Why I keep waking up at night? 48 unchanging

I have been waking up at 4 am for more than 2 weeks already, during the day I have headache because of lack of sleep. I was under the stress due to setback in my professional and personal lives. So when I asked Yi about it, I got the Well. I am familiar with the concept of this hexagram because at some point I was getting it about my personal life. This is the first time I got it for the question not related to heart matters. So the well is about our center, the place within ourselves where the inner truth is, but how it relates to me? Does it mean that I have been denying it? I am trying to find an internship, but so far have to take more classes at school; in my personal life there's nothing going on, because of the break up that I am trying to get over.
When I asked what is the best for me to do in order to get my sleep, I got 60 unchanging. Does it mean I restrict myself in something and I should let go of it? The unchanging hexagrams are the most confusing for me.
Dear all, please help me to get some answers.
Thank you very much!

Thank you kafuka! I think that could be the case, I have been skipping meals, don't have an appetite, always thirsty, so liver could be the case. I know, a lot of stuff that is going on in my life, I can't control, so that makes me very frustrated.

While kafuka has an interesting take, I think that 48 is more qualified to design the brain than the body. I'd ask this follow-up question: what plan?

48 - Organization

One distributes their action according to a plan.

When I asked what is the best for me to do in order to get my sleep, I got 60 unchanging.

Naturally the answer is incomplete, unless you really know what the oracle is talking about ,it's better to ask this follow-up question: limit what?

60 - Limit

One does not go further.

The well has been known to refer to mass consciousness, also the well of the subconscious and unconscious. I wonder if you are waking at 4am every night because you need to remember or process something you haven't yet come to terms with ? have you tried meditating on the issue ? It may be worthwhile. The text says the well holds water but the misfortune comes if the bucket is broken or leaking. In your case that might mean whatever thought/emotion/memory it is you need to access in the daytime you just can't reach it so your sleeping mind brings it to you at 4am. is there anything you might be avoiding thinking about ?

Also, non Yi related, I know there is a theory that waking at this time each night is a sign of 'ascension'. Google 'waking 4am, ascension symptoms' and see what comes up. I'm not sure it's true but it might be of interest to know you are not alone and many people suffer from waking at this regular time. If it were related to that you see that is how the well might apply as it's a mass symptom.

I personally think you are waking up because the deeper mind (well) you do not access in the daytime needs to communicate with you. I suggest quiet times in the day where you sit and ask your mind what it wants to tell you. Also ask for some revealing dreams to come, write them down. Taking note of your dreams can enable you access to the well of your deeper mind.

When I asked what is the best for me to do in order to get my sleep, I got 60 unchanging.

Oops missed this. Well 60 shows how we make divisions, measures and boundaries in our lives. It seems quite a pragmatic answer. Try to get your routines simplified so your mind knows when is sleep time, when is waking time and when is thinking time. It may be your mind is perhaps trying to do it's deep thinking in the night. Well keep to boundaries. Meditate and ask your mind to show you it's concern in the daytime and give some special time to this.

(There is no need to ask follow up questions here IMO unless you feel the need of course. Moving straight on to follow up questions because one doesn't understand an answer is not a good idea.)

So far we have one suggestion which was to limit food, and yours which was difficult to understand clearly, meditate on daytime? What for?

Since there is no general agreement, the best is indeed to ask the follow-up question: limit what and let the oracle enlighten us.

Please answer truthfully, don't be shy.

Do you engage in any recreational substances in the evening?

Well we don't aim for general agreement on a reading, we are sharing our takes on it. The answer may be about food or needing to reach a deeper level of thought or both.

I already explained why meditating in the day might help. The well can be the depths of the mind or even the collective mind. Do you have any idea what 48uc might mean ?

There is no need to ask 'limit what ?'. 60 was the answer, right there.

Why would she need to ask 'what plan' ? What has it got to do with a plan ?

She then got a perfectly good answer of 60uc which you said was ''incomplete'. How is Yi's answer incomplete ? It really is quite complete it's just that you have no idea what it means. When you have no clue about answers it isn't a good idea just to tell people to keep firing follow up questions.

But you don't even know if 48 was referring to the mind so you can't elaborate on 60 yet. Do I need to recall you the classical comment on 52?
The image of KEEPING STILL.
Thus the superior man
Does not permit his thoughts
To go beyond his situation.

Since you love meditating on limitation, this is a thought of choice.

So, let's ask the follow-up questions and sort this out.

I asked about the recreational substances because I know two people with just barely restrained anger issues who smoke grass and are happy as puppies. Then around 4am they wake up feeling angry or stimulated after it wears off.

Oh maybe you are unaware that 48 refers to organization? Let me quote Wilhelm for you, that will educate you:

Water over wood: the image of THE WELL.
Thus the superior man encourages the people at their work,
And exhorts them to help one another.
The trigram Sun, wood, is below, and the trigram K'an, water, is above it. Wood sucks water upward. Just as wood as an organism imitates the action of the well, which benefits all parts of the plant, the superior man organizes human society, so that, as in a plant organism, its parts co-operate for the benefit of the whole.

Thus the well is the image of an organized society. And who says organization, says making plans. So the follow-up question "What plan?" comes up naturally.

I don't think we can 'sort it out'. We are just offering thoughts. I did not say 'meditate on limitation' at all.

