Why do you (iching) always give me negative answers which I don't like?

Hexagram 9.6 into Hexagram 5

Hexagram 9.6 is unfavorable saying I should be content with what I have, and hexagram 5 shows patience.

Am i correct?

That is a great & hilarious question, and a great answer. Do you have Hilary's I Ching? You should get it:

http://www.amazon.com/Ching-Walking...4534/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1294852371&sr=8-1

She says of this line "You have received what you need for now; the energy is there for the crops to grow. Honour this, in all its wonderful, unknowable potential . . . The rain has already come; you can't get it to rain for next year, too, just to make sure."

Haha, ya this is a funny question but it is also a serious question. I like to believe that the I-ching is sometimes wrong because its answers are sometimes illogical and rather pessimistic leaving for a closed mind. Answers should be encouraging and helpful rather then paralyzing the person in their thoughts. It seems like the i-ching is a reflection of how the persons attitude and how they perceive a situation rather then a objective reality which depends on pure logic.

The I Ching isn't ever paralyzing you its your interpretation, your perception of what the answer means to you. Maybe you just don't understand the answer well enough, most of us don't. So be patient with yourself. If you get an answer you don't like walk away from it for a while, let your mind clear, when you go back and look again often you see the meaning more clearly and it isn't as bad as you thought. The 9.6 really fits here I think. You can't force the pace, ease off a bit

I often walk away from answers because I don't like them or feel disgruntled by them  Later on, when I look at the answer again I wonder why I didn' t like it. It seems fine, perfectly apt. I think what can happen is most of us have a wide range of internal disaproving voices...sometimes Yis answers seem to trigger one of those internal dialogues and we see the answer through the fog of our own self disaproval. Also beware authors commentaries. This isn't the I Ching its someones view of it..it is better just to read the text of the Yi before the authors commentary. Some commentaries are so suicide inducing they should be banned ! When I was a young thing Sam Reiflers commentaries could cast me into despair for days !

Having said all that you say answers should always be encouraging ? Why ? If you are considering a really bad idea why would you want an encouraging answer ? That would be misleading wouldn't it ?

Anyway 9.6 is a great answer. Stop pushing and have a nice rest !

what are your own experiences with the outcomes for situations that seemed doomed according to the Yi? I agree that sometimes the yi responses make me feel awful, and yes, sometimes it has seemed to me in retrospect that the responses were mirroring my own attitudes and perceptions. I'd like a nickel for everytime I have gotten hex 56 with lines 3 and 6. WHY? I moan, I am not laughing and being careless, why am I in danger of losing my "young servant" and burning up my resting place?!

But sometimes it's a very good thing to get a clear reading on what kind of "vibration" I am operating under. Outcomes can change when we align with a different vibration, or fully accept where we are currently. so I guess something like 56.3.6 can be a call to come home to where I am, be grateful, and pay attention to what supports me.

But I do like interpretations that can suggest a positive course of action when faced with lines that seem so disheartening. and btw, 9.6 > 5 is not so disheartening. I find 9 to be more just plain boring! so I can see why you felt paralyzed by it. :)

Why does the I Ching give me negative answers that I don't like?

9.6
The rain comes, there is rest.
This is due to the lasting effect of character.
Perseverance brings the woman into danger.
The moon is nearly full.
If the superior man persists,
Misfortune follows.

You receive an answer, give it a rest.
How you interpret it is based on your level of understanding.
Your level ot understanding has been created one day at a time from all your experiences.
Trying to get the I Ching to tell you what you want to hear will only get you into trouble.
And if you ignore the advice,
Misfortune follows.

5.
Waiting.
The superior man eats and drinks,
Is joyous and of good cheer.

Because of your limited experience you interpret the answers as negative. if you can be patient and watch to see how things eventually play out you may fine the answers were not so negative after all, but merely seemed that way because you had no positive experience to equate them with.

How about this quote for 9.6

"Sufficient to the day is the evil there of"?

Meaning don't worry about things, be 5. Patient.

this thread has cause me to go back and study hexagram 9 from the ground up. It's really quite an interesting hexagram. Although some folks don't like to attach meaning to the sequence of the hexagrams I think King Wen was on to something. So in trying to understand hexagram 9 I go back to review hexagram 8. Now 8 talks about Holding Together and the importance of either starting a group or joining one. There is a specific warning against starting a group when you really don't know what you're doing. But there seems to also be the suggestion that in finding others to hold with, the hope is the others will also want to hold with us. But the lines in hex.8 suggest the bonding never takes place. While one may find someone worthy to hold with, 8.4, the sense is that this other allows us to hold with them if we choose, but they make no promises to us, 8.5. So the whole arrangement is unsatisfactory, and 8.6 there is no head for holding together. Joining a partnership without a prenuptial is a bust. But no problem. Tomorrow is another day and this is where hexagram 9 begins:
9.1
Return to the way..
That is, no longer trying to head a group or get others to join you, go back to square one.
9.2
He allows himself to be drawn into returning.
Maybe you want to press ahead but everyone around you is holding back. Maybe you should to.
9.3
The spokes burst out of the wagon wheels.
Man and wife roll their eyes.
Interesting the image of the wheel bursting. We are not moving ahead.
And the conscious mind and the unconscious not seeing things eye to eye.

So if we're still on a mission to find like minded helpers as we were in hex. 8, so far we're seeing that forcing ourselves on others is not the way to go.

In reference to asking a question these three lines seem to be cautioning that we don't know the answer, we must get centered, neutral and we mustn't try to force the I Ching to be a good wife and just say what we want to hear.

9.4
If you are sincere, blood vanishes and fear gives way.

If this line refers to us, it would suggest that rather than trying to impose one's own will, being calm would allow us to connect with the other.

In reference to asking a question it sounds like it is describing the I Ching, giving sincere counsel.

9.5
If you are sincere and loyally attached,
You are rich in your neighbor.

So here if the seeker is sincere he can profit from the advice of the sage.

9.6
The rain comes, there is rest.

And so the final line is telling us we've gone as far as we can go and again, not to force things.

---
Haven't been able to polish this but must run out the door.
Perhaps this is as far as I can go.

This is a wonderful description of hex 9 and very helpful especially as this seems to be a lean hexagram somehow. The reason I am commenting here is that there are no other castings. It's like this hexagram has gone unnoticed.

It is an interesting hexagram. Almost like the thing you pass by each day without spotting - but it is there. Like the person you notice but walk past. It could be the elderly lady in the park that sits there each day with her dog - boringly benal perhaps as we hurry to work. It is not like hex 8 nor is it treading as in 10. It is just there.
Someone has said it is a somewhat boring hexagram. I don't think of it as a bad reading as suggested initially - anymore than it is a good reading.

I have just got moving lines 2 4 5 6 and to me it feels like reigning in as if we are being told that we have done all we can for now. It feels like waiting for exam results - of not being able to do much until we get them. Sit down relax (or not) but take a break. My question was where should I put my energies in the next few weeks. The answer seems to say just rest and store energy or join the lady on the bench for a chat.

In relation to the original question hex 9 is not at all dull or pessimistic. But then my question felt quite optimistic - rather like the excitement of waiting for something to happen or of events unfolding. Had my question been different or if I had been wanting an affirmation of action then perhaps my interpretation would not have been the same

Have not looked at hex 9 before so will now think on it whilst waiting - as in 9.6. Hex 9 will now enter my headspace ...

Thank you Rosada
