I'm asking myself if I cast 21uc now about something what I would think....? I suppose the first thought to come would be that this is something that needs to be dealt with, bitten into, the teeth do need to meet to chew.

But I recall receiving 21uc a number of times when asking about what to do about about a very slippery kind of liason with someone I needed to be a sponsor of a kind. In the respective roles of sponsor/student we needed to arrange times for when she could view me and so on to complete the student log, requirements etc etc She would readily agree to do this but was impossible to pin down to make any appointment time. Others had also found this and I think perhaps she didn't want to do it but wasn't aware of not wanting to do it enough to be able to say simply that she couldn't ! To say she couldn't do it would afterall have been perfectly acceptable

The 21uc puzzled me a bit at the time as I couldn't exactly bite through anything . Now as I write it seems clearer of course. I needed to bite through my own lack of clarity about her intentions. She would not have been deliberately deceiving me or others but those appointments she agreed to make at some future date were just never going to happen .. Eventually both I and others found another person for the role who would actually, clearly and precisely and definately, make appointments with us ! Much easier way to proceed !

So in that experience perhaps 21uc was showing me there was a lack of clarity, a deception of a kind I needed to bite through/see through in order to get anywhere.

In the archives I came accross this http://www.onlineclarity.co.uk/friends/showthread.php?13798-shamanism-and-21 a good thread linking that process of biting through with shamanism where 21 uc is also mentioned.

In terms of the pair Lise wrote

Make your road clear and visible

21 - make clear decisions to keep it clean
22 - show it, what it really is

just that small sentence on 21 makes that choice about the sponsor clear (in hindsight)

Hilary writes of this pair in her book

Biting Through forms a pair with Hexagram 22, Beauty:

'Biting Through means eating; Beauty is without colour.'

There's a time for reaching the truth, and a time for expressing it. Biting through, you take the situation into yourself, 'chew it over' and digest it; Beauty will bring out it's pure plain essence.

Wing says of 21 unchanging ;

There is an inner storm that has been raging for some time around the object of your inquiry. The lower trigram, CHEN, movement, is struggling upward, sparking brilliance in the upper trigram LI. This dramatic coming together of the two strong elemental forces creates a tremendous cacaphony and, eventually, release, just as thunder and lightning bring the release of static tensions before a storm. Without changing lines, a radical REFORM is necessary in your life. It will cause spectacular reaction but will release the tensions that hold you back from your aims.

Hmm there was no 'spectacular reaction' in my example of 21uc more of a process of seeing that what someone was saying to me they didn't actually mean. I think 21 uc may at times ask you to ask yourself "what is really here, is there something that deceives me about the nature of this.... !?"

Does anyone have differing experiences of 21uc, more dramatic perhaps like Wing describes ? If you receive 21 uc to a query what would be your first idea on how to take it as advice or description of your circumstances ?

I like how the Sorrells describe 21 and feel their words may have particular emphasis for 21 uc

They say ;

"Intention without reservation is needed to overcome obstacles in your path."
There are times to cut to the chase....this is one of them. Intention cuts through reservation.

Never mind what it looks like, what is it actually ?

Um... 21... only one 21 unchanging in my journal, and not a very useful one. Back in 2007 I asked for a guiding principle in choosing a web designer, and had 21 unchanging. On the basis of that, I wrote an email full of questions about terms & conditions, pricing, interaction, how long it would take, and so on, and sent it to the two designers I was considering. I wound up hiring the one who had a written agreement he always used that answered all my questions and then some. Very clear and professional.

Unfortunately, in practice, he didn't keep to his side of the agreement at all; he was too busy remodelling his kitchen and/or doing other, higher-paying work. He overran on deadlines by months, and didn't exactly deliver what I'd paid for, either. I had to spend a lot of time and some money afterwards getting things fixed for cross-browser compatibility, which was something promised in the first line of that lovely professional agreement.

He may be a bit like Trojan's student - not deliberately deceitful, just a bit clueless and easily distracted, not really committed, deceiving himself more than anyone about what he was really willing to do.

