being too dependent economically on a country like China is dangerous in more ways than one.
It also means burning your bridges, your ships... That kind of describes quarantines, and also being in a position where there is no turning back to how things were.

I believe that someone created the virus so as to lose some servants. A careless behavior that creates great mistakes. Many people die. However, I believe hexagram 35 is auspicious for progress. Fingers crossed.

A friend says 56 is the new land of the new virus. Humanity is treating the new servant (science) badly, dismissing their suggestion. If things are not properly conducted, there is a real risk of losing one’s home.

Two days ago I asked the Iching: what is the real danger in Coronavirus? (since I'm not yet sure if the fear surrounding it is proportionate to the danger).
I got 52.2 leading to 18.
LiSe says about this line: "Do everything in your own pace, not letting yourself get whipped up. Fate is always watching if you are still on your own road, in your own timing. If you leave it, it can make you come down hard. "
Am I wrong if I think that the real danger in this situation is to lose ourselves because of fear?
This would make sense to my question: I asked what the danger is, and the danger may be in keeping still because of fear.

Talking about 56.3, I find Confucious/Legge interpretation interesting: "By burning down his lodging-house he himself also suffers harm. When as a stranger, he treats those below him as the line indicates, the right relation between master and servant is lost."
Maybe this is what could happen between states and citizens: unpopular, drastic and arrogant decisions will undermine the balance in the relationship between them.

I think it's worth noting that the largest outbreak in Europe is in Italy, home to the Five Star Movement, and to a government that has had a bunch of anti-vaccination wack-jobs as their leaders. It is only recently that this trend was reversed, but only after Italy had major measles outbreaks, and "... new law was passed to raise Italy's plummeting vaccination rates from below 80% to the World Health Organisation's 95% target." Let's hope they don't have the same attitude towards using a coronavirus vaccine if one is developed.

Cruise ships and hotels could be the "Inns" that go bankrupt because people are afraid to travel and "young servants" could be the vaccinations people refused to take or that don't work. 35. Progress could mean that after the initial crisis though a successful vaccine is created.

No one is afraid to travel though, and people have kept visiting China even after the virus broke out. People keep traveling, so the virus will spread all over the world in little time, until the heat will kill it.

Also, not being vaccinated has nothing to do with getting the virus: it’s a new one for everybody, your having done your measles thing has no connection with being immune to corona virus. What about Japan, South Korea and Iran? Are they all against vaccination?
Also, the non vaccination trend only concerns children. Before the internet was created everyone got vaccinated. Yet non vaccinated children do not get the virus, while vaccinated elderly people do. Which pretty much demonstrates that whatever previous vaccination you have done, it won’t save you.

your having done your measles thing has no connection with being immune to corona virus.
Actually, it wasn't my measles thing, but Italy's. And you're right, one may not have anything to do with the other.

But then again - acting as my president might - I couldn't help but notice the syncronicity here: Italy's government goes anit-vacc, then gets large outbreaks of a virus? But really, I was just taking an opportunity to trash the stupidity and short-sidedness of the anti-vacc'ers.

My friend says that 35 is perfectly in line with coronavirus dying out with the heat ...
From the New Scientist:

Will the covid-19 outbreak .... fade as the northern hemisphere warms up? This has been suggested by some researchers and repeated by some political leaders, including ... Donald Trump, but we simply don’t know if it is the case.

“We absolutely don’t know that,” says Trudie Lang at the University of Oxford. “I keep asking virologist colleagues this and nobody knows. So when you hear people say the weather will warm up and it will just disappear, it’s a very unhelpful generalisation,” she says.

This is essentially what Trump said on 10 February. “The heat, generally speaking, kills this kind of virus,” he told a meeting. “A lot of people think that goes away in April as the heat comes in.”

.... But then again, if Trump is saying it, and your friend is saying it, and the Yi agrees with them, then it must be true!

Cruise ships ....
Now cruise ships and large numbers of people getting ill, that dredges up a few memories .... a few years ago, what did they call it before they figured out it was a bacterial infection .... Legionnaires' disease?

A Chinese friend of mine is feeding me with info and I tend to think she knows best as they have quite some experience with these flus.
I didn’t know Trump had said the same thing. We don’t get to know much of what he says unfortunately - or fortunately?! 😀

but she said that SARS disappeared as soon as it got warmer. I told this to my I Ching expert friend, told him about this cast, and he saw a connection between this theory and 35.
Maybe you can see it too, I am not so advanced in my I Ching studies so I don’t know.

I think the problem is that some Italian politicians keep saying coronavirus is nothing more than a standard flu, and only people in their 80s die, so no one is bothering really. Someone wanted to check all people coming from China but the idea was considered not politically correct, so people kept going to work and doing things as usual even after being to China. We will see what happens.

75% of people getting it are males, only 25% females which I find inexplicable.

