We sometimes say we feel the Yi is our friend, and I have a good example of why we come to feel this way.

This morning I asked the I Ching about my going out to a scheduled appointment in the late afternoon, since I am still suffering from a severe cold and I was worried if I went out into the cold weather, the cold might get a lot worse. I got hexagram 36, censorship, with no moving lines.

Well, I didn't quite see how that response applied. It just did not seem to apply to my question and the type of appointment I was scheduled for later in the day.

As I sat there staring at this hexagram 36, the phone rang.

I do some freelance work alone, and I hear from this supervisor approximately once or twice a year, tops. As she spoke, I realized that the hexagram I had just gotten applied to this phone call, not to my question.

My supervisor was saying that she had decided to radically change the way I do part of my work. She was telling me the changes she had already made in the computer. My thoughts were that such sweeping changes were shocking and that they were actually incorrect procedure.

But as I sat there listening to my boss's voice on the telephone, I was gazing at hexagram 36. It was as if the Yi was right there in the room with me, telling me that I needed to keep quiet and not disagree with my boss. I really appreciated this help from my friend, because I just might have said something I would sorely regret, being so fuzzy minded from my cold.

In the past, when something like this happened once before, I had fumed for weeks over it. This time, with a little help from my friend, I didn't think about it again. Whenever I thought of this incident later in the day, I said, "Thank you, I Ching."

I went to the other appointment in the late afternoon, which was unrelated to this job situation, and I can say that the appointment in the afternoon was not and had never been a hex 36 situation.

Realizing this, I thought I might write and tell you all about this. Sometimes the I Ching disregards the question we asked in order to answer the one really on the agenda. I'm sure I am not the only one who has had this experience, because I have read references to the I Ching "pre-empting the programming," so to speak, in many I Ching books. Thank you, I Ching.

Yes actually for me I'd say this happens about 75% of the time. As i read the answer i realise simultaneously what the real question actually was.

I think when you start to notice that happening, one thing it means is that the oracle's really talking to you. But what that means really is that you've become alert and receptive to life, and that's the bigger benefit, I think. It's wonderful when you start to n-o-t-i-c-e things.
