For help with this reading you need to post your query in the Shared Readings section of the forum. These threads are for people to share what they feel their casts meant in hindsight

Just to update on 29 and my experiences this Christmas
All was well - even though the reading was 29 (twice). A hiccup just now - people leaving, feeling upset and emotional - a return to a situation that might have been unpleasant.

I asked, why did this happen = and got 29 UC again. In retrospect, I think it means keep an emotional distance, you are in the chasm, accept it and damage limitation perhaps

Thanks to Trojina for directing me to this thread!

I asked Yi yesterday what the lesson is for this week and received 29 (Danger) UC. I've been receiving a lot of unchanging castings lately and have not quite realized (within) the difference, though it appears there is something different about them. I've been contemplating this hex both as it applies to my life right now as well as in general. I think I may already be in the abyss of these chasms with nothing to hold onto and that my focus ought to be on internal things. Anyway, this morning I opened up my book of Rumi poems, and the very first poem seemed so hex 29 to me. What do you think? I'm bolding the lines that stood out to me. (Also, please let me know if this post is in the wrong place).

Cry Out in Your Weakness – Rumi

A dragon was pulling a bear into its terrible mouth.

A courageous man went and rescued the bear.
There are such helpers in the world, who rush to save
anyone who cries out. Like Mercy itself,
they run toward the screaming.

And they can’t be bought off.
If you were to ask one of those, “Why did you come
so quickly?” He or she would say, “Because I heard
your helplessness.”

Where lowland is,
that’s where water goes. All medicine wants
is pain to cure.

And don’t just ask for one mercy.
Let them flood in. Let the sky open under your feet.

Take the cotton out of your ears, the cotton
of consolations, so you can hear the sphere-music. . . .

Give your weakness
to One Who Helps.

Crying out loud and weeping are great resources.
A nursing mother, all she does
is wait to hear her child.

Just a little beginning-whimper,
and she’s there.

God created the child, that is, your wanting,
so that it might cry out, so that milk might come.

Cry out! Don’t be stolid and silent
with your pain. Lament! And let the milk
of Loving flow into you.

The hard rain and wind
are ways the cloud has
to take care of us.

Be patient.
Respond to every call
that excites your spirit.

Ignore those that make you fearful
and sad, that degrade you
back toward disease and death.

Not just beautiful but one that needs reading over and over because it turns things upside down as in weakness itself is something to give.

Just about to post a little quote and reread the beautiful Rumi poem above making this little quote seem a bit tiddly and yet time and time again it has seemed the advice of 29

'Life is a rollercoaster
Just gotta ride it'

from Ronan Keating song

...and yes when you're on a roller coaster you can do nothing but stay in the moment and live the moment. You don't know what's going to happen next, you can't know so you have to ride it like the song says.

This reminds me of a birthday party I had a couple of years ago. I was undecided whether to celebrate it on the Saturday when more people could come or on the exact day of my birthday during the week. I got 29 un for the latter and opted for this one also because Saturday was far away and what if it rained?

Well 29 unchanging proved to be a hectic and crazy day, doing everything at the last second, shopping in two different places, making cakes, taking everything to the park, got there quite late, but people were waiting for me in total placid contentment, as if I was the Mad Queen they had been waiting for.

I was exhausted but thrilled, was wearing a long old fashioned white skirt and a funny jacket that made me look like Alice in Wonderland. I took my boots off and started running in circle around the people that were sitting on the grass and had started singing HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO meee... I was so tired, I laughed when running round, then collapsed on the grass.

Hilary s comment: 29 unchanging - that s quite an unusual casting for a birthday party!

I live on a canal boat and have recently moved to a new mooring which has not been without incident - yesterday my cat fell in the canal and this morning woke up to find some holiday hireboaters had partially drained the canal by leaving the locks open, meaning all our boats were literally keeling over at 45 degrees. Anyway, I had to go into London which is an hour’s train ride away, leaving my cat for the first time since coming to the new place. As I was on the train home tonight, at about 9pm, I asked yi if my car was ok. 29uc. Eek! What had happened? I asked again if he’d be safe and sound when I got back. 21.4>27. This was the same cast I’d got for asking if I’d be safe walking down the pitch dark towpath at night.

