People say that the trigrams and the Image are helpful with lost-object questions. The Image, from Wilhelm's translation, says

"The lake rises above the trees:
The image of PREPONDERANCE OF THE GREAT.
Thus the superior man, when he stands alone,
Is unconcerned,
And if he has to renounce the world,
He is undaunted."

Er...could it have been lost in a flood? Or, maybe more likely, could it be under water in a metaphorical sense, like at the bottom of a drawer full of other things?

When are you travelling? Wilhelm's commentary (quoted below) is optimistic, but since the purpose of a passport is to allow you to see the world, it seems not-so-great that the Image text talks about renouncing the world.

Extraordinary times when the great preponderates are like flood times when the lake rises over the treetops. But such conditions are temporary. The two trigrams indicate the attitude proper to such exceptional times: the symbol of the trigram Sun is the tree, which stands firm even though it stands alone, and the attribute of Tui is joyousness, which remains undaunted even if it must renounce the world.

However, here's how Hilary translates the Image:

‘The lake submerges the tree.
Great Exceeding.
A noble one stands alone without fear,
Withdraws from the time without sadness.’

I wonder if the answer is that you won't find it, and you'll have to get a new one. Hexagram 28 does seem like it could describe something that's so near the breaking point that it's beyond saving. The good news might be that you'll be able to get this done successfully. "Stands alone without fear, Withdraws from the time without sadness."

Oh, I forgot you did a follow-up reading, sorry.

How can I find it? 35.3.4.5.6 - 39

Well...I could be biased from my last answer, but my thought here is that this reading is confirming that you'll have to get a new one.

35 means "Advancing," and 39 means "Limping" or "Difficulties," but with an emphasis on turning around and finding a different path. So don't just stay where you are, looking for your existing passport - advance beyond that and reach your goal a different way.

From Hilary's translation:

35.3
‘All have confidence. Regrets vanish.’

That's a nice supportive line :). You might have regrets over losing your passport, but those regrets will vanish.

35.4
‘Advancing like a long-tailed rodent,
Constancy: danger.’

Here are some excerpts from Hilary's commentary:

This rodent advances in an opportunistic way by taking what it needs and hiding it away in its own little pile, scurrying from one grain to the next. Although it constantly scuttles around the perimeter of the huge grain store, it is too small to see anything so large. It represents a myopic mentality, without greater purpose...

...to persist in such small-scale thinking is dangerous. Fearful motivation and limited perspective will undermine you and warp your tactics; the smaller you act, the smaller you become.

I think the small view would be to persist in trying to find your existing passport. If you keep doing that ("constancy"), there will be "danger." Look at the big picture, and serve your "greater purpose" of being able to travel.

35.5
'Regrets vanish.
Letting go, gaining, do not worry.
Going on is good fortune,
Nothing that does not bear fruit.’

Again, "regrets vanish." You will benefit from "letting go" of your premise here, which is to find your existing passport. But if you get beyond that, there will be good fortune.

35.6
‘Advancing with your horns.
Holding fast, use this to subjugate the city.
Danger, good fortune, not a mistake.
Constancy: shame.’

Okay! The line with almost every known omen word in it! :D

If you were a horned animal, running with your horns down would be a sign of aggression, of being determined to get past everything in your way. You can "subjugate" a lot that way; it's not a bad thing to do: "[d]anger, good fortune, not a mistake." But once you've done all you can in this manner, remaining constant to it will bring shame.

In your situation, I think it means to make a good effort to find your passport, which you've probably already done - maybe you might have stumbled upon it fortuitously! But it's important to know when to stop and do something different. In my opinion - because you've gotten these particular readings from Yi - that time has most likely come.

(Now watch this make no sense in real life, just because I feel pretty confident about it. :cloud: LOL)

"Why doesn't Yi just tell me where it is?" you ask (well...I would ask.) There could actually be reasons! Such as: It's literally irretrievable, for example if it got thrown away and is now at the bottom of a garbage dump. Or, it is still in your possession, but it would take you longer to find it than you have to spare (what if you have 1000 books on bookshelves, and the passport is stuck among them?). And/or, Yi just doesn't have the language it needs to describe the location (it has no way of saying, "It's in the packing box with Susie's old dolls").

I see 35.3.4.5 as meaning do everything you can to make Progress including both looking all over AND applying for a new one.

Perhaps 35.6 means you will find it just as you are about to give up of any further progress in the search and are about to mail in the check for a new one. I've found that sometimes when you "threaten" the Universe you're going to take that final step, It suddenly gives you what you've been asking for. Like, the way to find it is to get to the point of 35.6 - giving up - and then you'll find it.

Yes, even better! That could tie nicely into the "regrets vanish" omens. Simultaneously looking and starting the application for a new one means that you won't be able to look back and regret anything.

I have another thought or possibility. It seems each of the hexagrams and lines point to trying too hard, being strained by the weight of the matter, entangled by trying or thinking too many things at once, like the five skilled squirrel in 35.4. I know that when I find myself in this bind and pressure, the way to free my memory is to support that ridgepole in my head and back; thrown back upon myself, before my mind and memory can function freely, I need to free the pressure of needing to remember. It sounds strange: to remember, forget, and the obstruction to recall disappears. Suddenly the way becomes clear, and I can recall clearly the traces which lead back to the object I've been searching for. It could be a word, a name, or a passport. Somewhere in your mind you know what you last did with it. Progress with horns and desperation only obstruct the way. Forget it and it will come to you.

