When line 1 & 6 change...

Hi everyone.

I need your experience regarding lines 1 and 6. I’m not sure but I think I have read somewhere here (can’t find that thread), that when the chancing line are 1 and 6, there is a special way to read those line.

Lately I got some answers , where that happened. i.e 25.1.6 , 13.1.6 , 34.1.6
My question is, when you get Hexagram X with changing line 1 and 6, do you read in a special way ?

Thanks in advance

Hi Maria,

a hexagram is a process and the lines relate to pre-conditions that develop in time during the unfoiling of the hexagram. Line one is the first, initial stage, a new situation begins, line six is "leaving" the stage, has the experience. When you have line 1 and six it could mean you can observe or will go through the whole proces of the hexagram in all it's six stages (you always do, but now a bit more so).
Or perhaps you just have to take care a bit more of the beginnings and the final experience.
Personally I know 24 very well in this case: return to friendship, healing and love (after the collaps of 23) symbolized most in the initial first line and then the 6th line, far away from return, seeing the other again with all your fears and grudges. All the lines denote aspects of returning. When you do it based on experience (quarrel, collaps, anger) return is not possible, when you do it on new, leave past and experience behind, it works.

I've mentioned this about lines 1 and 6 a few times. Originally I took the idea from someone called Autumn who i think left. I don't have a watertight theory about it exactly but I feel it can refer to complete mini episodes in life where, as Bert said, you go through the whole experience in one take. For me they've described a whole mini story but its hard to explain. Perhaps its like a whole mini story within the story of your life...almost like an adventure in one day or one scenario with a beginning and an end. It doesn't spill over into the rest of your life, its complete unto itself...and yet it might also be the whole story but sort of in minature. For example I recall getting 28.1.6 after I'd had a crazy day that absolutely overwhelmed me, I felt I'd acted totally out of character and wondered what the hell had happened, was happening. I felt the 28.1.6 showed me kind of having the whole 28 experience in that day with the water going over my head...but it was an isolated sort of mini adventure that was a kind of whole story in itself. I also feel perhaps the relating hexagram becomes really held within, encapsulated within, lines 1 and 6 and its really felt by you on an inner level. So with the 28.1.6 example what had made me act differently or outside my boundaries was perhaps the creative hex 1 in me. What actually happened was I'd taken the microphone to speak in a large gathering and hence made myself pretty conspicuous and it felt like something made me do it (hex 1 ?) which eventually was a little too much for my comfort zone. But my point is that kind of thing isn't going to happen to me everyday or necessarily impinge in anyway on the rest of my life..it was just a one off, a mini adventure with a beginning and an end.

So I don't know if it will make sense if you view your experiences with 25.1.6 etc in that light....and I don't know if I have the full picture, but I definately do think there is something defined about about an answer with both lines 1 and 6. I think perhaps the Yi is showing you an episode complete unto itelf. 25.1.6 'holds' 45 as the relating hexagram....a suprise party lol

I'll be interested to hear what others think, I'm quite curious about this

Trojan,

I am really intrigued by your mini-story theory, and also by Jilt's observations.

I recently had a reading regarding, basically, advice to a young person regarding a new relationship. The answer was 41.1.6 - > 7

How would you interpret that, within the context of your mini-story?

Thanks.

Hi, to be honest I can't say how I'd interpret that because with the example I gave of my own experience I really understood it on a feeling level rather than on a articulated verbal level. I didn't mean to suggest there is always a certain rule or way of interpreting 1st and 6th line changing just that I sense the whole cycle of the hexgram comes to play in the answer....for me it seems to have an episodic quality.

Bert and Trojan, thanks for sharing your view and Luis, thanks for the images.
I used to read those lines like just two line, but getting those reading make me think that is something more. What you said and the images was something i had in a very vague way in my mind.

I recall Autumn saying that she had noticed that things tended to happen very quickly when 1 and 6 were the moving lines. It's also interesting to be aware that the nuclear hexagram is the same for both the original and resulting hexagrams if only first and/or top line change.

Ah yes i remember that too. Ties in with my experience, lines one and six moving has equaled 24 hour escapade. Interesting about nuclear hex being the same, hadn't realised that.

Thanks Miakoda,

I didn't knew it . Wonders which is the significance of having two changes lines, one of Earth's and one of Heaven's

I've a couple of visual metaphors for 1&6 mutating lines: a Möbius strip and the Ouroboros

Hi Luis
Nice visuals. I haven't played with a mobius strip since I was at school.

I'm interested here as I've been getting 1 and 6 changing for me on a few readings lately.

The Ouroborus was a concept I'd not linked with Mobius strip before, so that's useful.
So are we sort of saying here that when 1 and 6 change at the same time you are changing the beginning and end of the cyclic event that you were into and having changed that it means the lesson has been learnt. You begin a new view on that particular issue, viewing it through the lens of teh resultant hexagram.

This may be a mini-story, or a flash of inspired insight. You walk through the process and this time around you have seen a way to break the chain .
