A year ago I've tried to grow mango tree out of a seed, the seed was half-opened but it failed to sprout.
Today I finally got another good-looking seed. The outer shell has already cracked open.

I've placed it in the water, to help it sprout, and grow its root, then i will plant it in the pot.

So I asked the oracle about it, and got 19.2(Approach) -> 24(Return).
Amazingly both hexes are linked with calendar, in Wilhelm's book.

Hex 19
This hexagram is linked with the twelfth month (January-February), when after the winter solstice, the light power begins to ascend again.

Hex 24
The winter solstice brings the victory of light. This hexagram is linked with the eleventh month, the month of the solstice (December-January).

19.2 Speaks of "Joint approach", that i should support this seed and nurture it.

Both hexes look good, I hope this reading will come true.

Will my mango seed sprout?
19.2 > 24

Both 19 and 24 contain , which suggests to me that your seed would have a better chance in soil.

http://houseplants.about.com/od/Tropicals/p/Mango-Growing-And-Sprouting-Mango-Seeds.htm

The seed probably shouldn't be lying in water but suspend in it.

http://www.ehow.com/how_6530551_sprout-avocado-seed.html

Is your seed warm enough? I have sprouted tomato seeds on a water heater. Since 24 is no go, I'll guess no. But why do I keep paying attention to the text? Peer pressure, I suppose. In terms of the King Wen Sequence, 24 is sprouting, so yes. Further, 19 is excellent for starting a seed.

Thanks for the links poccosin :)

Last time I've tried to put the seed in the soil, and it didn't work, so now I want to try placing it in the water first, so that half of the seed is above water.

I've 1 year old avocado tree already, and it's getting lonely so I want to grow him a mango-buddy)

About 24, it bums me too, but it says the light will return in December, I mean the 'dead tree' will 'return' through it's 'lowest point' - the seed.

It did not sprout, oh well :(

The seed did open up, but the was no growth at all.
I asked the IC - should i do something else? maybe open it up more? 19.2.5 -> 3

The seed was dead from the beginning I think.

Line 2 I think says - persevere, don't give up easily.
Wilhelm: "When a man has the inner strength and consistency that need no admonition, good fortune will ensue. Nor need the future cause any concern."

I did some googling and found some helpful articles and photos (line 5 employ assistants).

I placed another mango seed in the small plate with water, above the heater, but the IC said: 29 unchanging.

But I will keep trying no matter what! :lalala:

You could try leaving it a lot longer! Even the tiny lentils I'm sprouting to supplement the salad take a few days to germinate. For a tree seed, I'd wait a month or more for signs of life, unless it was really obviously decaying. (And this fits nicely with Hexagram 19, too.)

Yesterday I put another seed in the plate, Yi said: 38.1 -> 64.
You can loose the seed in the end, be careful.
Or you almost got it, but try another one.

Today it already opened up! And i think there is a pink dot on the white-root thingy/bulge.

Here is today's photo of the seeds, 'A' started on 25th dec and 'C' on 26th

Both seeds look pretty awful, all the black stuff covering both the inside and outside 'B', but
'A' is doing pretty well, the root has obviously developed and only in 5 days, and the seed has opened up after only one day. "the young fox is breaking through its icy restraints", yes it is!

It looks similar to the first seed that i started to grow on 12th of december, but I was just confused by the blackness, and because the root was smaller than here ('A') and it took 2 weeks to get to that stage. So i just presumed it was dead, because last year, my two avocado seeds sprouted within 3 weeks without any water and heating.
Yi was telling me 19.2 -> 24, If you don't listen to advice others give you (line 2, Communal approach) you will have to start from the beginning (get another seed).

I believe that seed 'a' is growing so fast now, because I've placed the plate on a central heating radiator, and covered it with plastic lid for humidity, following experts advice.

Seed 'C' is going nowhere, it didn't open up, and the root doesn't grow. Hex 29, Yi was right, as always )

So, Hilary!

You were right,
and I was wrong,
and now it's time for me to wear a thong

Happy New Year everybody!

The roots on both seeds became black :( I've thrown out seed 'c', but I scraped off the blackness from 'a' and put it vertically into a small cup half-filled with water.

