What's the deal with 24?

I thought I had discovered this nifty little trick of combining The Judgement with The Image in Wilhelm. It appeared to me that The Judgement tended to tell what the situation was, and The Image advised what to do about it. Thus with hexagram 1 The Judgement is that success comes with perseverance, and so therefore The Image advises that one ought to make oneself strong and untiring so one would be able to persever. Likewise, hexagram 2 says the world is very wide and so a man is advised to have breadth of character so he can respond to all the many things of the world. But I don't get 24. The Judgement says everyone can move freely but then the advice of The Image is that everyone should stay home? Any thoughts?

I think there is no contradiction between the judgement and the image.
The idea is apparently that meeting people and socializing is fine (as indicated by the judgement) but that it is not a good time for traveling to far away places (that's what the image says). For that it's too early.

What sounds like a cool way to interpret. I'm going to try it.

Hi Rosada

Just in case the comment could be useful

There are 6 days to travel and 1 to returning (judgment); in the 6 days to travel the path is open but in the the returning day is better to close it (image)

Best wishes

Hi Rosada:

I don't see a contradiction if you look at what the hexagram is all about. You go out into the world and then you return to yourself - much like a 2 year old kid who ventures out but needs to go back to his mother to know he belongs somewhere and can refuel.

Here's some commentary I've picked up along the way:

Things cannot go beyond the extreme. When they reach the limit, they turn back to the origin. Thus, after Falling Away (#23) comes Turning Back.
Return is the stem of character. Return is small, yet different from external things. Return leads to self knowledge.

Application to character formation:
1. The light principle returns: thus the hexagram counsels turning away from the confusion of external things, turning back to one?s inner light.
2. There in the depths of the soul, one sees the Divine.
3. It is indeed only germinal, no more than a beginning, a potentiality but as such clearly to be distinguished from all objects.

Hexagram 24 is about cycles. Everything which is really lasting, moves in cycles, rather than in a line. Like Jesed says: 6 days of 'going' and a day of 'returning'. The sun goes on its journey of a year, but at midwinter returns to the point where a new year starts again. On its path, there are also fixed points, where it returns to year after year, like the equinoxes. In the same way, the moon on its road pases by quarter-moon, full moon, new moon, which mark the sundays. It is good to contemplate these points, and not to let them pass by unnoticed, because they give structure to a sea of time. That is the origin of 6 days of work and 1 day of contemplation and rest. They make time 'turn' instead of becoming a straight line, which has no lasting value.

Lise, I'm wondering if you can say more about that.(or anyone else)

hmm... lets ask the IC what 24 is about. The name details are:

24 Return (The Turning Point)
Returning

In a context of enlightenment, a new beginning, we utilise trust.

"FU : go back, turn back to the starting point; recur, reappear, come again; restore, recover, retrace; an earlier time or place. The ideogram: step and retrace a path."ERANOS p301

27-ness (basic infrastructure) is described by analogy to:

100000 (24)
100001 (27)
------
000001 (23)

so, generically it is about 'pruning' - focusing on the 'wheat', removing the chaff and in so doing coming back to the 'true'.

43-ness (where does it get its nourishment) is described by analogy to:

100000 (24)
011010 (43)
------
111010 (05)

....its nourishment is desribed by analogy to the form of 05 - there is a sense of coming back at the 'right' moment, there is a need to wait for the 'cycle' to get to the right position for one to re-enter the dynamics of things.

What ideology 'guides' 24?

101101 (30)
100000 (24)
------
001101 (56)

conditional loyalty - travels 'afar' still lead one to come back, there is an attraction to the 'true' despite distractions.

How does 24 express containment/control?

010010 (29)
100000 (24)
------
110010 (60)

The focus is on imposing standards and so limits on self; bring back the focus, remain loyal by coming back.

How does 24 express a beginning?

100000 (24)
100000 (24)
------
000000 (02)

all is potentials.

etc etc etc

PAIR dynamics:

In the binary sequence hexagram 24 pairs with hexagram 27.

This pairing reflects an overall sense of 'emptyness' which is resolved by (a) hexagram 24 and a return to the 'true' belief (integrating, re-integrating) and (b) by hungering to be filled and so grasping whatever is at hand (differentiating). This pairing also reflects filtration issues (the EARTH phase in five-phase theory) - such that 24 returns to the 'true' path (and so 'with enlightenment comes devotion') and 27 reflects the hungering that can come with this return as it can also reflect the hungering that leads to the return.

