Hello everyone,

Today I realised I miss my period for the first time in 35 years (I'm 45, got my first period when I was 10), and I freaked out. There is no chance that I can be pregnant, so I'm thinking it must be I'm starting perimenopause, or it coould also be a health issue. Getting Hexagram 11, Flow, made me smile because, well... I'm asking about missing a flow. But can't really grasp the meaning of it, specially with so many changing lines (1, 2, 3, 6). In general, and also taking into account the relating hexagram (23) I gather that a process has started, which is not something bad, but inevitable, and I just have to go with its flow. On the other hand, both Hexagrams seemed to symbolize the period (the flow, and the stripping away the old), so I thought that could mean that, eventually, my period will come. If anyone feels like giving their two cents I'd appreciate it very much. Many thanks in advance :)

Hello,

I agree, flow seems very appropriate here, plus 23 is a sign of period- stripping away some layers. Don't worry, it will happen.

I don‘t know if this is relevant, but I had a very late period after both of my Covid vaccinations and apparently this is a known minor side effect. I’m slightly older than you and usually regular as clockwork.

It's said when you start your cycle early like 10 years old, you end early. Many women end their cycles around 50 years old, but they may have started when they were 14 or 15 years old. Its a fine balance. Plus when you start menopause, it's on and off for about five years, so I would say you are probably starting the slow process of change. To me, the I Ching Flow means just that, flow with what you are experiencing with your body. By 48 you could be completely finished with the bleeding cycle, that wouldn't be unusual. Just keep your healthy lifestyle in check and go with the flow of being a woman and all its unknown and known treasures!

Thaks everyone for your inputs. The nature of hexagram 23 left me, indeed, rather confused since I couldn't gather wether it refers to menstruation (stripping the old blood and tissue) as you also see it, Marybluesky, or entering menopause (stripping the old, "fertile" age.) Flow also seemed to refer to the period itself, or to the acceptance of what I'm experiencing in my body. Taking account my age and early menarche, seems menopause could be a winner... Corn3lia, I'm not vaccinated, so can't be that... PhoenixtheElder, I heard too about ending your cycle early if it starts early, but once a gynecologist also told me that a good way to calculate when will end, it's asking your mother how was hers, since apparently, there is significat correlation between mothers and daugthers cycles. But I asked my mother and her experience of it was nothing like mine. Actually, I've wondered many times the reason for my precocity or earliness on that matter, and I eventually came to the conclusion that I probably had been exposed to some endocrine disruptors as a child (not that I had a foundation for that, but 9 years old seemed too early to happen just because). But today I read that, in many cases, environmental stress may trigger starting menstruating too early. I did the math and was exactly when I was 9 that my mother started going through an alcoholic phase, so it would make sense that enduring some super stressing difficulties is the reason behind that earliness. I'm sorry I'm sharing this here, which is totally unrelated to the cast, but it's kind of a revelation I just had and seemed relevant to my journey to understand myself better :). Will keep the post updated with further news about my period; maybe it could be of some use to someone, someday.

11 > 23 does look to me like "stripping the flow" or "flow disappearing" however that could simply be about the one missed period. I also thought about blood deficiency, from a Chinese medicine perspective, not sure if you every receive treatment in that system of medicine but blood or maybe even qi could be deficient (this can of course be natural and simply part of your body changing, or sometimes perhaps you've been more taxed than usual for some reason and there's a way to correct it). I do think it's possible this reading suggests an early stage of menopause as you had mentioned as a possibility. That also doesn't mean your period will entirely stop now, as you know of course, but maybe simply that it's a sign of either being overly taxed or some other major recent change, or simply your cycle entering another phase of life.

Thank you so much redoleander for taking the time to share your thoughts. It's funny that you mentioned chinese medicine because I actually set an appointment for my chinese doctor and I'm seeing him tomorrow. I am familiar with this medicine and I like its approach to address health problems. Call me silly, but I also like the way they verbalize their diagnoses; I'm happier being told that I have Fire exhaustion and qi stagnation that, well... menopause . No, seriously, I'm looking forward to hear his thoughts and see how eventually they fit -or not- with this reading. As days go by I come to accept that I am entering the process of stripping the flow for good. I only hope the process is gonna take some time so I can adjust and mentally prepare myself for all the changes that come with the process.

For what is worth, just wanted to update this thread to say that my period finally came back. My chinese doctor said I had blood defficiency and liver exhaustion, and my western doctor said I was entering perimenopause. So, in summary, the answer to my question "why did I miss my period" was "because you are flowing through the totally natural process of getting older and stripping your period away from your life. But it's a process, and it's gonna take a while, and there is nothing to worry about."