I don't know what had happened to sooo's post, here it is:
Suspended half in water, half in sunshine - not necessary heat, is how I read it and how I've grown avocado trees. I suspend them in a glass, using three or four round toothpicks poked around the middle, then placed in a glass, like so:

Image: http://lancaster.unl.edu/hort/images/AvocadoSeedx210.jpg
I will try this method now.
"Growing mango tree, take #4 and #5"

I got another two seeds, one looks good (#4), the other one almost dead (#5).

#4 is already open, waiting for the shoot to come out.

Will seed #4 sprout? Answer: 15 (Modesty).
Wilhelm: MODESTY creates success.
The superior man carries things through.

It is the law of heaven to make fullness empty and to make full what is modest;

Thus the superior man reduces that which is too much, and augments that which is too little.
He weighs things and makes them equal.

I think that looks good, holding the seed in the middle (line 3), with a right amount of water.

I think the roots went black because there was not enough water, maybe they really need to be protected from the bacteria, by being submerged.
So it appears that 38.1 -> 64 (for seed 'a') did come true, as Crowley writes:
1. Lost steeds return; bad men may yet take thy way;
And h64:
Work ruined! Ah so nearly crossed the stream! Step slackly once, and all is lost!
:brickwall: :weep:

About seed #5 Yi said: 14.1.2.4 -> 52 (Keeping still)
Crowley:
1. Steer clear of wrong, envision clear thy road.
2. Lo! The great wagon with its golden load!
4. But guard resources as his jewel a toad.

Wrong seed, you can try, but don't waste too much time.
52 Keep still, keep away from it.

I put both seeds into a small cup, in a vertical position, closed with a lid, heated by central heating radiator.

I wanted to wait a little longer, but ok, here they are:

January, 6

January, 14

Seed #5 started to decay, and the mold has appeared on it's surface. January, 20.

January, 23.

January, 27.

January, 29. I decided to plant the seed in the pot, because it has stopped growing :(

I hope it will proceed to grow.

So hex 15 turned out to be correct, seed #4 did sprout, but I didn't get quite what I wanted.
Folks on the internet say that you should plant it only when it has grown and there are 2 small green leafs.

And 52 also was right, keep still, it's dead (#5).

Lisa, thanks for appreciating the photos :)
I prefer images to text, because they are just much more informative :)

What an amzing thread - Thankyou all.

What an amazing thread, I am really loving it. I have an Avocado tree nearly 24 inches tall. It sprouted all by itself in my compost heap. About 12 of them sprouted which I planted in the garden but the sqirrels dug them up so I planted this one in a large pot, it is still growing well but I wonder how I can stop it growing too big. Best of luck with your mango. Thankyou for your wonderful pictures Ash.:)

Look at that root! :claps: It grew pretty much in a couple of weeks.

I love watching things grow, even though I have no luck growing things myself (I also have kitty cats, and as much as I love them, they are the sworn enemies of potted plants.)

I hope 4 enjoys its nice dirt :D. If you keep visiting, little sprout, you might become our mascot or something.

RIP, 5. :( You tried.

(As the owner of a pending hex 52 reading, I devoutly hope it doesn't ALWAYS mean "dead," lol.)

Thanks for moral support guys :hugs: But mr. mango didn't make it

February, 12. It grew up by an inch, and it's tiny branches began to spread.

February, 25. It started to wither away...

I had to throw it away, and replace it with the lychees sprout.

So hex 15 really became 'the middle': 'It will sprout, but it won't grow into a tree'.

Yes, the lychee seeds were first shown on the January 27th pic.
I've asked the Yi about the seed that I've planted recently (it already had 1 or 2 inches long root)
"Will this seed grow into a tree with branches and leaves?"

12.6(Standstill) to 45(Gathering Together)
Line 6, Wilhelm: The standstill ends. First standstill, then good fortune!
Internal hex is: 53 gradual development.

Wilhelm, h53:
On the mountain is a tree: the image of development. Thus the noble remains worthily virtuous, in order to improve the customs.

We'll wait and see :)