Could I have looked at the 21 unchanging and managed to do better? (Don't know what designer #2 would have been like, of course, might've been worse...) What else could I have done to 'bite through' to his real nature before I started sending him money? Hm - maybe noticed how slow he was to reply to emails even then...?

I just got 21 uc asking what is correct position to take towards a colleague. Funny as I was helping him clarify his thoughts about a work project and kept coming time and again against one or two instances where he clearly was unwilling to not self-deceive and throughout our meeting his focus kept dipping in and out. Afterwards, I felt he was somewhat displeased with me because I wasn't unreservedly praising him - I had just been honest, thinking that was the best way to help.

This bit from Hilary I think nails it:
He may be a bit like Trojan's student - not deliberately deceitful, just a bit clueless and easily distracted, not really committed, deceiving himself more than anyone about what he was really willing to do.
Our relationship has always been strained, however I've found it much easier since I've made a conscious decision to not allow myself to entertain or be pushed into entertaining anything other than platonic relationship. Not really sure how he felt/feels about it all, specially as I made a passing joke recently which seems to had hit a nerve I hadn't expected to exist, as it were.
So anyway, I've had a lot of 56 about this situation and him but when I asked what specifically should My attitude be towards him, I got 21.
Making a clean break seems like the advice?

I see the patterns you're seeing, but it's hard to see 21 as 'make a clean break' when one of its glosses is 'uniting'. Mind you... if the advice is to be absolutely direct and clear, take the bull by the horns, not beat round any bushes, not leave fuzzy areas of fluffy hopes/ assumptions... then maybe the result will be a clean break anyway.

It's about getting to the truth, whatever that is. The truth may mean parting or it may mean getting together or staying together. Not always clean break, just clean truth. It might be about just not deceiving yourself.....I don't know

good point about the 'uniting' aspect of 21, Hilary. I think the core meaning is probably closer to 'making things clear cut' which I've extrapolated into 'making a clean break' in this situation.

Trojan, I think that's probably the core point - the truth, and one's own at that. I think it's probably very tempting when we get 21 in relation to a reading involving other people to think it means cross-examining them until the real truth comes out (or is that just me?) but over time I've sort of come to see that it means more like getting rid of anything non-essential in oneself, so, very often, that means preoccupation with others, whatever it may be.

Hmmm. In "ho lo li shu", my daily hexagram this week is 21. Today is day 2, and I have serious doubts about posting this now instead of waiting. But I'm curious to see how my perspective changes, say thursday with line 4.

Thunder under Fire.
Action before Understanding.

In line 1 we have the clap of thunder, if you will, the initial boom arousing one into action. There is a sense of the Illumination and understanding of Fire in the future, and one is drawn to act now, jumping to conclusions. However if one is able to stay balanced, cultivating the arousing force of thunder, it may be put into action after understanding arrives.

Yesterday at around noon I felt a surge of energy and drove into town, wandered around and ultimately meditated before my tai chi class, able to excersize restraint without commiting my energy to anything new. At the same time I distinctly noticed external elements were deliberately intersecting my path.

In line 2 the situation has slightly matured and one has more perspective, but it is a weak line and without firm correction one is easily aroused into passing judgement on all manner of things. Today I felt a draw towards researching a few things, like this hexagram. I also realized one of my posts here had too much ego and was a bit derailing, so I corrected it. The arousing energies of thunder are clearly activating me, and I feel a confidence in my actions, but a sense of foreboding too - I'm doing my best to take care to avoid any commitment of action before illumination arrives. Cleary calls this "investigating principle without penetrating it."

This evening some work emails came in. Essentially a website client is going to lose their web-hosting in 1-2 days, and we likely need to migrate it to our web-hosting tomorrow, but this project has no budget or planning.

Which brings us to line 3, top of thunder. From what I read, one's perspective has advanced even further, and one may feel compelled to act confidently on what seems to be right, but isn't. "Biting" now will reveal the poison. In the end "shame but no blame." The "investigative principle, gradually penetrating."

And at last with line 4, illumination begins to penetrate the issue. One is able to apply the action through hard work and get to the heart of the matter, bite to the bone, reveal all subtleties.

