Will the Seattle Seahawks win tomorrow? 31.4 to 39, or the I Ching - Book of Change - meets the NFL.

It's the second round of the NFL playoffs and we're up against the Green Bay Packers in their home town, which might give them the advantage:

The National Weather Service is predicting .... on Sunday things should be clear, if a bit chilly, with a high for the day of 25 degrees. That is nothing new for ... the Packers (13-3), who seem to run and throw with ease regardless of conditions, but it could present an issue for the Seahawks (11-5), who did not play a game this season with a kickoff temperature below 40 degrees.

But then again ....

Every week, the Seattle Seahawks tend to play 60 (or more) minutes of football that border on nonsensical. Late lead changes, turnovers, touchdowns: No team plays crazier games than Seattle. No team wins crazier games, either, and the prevailing reason is that the Seahawks have a quarterback in Russell Wilson who is capable of doing anything and everything at any time (both quotes from the NY Times).

And so, on to the reading: Here we start with

31 - Reciprocity (also called Influence)
Fulfillment
Rewarding to persist
To court the young woman is promising

So hmm. The Hawks (as probably all successful sports teams, or people in any field really), have put in their time; but under coach Pete Carroll their workings seem more like a courtship than 'training'.

Then again, thinking of persistence and courtship over the long term, the team has had a lot of injuries, and has had to bring on many new and untested players. This hasn't been such a bad thing, since many of them - including running back Travis Homer - have risen to the occasion and have carried the team to their second playoff game of the season.

And of course at the last minute they brought back former Hawks running back Marshawn 'Beast Mode' Lynch. Lynch is not really known for his long game (long yardage), but can power through in a pinch, given the chance.

So, lots of new and returing players, but maybe not yet seasoned or tested - but then again, the oracle speaks of 'courting the young (perhaps new, fresh, untested) woman' so ....?

Line 31.4 reads:
Persistence is promising
Regrets pass
If unsettled and vacillating in whether to go or come
Your alliances will conform to your thinking

So, what to make of that? What comes to mind is this: the Seahawks are tired, they have had a lot of injuries, but so far have have persisted and pushed through all that into the playoffs. So could this come down to what 'attitude' they carry into the game? Can Carroll and Wilson continue to rally the team, so they can get past their weariness and inexperience?

The related Hexagram is 39:
Impasse (also Limping)
Worthwhile west to south
Not worthwhile east to north
Rewarding to encounter a mature human being
Persistence is opportune

39's name of 'Limping' of course brings to mind all the injuries the team has had this season. But the overall message of this hexagram is not so much that the way (to winning) is closed, but that it is blocked and you have to find a way around it. One Yi author calls 39 'Overcoming what causes obstruction'.

Looking too at the movement of the upper trigrams (the three-line figures that make up the hexagrams), here we're starting with 31's Lake (joy) which changes to 39's Exposure.

So putting it altogether: can the team overcome its tiredness, injuries, and inexperience?

I think the answer is yes, the Hawks have a chance of winning if they stick to what they do best; if they can keep a positive attitude despite their tiredness and injuries; and perhaps most importantly if they can move off of their comfort zone and take some risks (and mabye not wait until the last two minutes of the game to do so - my commentary).

Best, D