Excellent advice. A British general once gave a talk to my unit in east Africa. British generals have better things to do than give talks to Americans, but the British were desperate for information about conditions in Yemen and wished to encourage us. The heads of their soldiers were being cut off and mounted on poles. I worked night shift and could not attend the talk, but one who did gave me a summary: When you cannot think, forget the problem and go lay on the beach, humorous advice, because there were no beaches about, and local waters were infected with blood flukes. The principle, though, is sound. Stop trying so hard, and it will come to you.

where is the passport? Hexagram 28 unchanging: the passport has been "lost in the shuffle". In other words, you have been very busy and moving a lot of things around and somewhere in all this activity you let the passport get away from you, maybe under a pile of other stuff.

How can you find it? Hexagram 35.3.4.5.6 - 39: You know where it is, but you are too busy and scattered to remember clearly. Let yourself sleep and dream on the question and you unconscious mind will remember where you put it.

Found it!!

I am very pleased that for once, I did not go into a panic. :)

I thought I'll be methodical about this and just search a different area every day. Not my usual search style which involves having to search the same place several times. I also tried to see if my dreams would yield anything. I did get a dream about climbing a stairs and getting stuck at where a handrail was. Indeed my passport was in the area where my drawers are at the top of the stairs where the handrail is, but there are so many drawers!! Nothing to distinguish one from the other, so I guess the dream was as specific as possible. I had joined an agency and they had so many ID requests, the passport was stuffed among all these verifications.

Thanks all so much for your feedback. There is something so unsettling about losing important documents. I felt so so much better getting all your replies. I think that feeling of support, also enabled me to be calmer and take my time.

Thanks so much!! :bows:

Hooray! :claps: I'm so glad you found it, Lodestar, and thank you for coming back and telling us what happened.

That is absolutely fascinating the way your dream helped you. Sooo, Pocossin, and Danadanadana got it perfectly: stop trying so hard, and it will come to you. I can see how 35.4 (don't be frantic) and 35.5 ("let go" of it) fit, and also the Image of hexagram 28, "[t]he lake rises above the trees," since it was buried in a lot of other documents. (It was even a semi-logical place, since all the documents, including the passport, had to do with ID requests.)

If you don't mind another question in addition to Pocossin's - Rosada had said, "Perhaps 35.6 means you will find it just as you are about to give up of any further progress in the search..." Was that the case? Had you almost given up?

Well...a third question, if you don't mind :)...were you steadily looking for it this entire time (more than a week), or had you actually "let go" and stopped searching? I'm asking because 35.6 still confuses me. 35.6 does clearly end with "Constancy, shame"...a certain amount of "subjugating" is good, but there is a point to stop. If you kept looking all this time, that seems like not what the line advised? Maybe the key is that it wasn't necessary to keep looking, because the dream came along and helped...I don't know...:eek:uch:

It's also interesting how Svenrus said "The lower or the coming trigram Sun represents beside approach of summer the following sites..." and what is today, June 21st? The first official day of summer.

Upon further reading...maybe a key to 35.6 is to notice that "the city" is a reference to "your own realm," as Hilary puts it in her commentary. "Your own realm" in this case could have meant "some connection to a passport." So...question: "How can I find it?" Answer: Evaluate potential search locations by their similarity to a passport, so you can narrow your efforts. Look in your luggage (or with other official papers), but don't waste time in your sock drawer?

Wilhelm and Bradford Hatcher make it even more explicit (underlining mine):

Wilhelm:
"Making progress with the horns is permissible
Only for the purpose of punishing one's own city.
To be conscious of danger brings good fortune.
No blame.
Perseverance brings humiliation.

His commentary: "...perseverance in such over energetic behavior, especially toward persons with whom there is no close connection, will lead to humiliation."

Bradford:
"Advancing those antlers
Limit the practice to discipline of the home town
That harshness is timely
Is not to be blamed
But to persist is a disgrace"

Since 28 unchanging was the first reading, though, I'm also interested in Pocossin's question - which drawer was it? As he suggested, was it a top drawer, like a ridgepole?

Hilary's oracle commentary for 28 includes (underlining mine), "The traditional Chinese house has a structure like an old-fashioned tent: uprights support a horizontal ridgepole..."

Some details of that sound like a handrail...and a handrail does support a person climbing the stairs...and you said the drawers are at the top of the stairs, close to the handrail...still, I don't think I would ever have gotten it. A handrail is not a ridgepole in the usual sense.

Unless...by any chance is your handrail damaged in some way? (Warped, rickety, close to collapse?)

Hi Lisa, due to the good advice, I never got to the point of 'giving up' as such. Early on I decided to detach, so I definitely let go..
I chose to be methodical in the search, but only searched when it suited me, 10 minutes here or there. And being careful to remember where I had looked. The roof above near my drawers is a pitched roof and it has a sort of stylised supporting beam across it..

Pocossin I think it may have been in the upper drawers, but what I did was completely empty all the drawers onto the floor, then search through..

Thanks for all your help folks. I find it interesting how Yi works with the physical world, I've used it mostly for emotional questions.

Many Thanks! I learnt a lot from you guys!