In line 5, "seeking further clarification on what is already clear, one can make sure there is no doubt, and then seriously put it into practice." In line 4 one has the strength to cut to the heart of the matter, but in line 5 one has the receptivity to really hear the issue speak, which combined with the preceding lines, each adding a phase of perspective, allows one all that is necessary to resolve the issue.

Line 6 is tricky. I had to read 9 translations to get a proper sense of it, which may still be off. Here we have a strong line in a retiring position. One has been through much action and hard work to gain an understanding of the truth and now the time to fully digest this truth has passed. One must be ready to let the situation go now, either fully digested or only partially digested. The strong line here indicates an opinionated attachment to the situation, understandably given the effort expended to achieve clarity, but now the conditions have reverted to their opposites and one must let go or be torn away by force. Either work hard to resolve the situation correctly and thus watch it leave with satisfaction or accept that it was not meant to be digested and let it go with as little pain as possible.

For an unchanging reading this indicates a delicate situation requiring precise action and understanding to avoid indigestion. One needs to restrain committed action at first, instead acting to uncover more information, from multiple perspectives. The desire to act will grow with each new perspective, yet does one fully know the truth? Do not commit action or judgement until the core presents itself, then act with strenth and directness to bring complete pespective and prepare for the final stage of digestion. Here through receptiveness one may listen for the answer and commit to completing the digestion. The stages are precise, and at the end the conditions revert to their opposites. At the end of digesting food, one must let it go, smoothly and fully digested, or suffer indigestion. What goes in must come out one way or the other, so don't hold onto it.

And so completes my day of investigating principle, without penetration. Right now this answer feels really good and I worked hard for it. But this is just line two.

5 examples

My 21 moving combos are far less demanding and provide more clues. Less "gnawing on s.t." and more "cracking"

  • A court-case forced upon him and more was lost because of a betrayal by his beloved sister. Z. was shocked and shattered, couldnt believe this was the end of the story. Hoping for some excusing reason or outer events or twist of fate - life always goes on - he asked: How will the situation develop? 21.0 Nothing developed, no justice, utter defeat. He was forced to realize the full dimension of what he euphemistically called her 'human imperfections' and went through a difficult process of mourning and letting go.

  • Shall he claim inheritance and take his (by then grown up) step children to court ? 21.0 He did and lost the case. It wasnt for the money: What he (gay) really wanted was, that his departed partner's children would finally accept him and show some respect by recognising his position as a 'widower' (no marriage possible in these years then). His inlaws didnt, the children didnt and the law did'nt. He finally realised the underlying, true source of his longing for 'justice' and didnt take the case to the next level.

  • Half ready to end a relationship for "justified" and "good reasons" and half in love with s.o. else: how will the relationship develop? 21.0 The new fancy turned out to be a fatamorgana while the old love reached a new level where all these reasonings of the ego became irrelevant.

  • I got the chance to work on my 'dream' project yet it was one of those projects where everything moves in the wrong direction and all involved seemed to talk in a diferent language. What blocks and how to remove the blockage? 21.0 The hole thing was doomed from the start, most involved had their personal reasons to make use of my part of the input but weren't interested in the project as such. Only when I realised their abusive behaivior I gained the strenght to call the whole thing off.

  • X beeing the right hand of Mr Y, who was about to leave. Lots of rumors about possible successors. X knew it wouldnt be him and thought to himself, that any of the succesor in question would be likely to bite the old leader's 'offsprings' to death - like lions do in nature. Will he lose his job? 21.0 He didnt try to insist on what would be fair or just, but was far sighted enough to leave the company before Mr Y retired and founded his own company which became successfull over the next couple of years.

21.0 is very 39ish: the action I'm heading for is useless and all I can crack are my teeth. It is the exact opposite of an admission to go on a punishing/correcting expedition or conquer the obstacle or wrongdoer. There is much time and work ahead to understand my own role in the play (yes, usually selfdeception) Which can be followed by even more work on digesting the story and putting things straight within myself.

Grasping this truth definitely requires transcending /the ordinary/ one's present/ view - until then the core hex will play its part followed by the inherent 40 turnaround movement when biting on it, reuniting personal judgement with reality and so releasing life into its normal path. Ime the reunion happens not necessarily between people, but also between principles or forces.