In the binary sequence hexagram 24 opposes hexagram 44.

This pair reflects issues of being drawn back to a path (24) vs being seduced away from a path (44).

At the LOCAL level we are dealing with an octet of hexagrams with the THUNDER trigram as base. In this sequence hexagram 24, the focus upon returning to the 'true' path, opposes hexagram 25, disentangling. More so, the exaggerated sense of asserting one's opinion without fear of, consideration of, consequence is reflected in a more balanced format through a 'soft' return to a 'true' belief.

In the traditional sequence hexagram 24 pairs with hexagram 23.

With this pair, just as 23 prunes, and does so from within the belief, so 24 returns to the belief. Both reflect 'coming back to'.

RETURN TO FAITH:

23 : return to the faith - through refurbishing, pruning; 23 refurbish, prune, comes out of a context described by hexagram 24 - returning

24 : return to the faith - through come back to; 24 returning comes out of a context described by hexagram 23 - pruning

In the traditional sequence hexagram 24 opposes hexagram 41.

In this pairing there is focus on issues of purity where 24 comes back to it and 41 focuses on manufacturing it.

The generic properties of hexagram 24 reflect the mixing of the generic properties of hexagram 27 with the generic properties of hexagram 23.

A combination of a need to be 'filled', together with a focus on pruning, on removing the chaff, is reflected in the 'return' focus of hexagram 24.

In the variations on a theme sequence, hexagram 24 complements hexagram 02

The pairing of hexagram 02 and 24 reflects the subtle differences in expression focused on the base line of a trigram. Here the 'receptivity' of yangness, as expressed in hexagram 02, is 'hardened' at a general level to be reflected in the focus of hexagram 24 in returning to the 'one true faith'. In pure yinness there is no such need for any particular where the natural devotion skills reflected in 02 elicit immediate, unconditional intimacy.

Living a straight line means, living from birth to death. It has many regrets or knowledge, because there is a past, and many expectations or fears, because there is a future.

Living a cycle means, living the moment which is here now. There still is 'time', but a very different kind. Time is noon, or summer, or being hungry, or being in good company. Time is directly related to living itself, not to something which puts living into a kind of diagram.

The straight-line-time makes moving difficult, because there are so many things you have to reckon with. Actions become frustrated, because they might go wrong, or you might not be clever enough. You copy someone else, because he/she had good results. Experiences dictate what you do or don't.
Cycle-time does not know those problems. Actions happen only now, so you enter into them with enthusiasm, and give everything you have.

Funny thing is, that somewhere in your guts, you know exactly what you can do and what not. Cycle-time seems to put your intuition into action, and that makes all your movements straightforward, without hesitation or clumsiness.

Thinking is very much a straight-line business. From here to there.

Thank you all for your insights. I'm reading The Judgement now as being the reality, and The Image as what one should do to align with it. Thus, in 24 the reality is that things run in cycles and ultimately lots of energy and movement, but to align with this potential one needs be very careful at the beginning. In fact, not just "careful", but one needs to actually conciously honor a day of rest. Perhaps this can be compared to how when we cram for a test and then "sleep on it" we will most likely know the information better than if we put in the same amount of time and then immediately took the test. Something about the importance of taking time out. Interesting how the image only advises the shutting down, as if life will go on as it will, we don't have to create it, but we can improve our attunement by conciously taking a break, fasting.
Interesting also to compare 24 to 3.
3, Difficulty at the Beginning also has the trigram Chen, the arousing thunder at the bottom, so you start to get an understanding of the nature of Chen, it really surprises everybody before you're ready! 3.5 (which would then change and become 24) is particularly discribing why there is difficulty at the beginning - because things are surprising, intentions are not understood. Thus the reason there needs to be this gentleness at the beginnig, the need to get intentions clear so surrounding energies can make room. So surprises don't meet with resistance.
Haven't really explained my thoughts as clearly as I'd like. Still fun to try.

Rosada -

With 24, I look at it from the perspective that there is a cycle that you personally have in your life. You've been there before. Yet each time you return you experience the cycle again - but maybe a little differently and with more insight. Sort of like a spiral. Sort of how they describe therapy - not an even path, but you've been there before - and hopefully each time you revisit it, you have more insight.