In Italy there has been a couple of Chinese tourists who travelled all along the north part of the country before they discovered they had the virus. Now we also know that there are people who don’t show the symptoms. This shows some facts:
1. It is difficult to blame anyone for the outbreak
2. If we don’t know how many people got the virus and got along well, the % of people dying because of the disease can’t be accurate.
3. It’s really difficult to know who infected who.

In Italy there has been a lot of panic going on. This is why they are trying to calm down the population. And we all should calm down. It’s not a flu, it’s worst, and we should behave accordingly, but it’s not Ebola neither. Many measures have been taken. One of them is a big increase in checking if people has the disease. Italy has done more than 100x times more tests than other European countries. I think they are doing all they can and maybe even too much. What are other countries doing? Sadly, just waiting! Everyone waited doing the tests. Maybe every country should have taken more before, instead of waking up one day and discover that there are hundreds of people already sick all around them.

You seem to be saying that it’s wrong not be scared, and I heard many people saying that: be scared, you fool! Well, if we all have to be that scared, I really don’t get why they waited until the last moment for doing more exams, and still are waiting. I refuse to panick just because one day they say to calm down and wait and the other that it’s a disaster. I choose the middle way and I think we all should.

Well - In the SARS outbreak of 2004, the coronavirus killed 9.6% of those infected, including a huge 50% of everyone over 60 infected. No new cases of SARS have been seen since 2004.
Currently, there are 81,134 reported cases of coronavirus but China is certainly underreporting. The important stat on deaths is still in flux. See the chart attached, as of Feb 26, 2020 the death rate is 8% in closed cases while 18% of active cases are in serious or critical condition.
Given the current death rate, with a potential to be worse than in the past serious countermeasures are certainly warranted to contain the outbreak. The bright side is in 2004 the SARS outbreak was successfully quashed, and we should be able to do it again. .
(Current stats from https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/, historical SARS 2004 data from wikipedia.)

Well, 2 days ago BBC reports:

“The proportion of infected people who die from Covid-19 appears to be between 1% and 2%, although the WHO cautions that the mortality rate is not known yet.”

Source:

Let’s remember that in Wuhan people died also because of a bad healthcare system, a bad approach to the disease and a severe pollution of the air. Let’s stay vigilant, let’s be cautious, and responsible, and try not to underrate it, but also not to panick, because we don’t know enough about it.

I'm not saying anything, you can be scared or not scared, choose your own way, what suits you best.

I was only saying that if there are a lot of cases in Italy now, it is not because people are not vaccinated against measles, it is because they keep traveling as all people in Europe. I am into some Facebook groups about traveling and young people from all over Europe keep posting their pictures and planning on their next trip. Complaining about traveling restrictions and asking each other what is the best way or route to get where they want to get and avoid blockage. That's a fact and that's why the virus will keep spreading.

People on social media keep writing that the WHO is lying and this is all a devised evil method to kill the markets, some people don't even believe this virus exists, and they are writing it loud and clear.
I honestly don't see any panic, I see annoyed people all over Europe.

I guess in 2020 you can't stop the world, and if people find it impossible to stay still for two or three weeks, they will just pay the consequences of it. I myself got on a bus recently, I wanted to drive but I don't own any car and my mother wouldn't lend me hers (she probably felt driving more dangerous than coronavirus :D ).

According to what I know they didn't die because of a bad health system but because hospitals are not able to host everyone. Which is why they are trying to contain the virus: if too many people fall ill at the same time, it will be a disaster. Imagine if Wuhan had not been shut down: the virus would have spread across all China, with unimaginable consequences.

You are right, but I just took a look at any italian online newspaper and this is what I have seen: in Italy and all areas surrounding the north of the country there are a lot of people panicking, empty streets, schools and museums shut down, so as any public event. There are villages controlled by military forces, where people can’t go in nor out. Grocery markets are under attack and people try to buy all they can. All the media aren't doing much to calm the situation. This is an overreaction, in my opinion!
Probably people in Europe aren't scared yet, but if they will have to face something like that, it could be difficult not to be! And I said what I said before because this fear scares me more than the virus... Probably what scares the most is the way they are treating it.
I can't blame anyone who has lost their trust in the WHO and other institutions. These are the times we are living in!
As you said, it’s just a matter of time but maybe simply there aren’t enough exams done. Of course I hope that people will react wisely and rationally!
I agree that we can’t stop the world and I think that it wouldn’t even be right!

Anyway, I was speaking about fear because you seemed disappointed by the fact that some are saying that it's not much more than a flu. I don't say that we have to underrate the problem but if experts say something like that, I hope they know what they are telling.

Getting back to the original question and hexagrams...
What would be the final of the coronavirus epidemic for humanity? 56.3 - 35.

56.3
Wanderer burns down the rest house.
Loses his young helper.
Constancy brings danger.

There was a safe space, there was help to be had; the sojourner destroys one and loses the other. Distruction by fire: as if he's tried to light a huge hearth in a small hut. Maybe the light of mutual awareness and connection or the blaze of ambition, has been stoked too hard.