21.0 is very "injust": it demands higher standards and deeper levels of understanding from the querent than from the others involved. Only then the issue can be settled. I can feel so lonely.

From my limited experience going to court is possibly too early: the underlying spiritual or psychological truth has not been found and/or accepted yet to act efficiently.

I just linked to this thread, and thought the example I put there might as well be repeated here (it's a pretty silly one):

With all good intentions, but forgetting how cats are, I rearranged the blankets in my cat's bed. He was not happy about this. So I tried to put the blankets back the way they'd been, asked Yi how close I came to doing so, and got 21uc.

My notes say that a few minutes later he was sleeping in his bed, along with the words "righting a wrong." I don't know where I got that phrase - probably somewhere here on the forum, but I didn't include a URL so I don't know who to credit.

I saw it, it tickled me a great deal...and I was surprised the cat did not press charges because many cats are not so inclined to 'forgive and forget' !

I mean you rearranged his blankets ! What were you thinking ! :duh:

I don't know! It was one of those times when it's probably a good thing cats can't speak English  (or have access to courts and lawyers, for that matter). The hours he'd probably spent kneading his blankets into perfection, and then POOF.

I got 21UC asking about the goal of a person who suddenly and unceremoniously had deprived me of an opportunity to get necessary information and assistance from him.

I grasped the message at once: his goal was to starve me to surrender, this step was an ultimate measure to bend me and to receive what he wanted from me.

Hi guys!
Love this thread. Just adding up my experience that might be useful. It always involved situations when you cannot see some X factor.
So it can be saying: You will learn when it might be too late!

Fallada, you have absolutely nailed it.
It always seems now that situation is doomed in some way from the beginning, and the reason
for such doom is usually the difference between your, querent, expectations
and larger reality taking place.
Injustice of this hexagram is often the case because
either circumstances or moral qualities of persons in question
differ from your own. So the result will be always unjust.
And hexagram 21 warns you, who throws the coins,
that you will likely suffer in this.

I just got 21 unchanging in a situation that contains aspects of what everyone's been talking about.

K is the primary contact person for a close mutual friend J who's in the hospital some distance away. K strongly dislikes me (based on some erroneous but understandable misconceptions about me), but is currently the only source for information about J.

I asked about requesting that K include me on the news updates she's sending to family and friends. My answer was 21 unchanging. To me, that suggested that yes, I should ask, but (at least at first) things might not go my way, and we'd probably have to sort out the misconceptions I mentioned above.

So I did. I'll try to update when I know a little more.

Just to update: K didn't respond, but it didn't matter; I was able to get information anyway, and J is doing much better than we expected. :)

I received 21 unchanging in regards to a coworker. He is a thief, bully, ignoramus, womanizer, alcoholic, grade-A fast talker, vindictive (not unrumpian) ... I could go on and on. Over a year other people had reported his behaviour to management, but nothing much was done about it.
(we suspect he has a relative in an executive position, though it is not confirmed)

He created a conflict with one of his subordinates that caused the subordinate (a very fine human being with twenty years employment) to walk off the job. I was very angry about this.

Since management wasn't really addressing the problem, I was reluctant to go to them. So, I asked what was best for me to do... got 21 unchanging. 'let justice be executed'
So, I marched into the managers office and unloaded everything I knew about the man, I was passionate and did not hold back. Most people know me as quiet and reserved, so they were quite shocked at my volume and intensity. The next day upper management came and hauled him into a meeting. He came out looking very shocked and has since partially altered his actions. Management asked the subordinate to come back to work, he did.
I'll post a follow up at a future date when the man has been reformed or fired. (I'm going to insure one of the two things happens)

My experiences with 21 UC (and 21 in general) are exactly the same. I believed I had clarity. I thought I understood the situation, turns out YI was telling me to go rework the problem. Sort of like in math. My assumptions are leading to incorrect conclusions, but I had the skills and available knowledge just needed to ‘chew’ through and rework it in order to find a solution. I like to think of this answer as Yi telling me, work harder, you’ll get there.
