I don’t know if we can keep three threads on this subject of Unchanging Hexagrams going at one time [see similar threads for Hexagram One and Two] but having more in play might allow others who are waiting for a particular hexagram to join us – so maybe we should try?

By the way.....There is a separate thread in Exploring Divination for general ideas on unchanging castings entitled "Your Experiences with Unchanging Castings Hexagram 0, so please enter anything that isn't specific to a particular unchanged hexagram over there.

Anyway, on to Hexagram Three Unchanging. Although I don’t have a personal story in all cases, I do have one for this casting, so here we go.....

I was just out of university and had been married a year or so, had been working with the Yi Ching a bit but not all that familiar yet. Finding that I was feeling sick all the time, dizzy, exhausted, swollen, I consulted a doctor who found no immediate cause and ordered a battery of tests. I was a bit frightened and consulted the Yi in desperation, casting: Hexagram Three Unchanging. Oh my GOD, something growing – and I thought immediately of tumors. Meanwhile the doctor said if the tests were inconclusive then exploratory surgery might be an option when the Christmas holiday concluded the following week. I panicked.

Drove with my husband to my parents’ place at the New Jersey beach for Christmas Day, crossing a four-lane bridge out of Philadelphia, wedged in traffic and barrelling along at 70 miles per hour, I was overcome with nausea. He whipped the car into a delicatessen on the other side of the bridge and I jumped out and threw up behind a hedge, then glanced up at the neon sign advertising “Hoagies!” Ever been to Philadelphia? These are Italian lunchmeat sandwiches and best on earth. My hubby bought two. He ate one. I ate half of one, threw it up, ate the other half and went to sleep.

At the beach the salt air perked me up a bit. We went inside where the turkey was cooking and I ran for the bathroom to be sick again, then slept for all of Christmas Day and got up in time for dessert when I downed two huge pieces of minced meat pie with a barrel of coffee. Said my concerned Mother – What are they testing you for? I told her tumors. She said, well that’s interesting because I’d bet this house that you are pregnant.

AH! Hexagram Three Unchanging. ;)

The story gave me chills (good ones).
It was a waste of a good philly cheese steak tho!

I don't have any 3UC readings to share, so I will just sit back and enjoy the rest :bows: :)

Wow arabella!
What a beautiful answer regarding a pregnancy! I had various thoughts reading your post and i'll try to share some of them, although i cannot remember of a specific 3 unchanging experience right now.

Ever since i was around 16 and up until now, there are periods in my life, when i have repeated, persistent, and vivid dreams of being pregnant. Pregnancy dreams always come at times of change. Usually i connect them to growing up and preparing to move to the next stage, practically, emotionally or spiritually. Some of those dreams are nice and peaceful, but most of them are filled with fear and anxiety over the changes. The new is the unknown and the unknown is often scary, although it might be timely, necessary or welcome, all at the same time. This is a very 3 unchanging feeling IMO! The new is here it is time for it to grow. Transitional periods are always chaotic but the seed for the next stage is already in there.

Although i don't rember of any particular story, i do remember getting 3 unchanging to seemingly simple, everyday questions. I sat there looking at it looking back at me and i couldn't make the slightest sense out of it. "Difficulty at the beggining". What beggining? I don't see anything new here! Everything seemed to be the same as it was the day before...But then, time would pass and things would start changing and looking back i would realize that they had been evolving longer than i imagined and indeed the seed was in there somewhere but i couldn't have noticed because at first the change is taking place under the surface of things..

Now that i think of it, i believe that sometimes 3 unchanging might be a friendly warning, a hint to let one know that something is starting to change, although in such a microcosmic scale, that it is impossible to be observed with a naked eye. If there is an advice in there, that would probably be to be alert and help it grow when you do notice it!

LOVE your stories!! All of them.

This morning I cast for today. Something has to start and I cannot make it start. It is very much like a writers block. I got 41 to 3, but reading the stories about 3, I realized that the relating hexagram is very much like an unchanging hex. I see it as the "sea", like Hilary describes it, an image of the situation, of the question, the problem, the time. The relating hex has no changing lines.

There should be one thread for all "general" remarks about unchanging. They get scattered over the threads now. Maybe use the thread about hex.1 for it? Or make one especially for that?

"Your Experiences With Unchanging Castings -- Hexagram 0"...

And maybe a name with the number will make later searches easier: 3 instead of three?

I realized that the relating hexagram is very much like an unchanging hex.