35.
Prospering, Prince Kang used a gift of horses to breed a multitude.
He mated them three times in one day.
The noble one's own light shines in her de.
-Hilary
----
Okay, I originally saw the "rest house" or "inn" as Wilhelm calls it, as referring to the various places where wanders, travelers stay and the virus and fear of the virus certainly has had an effect on travel not only with people being afraid to travel out and afraid to allow people from foreign places to travel in but also on the stock market crashing for cruise lines, airplanes and anything associated with the travel market. I can see it also as "rest houses" hospitals not being able to handle the flood of patients and "young helpers" as doctors and nurses unable to cope. However, in the bigger picture as to the effect on humanity I agree, perhaps the "rest house" means the physical body burning up. I also originally thought "young helper" might mean a vaccine and although one hasn't even been created yet, I saw this reference as meaning somehow a vaccine, if and when it is created would not be sufficiently effective, whether because people wouldn't take it or it wouldn't get to them in time or whatever. Now I think it might mean one's own antibodies and they not being able to combat the virus adequately. So basically 56.3 describing a horrific problem.
Next to consider 35.Progress. This is an optimistic hexagram so it seems to be saying that while ultimately humanity will not be wiped out, people will continue to reproduce and life goes on, but given that the hexagram leading up to it, 56.3, is so dark is this saying that Progress will be limited only to those who can manage taking responsibility for their own care? Does "the noble one's own light shinning" mean survival of the fittest?

There's an old adage - maybe from Native Americans,or maybe the Boy Scouts - that says it's not a good idea to shit in your own camp - near to where you sleep, eat and cook. So, looking at 56.3 more as advice (in this case, of what not to do), and less as a prediction of the future - to me it says, 'look people, you need to stop shitting in your camps ....!'

35 seems to be suggesting that we need a new attitude - the sun is rising above the earth, it's a new day, so let's starting thinking and acting in new ways, and with more clarity. For me 35's oracle text is about sharing resources as a means of having more of this expanding clarity - 'we need to work together on this one, share what we know and what tools, knowledge, and resources we have.'

Best, D.

I can't help but sharing this with you:
(I won't open a new thread as I don't require any help with the reading, I think it speaks pretty clear)
How much do I need to worry about the coronavirus? 56.5>33
The first thing I got from this is Retreat from traveling and I find it hilarious, also considering I am supposed to get on a bus or train later this week.
The line speaks of showing one's merits, getting a peasant with one arrow and therefore being awarded something; but my take here is literal.

Hi to all. I am wondering if the response is not interested in the behaviour of the illness but in the consequences for the global society. So it could be a transition towards an advance of consciousness. There is an interesting story about that but is in Italian here https://www.ilfattoquotidiano.it/20...razie-a-questa-traumatica-esperienza/5720059/ and it's about what we can learn about all this. Basically it says we can: 1) feel ourselves vulnerable and lucky enough no more a god that can do everything: 2) we are all interconnected and we can no more block the borders; 3) we are not alone but we live together and we have to think to the others; 4) we should not fall in panic; 6) we should respect nature. Ciao!

I have to make amends, because I’m not sure if the cast I was talking about in one of my previous answer in this thread was the right one. I asked “what is the real danger in Coronavirus”, and I said I got 52.2, but I remembered then, that I had also asked for an advice about how to behave with the problem of the virus and now I think this wasn’t the right answer I got. (Often I look at my web chronology to go back to some previous cast)

I’m telling you that because this is the reason why I decided to recast with the same question and this is the answer:

56.3.4.5 leading to 20, contemplation.
This result gave me the shivers, because it includes the first result AnnaP got and the result Olga Super star also got.

I now see line 3 as the economic crisis countries will have to face, stopping normal activities.
line 4 adds to the picture the danger of losing one’s gains. I see that as a warning: we could think we won a battle when we don’t have won the war yet. So the danger is also to rest in contemplation (20). What do you think?

(I also asked again for an advice and got 27.3. : don’t refuse the nurture. In my specific case, I didn’t want to go out of my house and I admit that I was scared. I live in Europe and you know the situation doesn’t sound so good. But maybe, I guess I was acting dull, refusing to meet anyone... refusing nurture)

edit: or, as Lise suggests, the danger in line 4 is that the heart, and the soul, could feel empty, because of a lack of connection, spirituality. If people
can’t stay together, join, appreciate culture, not even pray in churches because they are closed... what will happen to the soul?

35 describes a time of economic opportunity and prosperity as the context of the reading.

56.3 does not describe "a horrific situation" I don't think, rather it describes how for example soldiers might burn their ships so retreat is no longer an option, or how a person might break up with their girlfriend to get out of their comfort zone, because they have a mission or a cause and they are taking it on the road.
It's a single line. It could literally mean quarantine of nations (houses), or a recognition that we are overly dependent on China for many things, and that that is going to change and we're not going back. ( most of our antibiotics and prescription drugs are made in China.)