My answer was for Zumi not you anyway. But in every response you give here you tell people to ask follow up questions because you have no clue what their answer means. In fact it is clear you really have absolutely no idea about the I Ching at all.

To be honest I'm not sure what you said exactly, that was too complicated for my limited understanding.

Well maybe not but I have this over you that 48 means organization, and organization induces plans.

So you think every time someone casts 48 they need to ask a follow up question of 'what plan ?'. If every answer given by Yi needed a follow up question there would be no point in consulting.

48 doesn't mean organization.
To give it one word: cooperation.

The two are not synonymous.

Zumi do feel free to ask follow up questions here if you wish. The point I am making is more general as Taoscopy suggests every single person who posts here should ask follow up questions rather than understand the answer they got.

Consulting the I Ching requires to be attentive to the oracle answer and a serious method to progress through the difficulties of the understanding. As long as you don't know for sure what the oracle is talking about you will need to ask questions until you get it right.

Now when you get 48 you cannot decide outright that it means the deeper mind, you have no ground for that. By the mean of the follow-up questions you can figure out what the oracle is talking about and receive knowledge without error.

Well maybe not

Hang on you are admitting you know nothing about the I Ching

but I have this over you that 48 means organization, and organization induces plans.

48 does not only mean organisation. 48 is called 'the well'. Limitless depth of resource, like the human mind, the subconscious. The only limitation is when the bucket, our small minds, cannot reach the source. Organisation might be a part of the well of human endeavour but to say 'it means organisation' and nothing else is not covering the breadth of meaning of the hexagram.

So about two hours after we fall asleep
the growth hormones are released into the bloodstream.

I wonder if the 4am for you is when dreams should be kicking in.

In ancient China, the well was placed at the center of the village, so 8 families could live around it, hence the plan and the sense of organization:

1 2 3
4 W 5
6 7 8

What you say about the bucket demonstrates how wrong you are with the follow-up questions, since you stop digging the oracle's well at the first hexagram when you should continue to dig and reach the limitless source of the oracle's knowledge. Thanks for proving my point with your argument, I would have been unable to do as well myself.

No I cannot 'decide outright' I can merely offer my view of the answer. As for hexagram 48 you really ought to read the preface to Wilhelm's I Ching. Jung writes of the well as the 'waters of life' and really what else would you imagine a well to symbolise. How could a well just be 'organisation'. Anyway read what Jung says in his preface here

http://www.iging.com/intro/foreword.htm

Also of course you could just read the I Ching to get some idea.

Just to help Zumi here
I generally get hex 48 when I am swimming around in deep dark waters ...
My mind even if I am swimming which is cool and refreshing - cannot see clearly - rather like the depths if the well. Even in hot villages the well is deep and cool - and we can only draw up the water not actually get to its bottom. If we did the well would either have dried up or we would have fallen in
I think your mind or body represents this well and is linked to managing your body and mind somehow
I don't know why I think this but I think you should drink some boiled refreshing water before bed. When I was waking in the early hours pregnant with my second child the wonderful midwife said that it was because I was thirsty. My body needed fluids - and that the cause of my waking was needing to rehydrate. She also said that
Going to bed at a different time could change your sleep pattern. You could try this - it can't harm to drinkers fluids anyway.

I think that the planning aspect of 48 is more about management of the well - under or over use health hygiene and contamination are part of this I think ....

For sure I am a bigger fool than I ever suspected for hanging around arguing with you. You suggest here 48 always means 'keep digging by asking more follow up questions' ? It's funny because every single thread you answer in SR you say the answer means 'ask more follow up questions'. You say 'ask more follow up questions' because you cannot interpret the answers. Well if you can't interpret answers maybe you should do a course or something ? There is a free beginners course here you know. http://www.onlineclarity.co.uk/learn/

I'll leave it there since the thread is getting derailed and there's not much point in this conversation.

Still at least if Zumi wakes up this thread will put her straight back to sleep

Some times yes..
Some others the initial post gives some cluess about about the matter or the answer.

For instance:
Zuni has no access to a job she wishes and is not in a relationship ...so perhaps the image of a well ( what she needs) and the short rope/ broken jug ( setbacks) are not totally unrelated.

Also the feeling she has not control and the limitations of 60 could be also a starting point to decipher the castings.

What do you thing?

How could a well just be 'organisation'.

I was not addressing the point that a well is only organization, I was addressing this:

Why would she need to ask 'what plan' ? What has it got to do with a plan ?

But since I have adressed the organization part, I can also elaborate on how digging for resources also requires a plan. In fact, it's even more necessary because if you dig randomly you will find nothing.

In fact the title (Organization) refers to itself, and the sentence offers a wider perspective. By distributing my actions according to a plan I can dig for resources, as well as many other things.

48 - Organization

One distributes their action according to a plan.

That's why the follow-up question "What plan?" is useful, and will allow us to progress into the understanding of this situation.

What do you think?

Really if I had to keep only one comment in the classical text, that would be this one, the 52:

Thus the superior man
Does not permit his thoughts
To go beyond his situation.

It has helped me refrain from interpreting too fast during my I Ching's journey, since the beginning.

Don't get me wrong, the classical comments have some great wisdom inside them, but these new ones are so superior that you will regret not having checked them earlier. Trojina's posts are only slowing the inevitable outcome, that these comments will replace the classical ones.

Now what you say is interesting, so was the take on food. It's an exciting intellectual exercise, but to know for sure, ask the follow-up questions.