I have experienced this too, also I read an old thread where trojan mentioned using the image of the relating hex as a focal point, or it being more important, and I find this with uc hexes as well, the image is really important.

I've only once tried to read an uc hex by reading all the lines, and it didn't resonate with me. I think Bradofrd once wrote the lines are how you are responding to the energy of the hex at that time, and that is clear to me, so with an uc hex I tend to think of it as you are standing on the highway of this energy, where as if you have changing lines you might be about to merge onto the highway via the road and the line suggest what kind of road or vehicle you are driving.

I actually have had 3 uc once, and it was for a new project I just started and I had many grand visions for but because I was new at it I didn't really know what I was suppose to do most of the time. But I did keep going. It became bigger than I thought it would. Its almost as if it was just about setting things up well, or very well and that is the predictor of how the 'thing' can expand, the basis, its not a direction but a time to build foundations.

I have just one unchanging 3 in my journal, and yes, that fits it really well. Creating a new pattern, something I was brand new to, establishing it, and getting some help for that. Also the way you describe it really conveys the way 3 is just 4 looked at from a different perspective.

Forgot to say... Arabella, that's a perfect 3! And maybe a nice example of 'unchanging' being '!'. Or maybe '...' :) .

I've 2 clear 3 unchanging memories...both similar questions , different times

Both times found myself unaccountably depressed, dark, weepy, wishing to withdraw....appearing out of nowhere, suddenly. Both times I just asked "whats happening to me" and got 3 unchanging....which I found very helpful becasue it was actually quite scary

Helpful because really the label 'depressed' wasn't really what was going on with me....'depressed' was just a label I borrowed, a word we have in our language for perhaps how that behaviour looks from outside and I was labelling myself from the outside. The 3 unchanging made me see it differently.....the chaos of birthing. It felt very messy and unformed, but there was alot going on inside me....it wasn't inert depression....it was living....all kinds of impressions, visions, a whole torrent of stuff seemed to be coming through to me and the only way to allow that to happen properly was to withdraw.

In other matters too I experience 3 unchanging as chaos...infact I personally call it chaos or at least what looks like chaos. All new things look like chaos at first....no patterns of growth yet or can't see patterns.

I have never seen 3 as time of actual birth...I think it waaaay before that...the primaevil soup and all that...and I don't think it pretty either, I think its a pretty disorientating time where one might feel very fragmented.....but knowing one is birthing in some sense makes it a whole lot easier to bear, knowing something is being born makes a time such as I described above less of an illness, more of a natural and necessary process. In terms of pregnancy I'd say early pregancy still with the slosh of water all about, cells dividing ect...well you know what I mean

Yes, pregnancy that is so early on, you don't know it exists -- just feeling disgusting, craving who-knows-what and you don't know why, finding what you thought would help makes you feel even worse, thinking you may be about to fly apart, exhausted, worried, and things spewing in all directions. It's like losing your own definition and finding a new one seems to be being created without your participation.

Thankfully and Hopefully however the definition of what any of these hexagrams unchanging 'means' will prove to be competely elusive.

Theres a fitting comment for hex 3

I don't think we're compiling a definition, but an experience, individual histories of these hexagrams in their unchanging form in one place that is simple to access. That should be a valuable resource, but isn't intended to replace what has to be a personal connection to the Yi that builds over time, and the sense of resonance when you feel you've been spoken to directly by a casting.

Right... cell soup. I've thought of 3 as the security, energy and pure potential of the newborn, but 'newly conceived' is even better. Nothing determined at all, and really, really 'don't use this to have a direction to go'.

I also find English vocabulary stupidly inadequate for talking/thinking about emotional states. And of course if you don't have words to describe the thing, it's that much harder to know what the hell is going on. Again, good to have an oracle with a better vocabulary.

Well, I'm in a 3 UC state now - got that Hx mid Jan, and again a few days ago - i guess I'll just have to see how it goes over the next few months and let you know. Things related to that situation feel very "unknowing", uncertain, right now - theres a glimmer, feels like a slow unrusting of strongly rusted stuff.

Well, no, I'll re-think what I just wrote. The old situation has rusted solid, this one's a new direction. IF it takes off and solidifies, it will be life-changing for me. Right now, everything just feels miserable.

Thinking of this time as the very beginning of pregnancy really helps - not knowing at this time whether the fetus will incorporate correctly, I get the strong sense that I need to be very cautious, but not completely reticent, and somehow not do anything, but at the same time be open enough to let things develop. See? I dont even know what I'm talking about.....