Well, after a very dark and stumbly walk down the unlit towpath (and narrowly avoiding being mauled by a neighbour’s dogs who obviously thought I was an intruder) I got back to find the cat curled up asleep and with no obvious signs of recent angst. But who knows what went on when I was away...

EDIT: I’ve already edited this post to change CAR to CAT. There’s still a rogue spelling that was introduced by autocorrect, I’m just leaving it there... but for the record, I’m talking about my CAT not CAR... !!!

This may be TMI for many but I found it to be such an interesting image of 29.

My cycle was late so I asked the oracle when it will arrive - 29uc. I fell asleep soon after and dreamt I was on a white water rafting amusement park ride with my friends. I began to slip off into the water and was holding my top half on the raft with my lower half submerged trying not to fall off. There was no panic even though I was scraping my feet on the ground as the raft went through the rapids. At the end of the ride my cycle arrived. When I woke up for real, there it was.

White water rafting seems such a great picture of 29. You aren't completely out of control even though there is danger. An ore can harness the water and even make the experience thrilling rather than plain scary. Even if you lose your ore, you can still hold on. The only way out is through. There are moments of calm and different categories of rapids. But also the monthly cycle comes with physical and emotional PMS symptoms that come in waves that also must be navigated.

You won't believe I first read this as about the arrival of a bicycle, you know with wheels.

Yes after reading this

My cycle was late so I asked the oracle when it will arrive - 29uc.

At the end of the ride my cycle arrived.

I actually envisioned a bicycle arriving by itself and I was puzzled as to how a bicycle could arrive without a rider

I got it quite quickly after that - thankfully. I don't know how I could have seen it that way.

Great example though, interesting in the dream your lower body was beneath the water.

Receiving hexagram29 scares me to some degree: it's called "Repeating Chasms", "Too Deep", "Danger".
Still it doesn't necessarily indicate a scary situation: I've often received this hexagram while asking about emotional matters. To me it means "lots of emotions" (water is a symbol for feelings), and yes, there is no solid place in emotions to grasp. They are fluid. You can't avoid or ignore them, instead should learn to swim & surf. There is always the risk of over-involvement, heartbreak, stress, misjudgement, etc.

The hexagram talks about danger; but also sincerity & clarity:
"The Abysmal repeated. If you are sincere, you have success in your heart, and whatever you do succeeds." [Wilhelm/Beynes]
Hilary says:
"In these times, certainty comes of an inner connection, by holding to your own heart (or from a ‘connected heart’). And it comes of being in movement: undertaking committed action without knowing; being present without trying to make it safe first. (You can’t.)"
And also:
"The Image – always a source of counsel – develops the idea of repetition as ‘learning opportunity"

That said, it's one of the hardest things for me to do: to progress where nothing is sure, and specially, to keep my faith in such a situation. Seems like I'm too conservative as I find it hard to practice the judgements of hexagrams 10 & 29. And when you seek assurance about vague emotional matters, receiving hexagram 29 doesn't satisfy you; although it mirrors the very nature of emotions.

29 is about I think, successful practices when repeatedly exposed to danger.

Lise:
Gua Poem:
Repeated pit. If one has truth and a considerate heart, expansion. Moving brings reward.

The great image says: flowing waters reach the goal: Repeated Pit. The noble one moves according to principles and virtue, he uses repeating to teach practice.

An analog might be say, practicing martial arts or boxing.
Or in the case of a public health crisis, perhaps one might have to be diligent/sincere - considerate of others - in one's practices (handwashing, don't touch your face, etc.) because one will be repeatedly exposed to danger.
But if you are aware of what to do (truth, methods) and diligent (considerate, sincere) in your practices, you will get past it (move forward.)

blessing the boats

Lucille Clifton - 1936-2010

may the tide
that is entering even now
the lip of our understanding
carry you out
beyond the face of fear
may you kiss
the wind then turn from it
certain that it will
love your back
may you
open your eyes to
water
water
waving forever
and may you in your innocence
sail through this
to that

Writing a text about some memories of mine, I asked the Yi - how about giving this the title "Rivers"? And got: 29 unchanged. The image of Kan, isn't it that of a moving stream or river?