Brad - "Stealing order from chaos, one small step at a time". So, when there are setbacks, I should let them be setbacks, when things look like they are progressing, I should help them along. Nigel Richmond says about this time, that to get it to move forward is going to require not giving up, if you do, it could all fail.
Sigh!

I got some 3's in readings past time, but right now I got the thing born. Very very new-born, tiny, vulnerable, but definitely born. No 3 anymore. Plenty of 22 though, which I see as life-energy.
But I have been in the chaos/depression/despair and loss of motivation soup.
Wish you a wonderful baby!

Yeah, somewhere inside me there's that tiny feeling of hope, a light thats slowly getting brighter. Perhaps 3 UC, not only describing the chaos on the outside, but also making one slowly aware of the growing within, filling one from the inside.

I just received an invitation with this quote on

"Each of us seeks to discover a meaning to our life that is wholly and uniquely our own. Nothing else is attractive: nothing else has the power to cohere an entire lifetime of activiity. We become like ancient Gaia, boldly embracing the void, knowing that out of Chaos' darks depths we have the strength to give birth to order. "

yes its always formless... and its not a time of intention IMO though it may be a time of orientation

the being that is the baby is not deciding how it will grow...its kind of at the mercy of the forces of growth

When you think of it the beginnings of life on earth must have been Hex 3 unchanging: the primordial soup, mucky, murky, slow moving, casting off a bit of an unpleasant odour, a bit of a "brew." And then the spark, the bit of light that begins to devour and transform the mire ever so slowly. Rather difficult for a human being to sit through the stages of such an unpromising looking change, fairly hopeless and holding their nose, trying to outwait a process that in some cases literally takes eons.

I think that Hexagram 3 unchanging might also be cast as the birth of Faith. Faith in yourself and in the process.

What, still no Nobel prize?

Another 3 unchanging just today. I moved the files for our new free reading from the test directory to the live one and cast one last test reading to check everything still worked. An unchanging reading makes a lot of sense to me here: the script waiting for real people to use it.

I found an unchanging 3. About a year ago I heard of a very promising business which was kind of soaring up in the market. I asked Yi if I should invest in it. I never do anything like that, and I didn't really think I'd do it now. Just curious. Should I..? 14 to 64. Should I not..? 3 unchanging. Mayby I should have done it, except that it is not me. So I didn't, and maybe 14.1 did tell me not to. And maybe 14.3 told me that it would be below my standards. Hm, I think both lines did.

Not quite sure what 3 told me... I did start a new life in the months since then. New motivation, new direction, new possiblities, big bunch of troubles and insecurity. Or rather the other way around: 6 months of trouble and 1 month of a new beginning. So that makes sense.

Ha, writing it down did make it come alive :D So I was right!!

Not back then. I didn't really understand, but I followed my own decision not to invest. Which is what I had from the start, I was just curious if Yi would tell me I'd make my fortune. Or not.

Now, in hindsight, I can see that it was a very accurate description of the situation. There was this possibility for a new start - but not if I would not be true to my own life. I needed (need) everything I could summon in myself to actually make this start. It could have ended in "growing old" as comfortably as possible (but not very happy), instead of working my ** off for something I want to become reality.

This morning I got another 3 unchanging, for this day. Same feeling as last year, but a lot smaller. One-day size instead of life-size. When I got up, I felt a bit desperate, as if I would not have the strength to push through. Every day is different, I fall from mountain-high enthusiasm into deep despair and back again. Asking Yi for advice often gives me that little thing, which changes going-down back into going-up. And today 3 was exactly what I needed.

Now I know why I feel like this. Being thrown around in the chaos of creation.

When you know, it is not that bad anymore. Morning nausea. Or maybe even birthpains!! :D

Tigrams: Thunder below/in Water. The primeval soup and lightning entering deep into it, creating the first beginnings of organic life.
I think water (or the liquid state of things) is the medium which makes it for all things possible to find their shape. Both anorganic and organic.
Human-being-size: the tiny itch of something beginning, which affects all liquid 80% of yourself.

A tennis reading! From early last year - how would Murray do in the quarter-finals against Ferrer? 3 unchanging. Ferrer won in four sets. Murray blamed his lack of fitness; other people said he's not just that good on clay. I wondered whether 3 unchanging might be to do with having lots of emotional energy but not quite knowing where to put it. That used to describe Murray - he had a bad habit of berating himself fiercely during matches for every miss.

But then again - he did win the US )pen later the same year.
